The DSE English speaking exam is a nerve-wracking component for many students. It doesn’t just test your English proficiency, but also your critical thinking skills and ability to perform under pressure. So, how can you stand out in the group discussion? How can you capture the examiner’s attention effectively?
In our live stream this week, we specially invited English teacher Scarlett, Head of Secondary School Mr.Austin, and four outstanding Year 12 students for a comprehensive DSE English speaking exam simulation and in-depth analysis!
Part 1: Teacher Scarlett’s Comprehensive Exam Breakdown
At the beginning of the live stream, Teacher Scarlett introduced the format and procedure of the DSE English speaking exam, explaining that it is mainly divided into two parts: the preparation time and the actual exam (including Group Interaction and Individual Response).
👇
- Preparation Time (approx. 10 minutes)
Candidates receive the question and discussion points, and can use this time to formulate personal opinions and arguments. So, what exactly should you do in the preparation room?
👇
- Exam Time
Part A Group Interaction
(approx. 8 minutes)
Discussion topics are very broad, covering areas like arts & culture, technology, social issues, health, and more. Besides strong English expression, candidates need a wide knowledge base and unique insights.
Part B Individual Response
(1 minute per candidate)
After Part A concludes, examiners ask each candidate a question, to which they must respond.
Part 2: Realistic Exam Simulation
To give everyone the most direct experience, we recreated a mini-exam scenario live. Teacher Scarlett and Principal Austin acted as examiners, while the four Year 12 students participated in the simulated exam.
This highly realistic simulation allowed candidates to intuitively understand the exam rhythm, see examples of high-scoring responses, and identify common mistakes to avoid.
Live Highlights Recap:
Part 3: Scarlett & Austin Decode the Marking Criteria
Starting from the official marking guidelines, the two examiners highlighted the key points:
The DSE English speaking exam is primarily graded on four aspects:
1. Fluency and Coherence
· Focus: Ability to express ideas fluently and coherently; clarity of logic.
· High-Score Key: Avoid long pauses; use appropriate connectives to structure your speech clearly.
2. Vocabulary and Language Patterns
· Focus: Range and accuracy of vocabulary; variety of sentence structures.
· High-Score Key: Use some advanced vocabulary precisely and employ different sentence patterns flexibly to avoid monotony.
3. Communication Strategies
· Focus: Ability to participate effectively in the discussion and move the conversation forward.
· High-Score Key: Actively inviting others to speak, interrupting politely, responding to others’ points, summarizing the group’s progress, etc. This is a key differentiator for high-scoring candidates.
4. Pronunciation and Delivery
· Focus: Clarity of pronunciation; naturalness and variation in intonation.
· High-Score Key: No need to pursue perfect British or American accents, but ensure the examiner can understand you easily. Use intonation changes to convey emotion and emphasize key points.
Austin specifically emphasized: “Examiners are not looking for a ‘standard answer’; they are assessing whether you are an effective ‘communicator’. Proactive and positive interaction is far more important than reciting a flowery script.”
Part 4:Score-Boosting Tips
1. Exam Techniques & Strategies
· The Golden Opening: Accumulate useful sentence patterns to state your position clearly at the start of your individual response, demonstrating critical thinking.
· Interaction Phrases: Actively build a repertoire of phrases for agreeing, disagreeing, and guiding the discussion.
· Time Management: Be aware of the discussion’s progress. If time is running out, proactively try to take on a leader role to push for a summary.
2.Question Trends & Preparation Focus
Teacher Scarlett pointed out several clear trends in recent speaking exam questions:
· Contemporary Topics: Questions often revolve around global issues, social hot topics, technological developments, and youth life, requiring a broad knowledge base.
· Emphasis on Critical Thinking: Questions rarely have black-and-white answers. Examiners prefer to see candidates analyze issues from multiple perspectives and layers.
· Focus on Real-World Connection: Questions often require candidates to connect the discussion to personal experiences or the reality of Hong Kong society, avoiding purely theoretical talk.
Preparation Advice: Read English news and opinion pieces regularly to accumulate vocabulary and viewpoints on various topics. Develop the habit of considering both sides of an argument.
The DSE English speaking exam is a performance that can be meticulously prepared for. As long as you understand the rules, master the techniques, and practice consistently, you will definitely be able to take the stage with confidence and achieve your desired results!

第三环节:Scarlett与Austin校长解读评分标准
两位考官从官方评分准则出发,为我们划出了重点:
DSE英文口语主要从以下四个方面评分:
1. 流利度与连贯性(Fluency and Coherence)
· 考察重点:能否流畅、连贯地表达思想,逻辑是否清晰。
· 高分关键:避免长时间停顿,使用适当的连接词使发言条理分明。
2. 词汇与句式(Vocabulary and Language Patterns)
· 考察重点:词汇的丰富性与准确性,句式的多样性。
· 高分关键:精准使用一些高端词汇,并能灵活运用不同句型,避免语言单调。
3. 互动技巧(Communication Strategies)
· 考察重点:能否有效参与讨论,推动对话进行。
· 高分关键:主动邀请他人发言、礼貌地打断、回应他人观点、总结小组讨论进度等。这是区分高分考生的重要指标。
4. 发音与语调(Pronunciation and Delivery)
