Milo Imagines the World

Milo Imagines the World is a beautiful story that opens up a conversation about bias and empathy. Illustrator Christian Robinson based Milo’s story on his own life. When Robinson felt overwhelmed as a child, drawing gave him a sense of control.

The story is about Milo on a long subway ride with his older sister. To pass the time, he studies the face around him and imagines what their lives are like and draws pictures of them in his sketchbook. He assumes things about them based on the way they are dressed, drawing on cultural stereotypes and expectations.

This story tell us that we can’t really know/judge anyone just by looking at them.

The Alchemist
by Gene Luen Yang 

The Alchemist is a classic novel in which a boy named Santiago embarks on a journey seeking treasure in the Egyptian pyramids after having a recurring dream about it and on the way meets mentors, falls in love, and most importantly, learns the true importance of who he is and how to improve himself and focus on what really matters in life.

The Alchemist reinforced this desire in me to never be afraid to think big. Santiago’s journey never came without its challenges, but he never gave up. In a way, we are all like Santiago, on our own journey of self-discovery.

“Things Fall Apart” tells the story of Okonkwo, a leader in an Igbo village in Nigeria in the 1890s, as he deals with his own personal struggles as well as the impact of British colonialism. The book describes the rich culture and complexities of Igbo society, articulating an insider’s sense of the African experience.

Students can learn from these leaders, take the good and ignore the bad, It is important to make each leadership experience an opportunity to learn so as to become a better leader.

The Count of Monte Cristo

The Count of Monte Cristo is an adventure story that takes place during the historical events of 1815 to 1838. This piece tells the tale of a man who seeks revenge after his escape from prision and deals with the central themes of vengeance, justice, forgiveness, and mercy.

The moral of the story is repeated in a letter from the Count to Valentine and Morrel as follows: “Live and be happy, beloved children of my heart, and never forget that, until the day comes when God will deign to reveal the future to man, all human wisdom is contained in these words: Wait and hope!”
