As we reach the middle of March, we are excited to remind our community about the upcoming 3-way and student conferences on March 28. These conferences offer an invaluable opportunity for students, parents, and teachers to come together and discuss individual learning progress. These conversations allow us to celebrate achievements, address challenges, and collaboratively set goals for future academic success. We encourage all parents to actively participate in their child’s education, as your involvement significantly impacts their learning journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to our conferences, we are eagerly preparing for our Visual Arts Celebration, which will take place from March 25 to March 28. This event will showcase the incredible creativity and talent of our students. Parents are welcome to visit at any time during the celebration to view the inspiring artwork created by our students. It is a wonderful opportunity to appreciate their artistic expressions and foster a greater appreciation for the arts within our community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also want to take a moment to recognize our HKDSE Year 2 students who have begun their English exams. PYP<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the course of this academic year, in the Primary School we have continued to enrich our approach to mathematics. In our teaching, we are always guided by standards. Standards help us understand how a typical child develops in different areas of learning. They are helpful tools for a teacher, but all too often they are used to create series of unconnected lessons and meaningless worksheets for students to complete. This often results in very shallow understanding, lack of confidence in students and poor academic results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At UISZ, we approach teaching and mathematics as a search for conceptual understanding<\/strong>. This means that we aim for our students to acquire knowledge and develop skills in a deep and meaningful way. This allows them to use their understanding to become independent learners and problem solvers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Year 5, our students have just completed a Mathematician\u2019s Workshop unit on patterns. This is our students\u2019 first experience with formal algebra. You may remember your own first experience with algebra, where you learned to \u201csolve for x\u201d, but it was never explained to you what \u201cx\u201d meant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, we started with a visual approach<\/strong> in a realistic context. We observed and built patterns that grow predictably. We discussed how we saw the pattern change step-by-step. Through our discussions, we realized that different people visualized the growth of the same pattern in different ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We then chose some of the patterns we constructed and organized the data in a table<\/strong>. Organizing information allows us to make conjectures and test whether they are true or false. In a first stage, we developed a general rule of how the amount of blocks in a pattern (\u201cpattern number\u201d) grew from one case to the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building the table line-by-line can cause big errors.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we were building our tables, we soon figured out that building the data set row by row opened us up to catastrophic mistakes. This led us to develop a deeper generalization, built on the relationship between the case number (CN) and the amount of blocks in the case (PN). At first, we would write out these generalizations<\/strong> in full sentences, but soon we found out that in mathematical we can use an algebraic expression<\/strong> to say the same thing in a far more succinct way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The power of generalization (general rules). Do you see the connection between the visual pattern and the algebraic expression?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, we completed the circle with another form of visualization: showing a graphic representation of the pattern on a coordinate<\/strong> plane<\/strong>. Once we realized we could represent the case number with \u201cx\u201d and decide that the number of blocks could be called \u201cy\u201d, we could use a graphic calculator. We plotted the points as ordered pairs in a table. We noticed that each of the dots seem to follow a predictable path. To everyone\u2019s surprise, once we entered the algebraic expression into the calculator as well, it connected perfectly each of the plotted dots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Algebra is taught in many different ways. Yet, this approach brings together a wide array of areas of mathematics and teaches students to use powerful tools and strategies in a meaningful way. While they used these tools to explore block patterns this time, they have built a conceptual understanding of how patterns can be represented and understood in different ways. Certainly, this is a helpful skill in a world where data is omnipresent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MYP<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our MYP Design students have been engaged in hands-on, creative projects that improve their problem-solving skills and technical abilities. Every year level explored different aspects of design, applying their knowledge in meaningful, authentic and practical ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MYP 1 students wrapped up their coding unit by developing interactive games. This project allowed them to strengthen their programming skills while fostering creativity and logical thinking. By designing and testing their games, they gained a deeper understanding of coding principles and user experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This project encouraged students to research and appreciate different cultural traditions while developing their craftsmanship. The final products showcased their creativity and attention to detail, bringing elements of storytelling and artistry to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MYP 3 focused on woodworking, designing and constructing unique wooden tables. Using power tools and various woodworking techniques, they combined functionality with aesthetics to produce high-quality, custom-made furniture. This unit emphasized precision, problem-solving, and hands-on skill development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MYP 5 students are completing their ePortfolios, where they apply their design skills to create products that promote well-being. This project challenges them to think critically about user needs and sustainability while refining their ability to document and reflect on their design process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across all year levels, students have demonstrated innovation, craftsmanship, and a deep engagement with the design cycle. Their work highlights the creativity and technical skills they have developed throughout the program, preparing them for future design challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DP<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preparing for IB Exams: A Look at Our Math and Physics Students<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As our Grade 12 International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) Mathematics students gear up for their upcoming exams, they are deep into practice reviews and fine-tuning the final aspects of their course. With their Internal Assessment already submitted and awaiting evaluation by the International Baccalaureate (IB), the students are focused on consolidating their knowledge and skills in preparation for this critical assessment period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grade 11 DP Math: Building Foundations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, our Grade 11 Diploma Programme Math students have just completed their third unit out of a total of five. This week marks an important milestone as they enter evaluation week. The students have also received an introduction to the Internal Assessment, a significant component of their coursework. They are currently in the process of selecting topics for their research projects, which will allow them to explore mathematical concepts in greater depth and apply their learning to real-world scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IB Physics: Practical Applications and Upcoming Topics<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In IB Physics, we recently concluded a series of practical weeks. During these sessions, students conducted experiments to evaluate atmospheric pressure, measure temperature exchange, and calculate the energy required for fusion and evaporation. These hands-on experiences are crucial for reinforcing theoretical knowledge and developing practical skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead, our next topic will delve into the fascinating world of sound waves and light. This upcoming unit promises to be complex yet exciting, offering students the opportunity to explore the fundamental principles of wave behavior, optics, and their applications in everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As our students navigate these critical stages in their academic journey, they prepare for exams and build a strong foundation for their future studies in mathematics and physics. The dedication and hard work they are demonstrating will serve them well in the coming weeks and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HKDSE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As March arrives, the 12th-grade students preparing for the DSE have entered a tense stage of exam preparation. This week, five students went to Hong Kong to take the English speaking exam, while the remaining students will complete their speaking exams in the next two weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To prepare for the DSE exams in early April, the 12th graders are diligently reviewing and consolidating all the knowledge they have learned in class, and they are practicing their problem-solving skills and answering techniques by working on past DSE exam papers. In this intense study atmosphere, each student is putting in 100% effort to showcase their best selves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 11th graders are also preparing for next week’s midterm exams. In English, everyone is continuously building their vocabulary and internalizing new words through sentence construction. The vocabulary quizzes in each class allow students to assess their learning progress and promptly address any gaps. In addition to practicing reading, listening, and speaking, students have also learned various writing formats, such as letters of advice, proposals, reports, and speeches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The DSE students are all working hard, and we wish them excellent results in their upcoming exams!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
