Dear UISZ Community,
We hope you are looking forward to a wonderful weekend. Next week at UISZ is filled with special moments that bring us closer together and celebrate our vibrant community. A BIG THANK YOU to over 50 UISZ families that attended the UISG Open Day Event to learn more about the planning underway for next year and transitions for our students.
Next Wednesday, January 21, we are excited to host our monthly Boarding BBQ Birthday event. This is a wonderful time for our boarding students to come together, enjoy good food, and celebrate friends with birthdays this month. It’s always a highlight of our community calendar.
Today, were delighted to welcome students from St. Patrick’s School in Hong Kong for an enriching exchange. This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to connect, collaborate, and learn with peers from another school. We look forward to continuing events like this centered on friendships and shared experiences.
We also want to wish the very best to our Cobra ACAMIS basketball teams as they compete in the ACAMIS Basketball Tournament hosted at UISG next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Let’s cheer them on with pride – Join Us!

This Week
Dear Primary Families,
What a vibrant and inspiring week it has been in our Primary community! Across all grade levels, our students have embraced one of the PYP’s most powerful values: collaboration. In the PYP, collaboration isn’t just about working together; it’s a foundational practice that nurtures communication, empathy, critical thinking, and student agency. When learners collaborate, they don’t just complete tasks; they co-construct understanding, respect diverse perspectives, and take shared responsibility for their learning and community.

This week offered beautiful examples of this in action:
In Grades 4 and 5, students deepened their Unit of Inquiry on Sharing the Planet and How We Organize Ourselves by researching endangered animals and the ecosystems they depend on. Working in teams, they designed persuasive posters and explored real-world charity organizations dedicated to conservation. Through this, they didn’t just learn facts; they grappled with big ideas like interdependence, sustainability, and global responsibility. Their work showed how human actions can either disrupt or support balance in natural systems, and how even young people can make a difference.

Meanwhile, our Grades 2–3 learners brought creativity and curiosity to their transdisciplinary project. They designed multilingual posters, celebrating linguistic diversity in our community. Simultaneously, they were learning about the area and perimeter. This is the heart of transdisciplinary learning: when subjects like language, art, and mathematics blend seamlessly to solve authentic problems. Students weren’tjust “doing math” or “making posters” – they were using knowledge across disciplines to express ideas meaningfully and purposefully.

Our youngest collaborators also shone brightly! In Forest School, K3–Grade 1 students stepped into leadership roles by guiding and supporting their K–K2 peers during nature explorations. They helped younger friends navigate trails, share tools, and play in collaborative challenges. Through these experiences, they practiced teamwork, patience, and care, not as abstract concepts, but as lived actions. Forest School became a living classroom where collaboration meant listening, helping, and growing together.

The week culminated in a joyful visit from our sister school, St. Patrick’s School from Hong Kong. Upper primary students welcomed their new friends with open arms, spending the morning side by side in Forest School, creating, and connecting with nature and each other.
As we reflect this week, we’re reminded that collaboration is more than a skill; it’s a mindset. It teaches our children that they are part of something bigger than themselves, and that their voices, ideas, and kindness matter. In a world that increasingly calls for cooperation over competition, these early experiences lay the foundation for compassionate, capable global citizens.

Thank you for partnering with us in nurturing these values at home and school. Together, we’re raising learners who don’t just succeed, but lift others up as they go.
Warm regards,
Ms. Karen Castro

Dear MYP/DP Students and Parents,
Student Captain celebrations
Something that should have been included in my overview last week was the celebration dinner held in honour of our departing Student Captains. Last Tuesday, the former and current Student Captains shared a meal at Haidilao. It was a night full of lovely speeches where the 2025 Student Captains shared their final words of wisdom with their successors. The new Captains also shared their goals for this year.

Thank you to our 2025 Student Captains.
Please enjoy an article about U2NESCO from our Secretary General, DP1 student Leo Park:
Last week, our school hosted the U2NESCO Model United Nations (MUN) Conference, bringing together student delegates from ZIS, QSIS, QSID, TLC, ISD, SIS, SGA, UISG, and KIS for two days of debate, discussion, and collaboration. Guided by the theme “Beyond the Boundaries, Forging a New Era,” the conference encouraged participants to step beyond familiar perspectives and engage thoughtfully with global issues.
The conference was led by a dedicated Secretariat team that worked closely with chairs and delegates to ensure a well-organized and academically strong experience. Leo Park served as Secretary General, overseeing the overall direction of the conference and guiding delegates to approach debate with responsibility, open-mindedness, and a global mindset. Working alongside him, Anna Jung, the Deputy Secretary General, supported conference coordination and organization while helping foster an inclusive environment that encouraged open dialogue and constructive diplomacy.
Committee sessions were supported by the chairing team under Emily Hong, the Under Secretary General and Head of Chair, who ensured chairs led debates smoothly and that delegates followed procedure while engaging actively in discussion. Emily Kim, the Head of Admin, and Leo Deng, the Deputy Head of Admin, supported the daily flow of the conference so delegates and chairs could focus fully on committee work. Jasmine Kim, serving as Head of Logistics, ensured that venues and schedules ran smoothly throughout the conference, while Jerry Fan, Deputy Head of Design, contributed visual materials that supported communication and the overall conference experience.
Across committees, delegates engaged in in-depth debate on a wide range of global challenges. The Education Committee discussed digital literacy in rural communities and education continuity in conflict zones, while the Health Committee focused on pharmaceutical equity in low- and middle-income countries and rebuilding mental health systems in post-conflict societies. The Promoting Science Committee examined the regulation of AI-generated content and the protection of data in cross-border digital spaces.
Humanitarian and social issues were central to discussions in the Human Rights Committee and General Assembly Third Committee (GA3), where delegates debated refugee protection, the rights of marginalized communities, the prevention of child soldier recruitment, and humanitarian access in conflict areas. Environmental and economic topics were addressed in the Environment and Sustainable Development Committee and the G20 committee, with delegates discussing regenerative agriculture, marine conservation, AI governance, and financial stability for developing nations. Bilingual Chinese committees further enriched the conference by allowing middle and high school students to debate environmental and social issues in both English and Chinese.
Throughout the conference, delegates demonstrated strong preparation, confidence, and collaboration, while chairs guided debate with professionalism and fairness. Beyond resolutions, the conference provided students with valuable opportunities to develop public speaking skills, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of international cooperation.
As we look ahead, the U2NESCO Model United Nations Conference stands as a meaningful example of student leadership, academic engagement, and cross-school collaboration within our wider school community.
