Beyond the classroom, community remains at our core. The Boarding House will host a BBQ Birthday celebration next Wednesday, reinforcing our warm and connected residential environment. Finally, we look forward to capping off the week with an exciting PYP field trip to the Heyuan Dinosaur Museum on Friday; an inspiring opportunity for experiential learning.

This week in our PYP learning community, we’ve embraced the outdoors not just as a place to play, but as a dynamic, living classroom that deepens understanding, nurtures empathy, and sparks curiosity across all grade levels. We believe that time spent outside fosters not only academic growth but also emotional resilience, collaboration, and a profound respect for the world around us.

This week, our K–Grade 1 students explored two powerful concepts: relationships and measurement; both brought vividly to life through nature. Walking mindfully through our Forest School area, children observed how leaves vary in size, how sticks can be compared in length, and how shadows shift with the sun, all while practicing acts of kindness toward one another and the environment. These experiences help young learners understand that knowledge isn’t confined to desks, grows from wonder, movement, and connection.

Literacy 读写能力
In parallel, our literacy program continues to thrive as an interdisciplinary subject in our UOI. We love to emphasize that even our youngest writers are capable of crafting meaningful texts when given choice, authentic purposes, and supportive scaffolding. Across grades, students are developing voice, structure, and confidence, not through rigid templates, but through cycles of drafting, conferring, revising, and celebrating their unique stories and ideas.

Our Grade 5 students recently dove into a fascinating historical inquiry: systems, specifically, economic and monetary systems. As part of their exploration of the Bank of England, they investigated why societies developed currency and how trade evolved over time. One captivating discovery? The use of cowrie shells as one of the earliest forms of money across Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Through this lens, students examined questions like: What makes something valuable? How do communities agree on systems of exchange?

Meanwhile, Grade 4 remains deeply immersed in their unit on interdependence, focusing on endangered animals and human responsibility. Their passion has led to innovative action project, from designing awareness campaigns to proposing conservation solutions that protect habitats and species. These young advocates are learning that knowledge leads to agency, and agency leads to change.

MAP Growth Assessments: Monday, February 2 – Thursday, February 5

Next week, our students in Kindergarten 3 through Grade 5 will participate in the winter round of MAP Growth assessments. These adaptive assessments are not about “passing” or ranking students, they are designed to measure individual growth over time. By comparing this week’s results with their fall baseline data, we gain valuable insights into each child’s unique learning trajectory: where they’ve made significant progress, where they’re ready for new challenges, and where they might benefit from additional support.
MAP Growth tracks personalized progress, celebrating that a student who began the year below grade-level benchmarks may show remarkable growth that is just as meaningful as a student working above grade level. Teachers will use this data, alongside classroom observations and student work, to tailor instruction, form flexible learning groups, and set meaningful, achievable goals with each learner. You will receive a family report in the coming weeks that highlights your child’s growth patterns and RIT scores, accompanied by guidance to help interpret the results in context.

On Friday, February 6, our students will embark on an excursion to the Heyuan Dinosaur Museum, a learning experience deeply aligned with the PYP’s commitment to learning beyond classroom walls. In the PYP framework, field trips are not “extras”; they are intentional learning engagements that bring units of inquiry to life.

The Third Mock Examinations Commence
The main event of the week will be the official commencement of the Third Mock Examinations. This series of exams represents a critical rehearsal for the final challenges, allowing students to gauge their preparedness, refine their exam-taking skills, and identify areas for final consolidation.
下周的重头戏将是第三次模拟考试的正式举行。这一系列考试是应对最终挑战的关键演练,旨在帮助同学们评估自身的准备情况、磨练应考技巧,并明确最后阶段的巩固方向。
We are particularly encouraged to note that students from D11 will also participate in specific subjects during this mock exam period. This initiative is designed to provide our younger cohort with invaluable exposure to the atmosphere, rigor, and pacing of major examinations. Experiencing this environment firsthand is an excellent opportunity for D11 to build familiarity and reduce anxiety well in advance, setting a solid foundation for their own future endeavors.

This Wednesday’s assembly included a very special portion to honour our Scholarship recipients. Families and our IB Secondary staff and students were there to celebrate the students who received scholarships.

On Wednesday the 4th of February, students in Y6-11 will be going to UISG to enjoy presentations, house games, and a campus tour to help familiarise themselves with the staff, students, and campus at UISG ahead of the next academic year.
2月4日(周三),六至十一年级的同学们将前往UISG参加说明会、院舍游戏及校园参观,提前熟悉下学年的师生环境与校园空间。
We have the first of the DP mock examinations happening next Thursday and Friday for our Psychology students. Year Ten mock onscreen examinations will be held the following week from the 9-13th of February.
下周四、五将举行DP心理学模拟考试,十年级模拟电子测评将于2月9日至13日展开。
On Tuesday February the 10th, we will be holding Chinese New Year Celebrations with a special assembly of performances happening during Period 5 and 6.
