We are just a few hours away from the annual UIS schools’ annual get together, UEF Family Day! This Saturday at UISG will certainly be a fun day to all UISZ students and families, with sports activities, comfort food and smiles everywhere.

Meanwhile, our Year 10 and 12 students are completing their MYP eAssessments and DP exams. It is a tough and strenuous stretch for them and we can tell they are taking this with the best attitude.

On-site College Counselling:
IBDP 1 students had the pleasure to meet Ms Ye In Oh, last Tuesday. Ms Oh met the group as a whole and then met students individually for a personalized College Counseling session. To ensure transition, Ms Oh is in close contact with Ms Chunping Lai, DP Coordinator, and Ms Lindsey Walsh, incoming College Counselor at school.

Online Counselling : We are pleased to inform that all secondary students were introduced to Ms Lucy Lau, our Whole School Counselor during their house period last Wednesday. This is a kind reminder that students can meet the counselor online from Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 11:00 am. This service is available until June 16. Ms Lindsey Walsh will be our new onsite Counselor from the beginning of the school year 2023.

The finals for the Inaugural Interhouse Football Tournament were held this past week on Wednesday. The finals were a closely contested affair with Wind House narrowly beating a valiant Fire House 2-1 for first place. The bronze medal game was also a cagey affair with Earth House defeating Water House 2-0. The learners were also gifted with a match to remember as some of their parents played against their teachers. The result of this game has somehow been “misplaced” by the officials, perhaps a rematch is in order…

MYP 国际文凭中学课程
Our Middle School students have been busy discovering new concepts about weather and climate, travel writing, beauty, and poetry in the Language Acquisition classes for the last several months. Years 6 and 7 worked on researching weather phenomena, what they are, and how they impact different areas around the planet. Focusing on a more emotional aspect of their nature observations, students let themselves be carried by their imagination and produced their own haiku poems. Unit 4 is all about beauty, how it was seen in the past, how it has changed, and how it divides and groups people in communities small and large. Although most of the students’ work and research is concerned with the exterior evolution of clothes and physical appearance, they are also aware that beauty is a bigger concept including personality traits also. To connect with our community, Year 6 and Year 7 have started a project that welcomes everyone’s participation: students, teachers, staff members, visitors, and parents. People are encouraged to share, in any language, one word that makes them think about Beauty, a feature that can change a person from a stranger to a friend, from “nobody” to “somebody” in the eyes of the beholder. Later, a small section was added, “Then and Now”, underlining that as people go through life, their views change influenced by different experiences.

Years 8 and 9 discovered different aspects of travel and travel writing. From old novels to brochures and blogs. They produced their own descriptions of a site from the traveler’s perspective in which small details, people’s indistinct chatter, a variety of fragrances and savor, beautiful or overwhelming landscapes were introduced. As part of the last unit, Years 8 and 9 are working on poems, analyzing pieces produced years or decades ago, but also more recent ones in songs where poems are supported by music and videos. They develop a better understanding of artistic movements and their mark on different artistic expressions: music, literature, painting, dance, fashion, architecture, and film.
八、九年级的同学们从旧小说、宣传册到博客，他们阅读了多种文本以探索旅行与游记的各个方面。每个人都以一位旅者的视觉对一个地点进行了描述，这些表述当中包括了各种小细节、路人的闲聊、各种香气与品味、美丽的或震撼人心的风景……
而最近，同学们开始了最后这个单元的“诗歌”部分，他们既分析了数年前乃至数十年前的诗作，也分析了近年的歌曲中的诗句，这是诗歌依托于音乐与视频的一种形式。在这个单元中，同学们对艺术运动及其在音乐、文学、绘画、舞蹈、时尚、建筑和影视等不同艺术表达中的“指纹”有了更深刻的认知。
8학년과 9학년은 여행과 여행 글쓰기의 다양한 측면을 탐구했습니다. 고전 소설부터 브로셔와 블로그까지. 학생들은 여행자의 관점에서 여행지의 작은 디테일, 사람들의 생생한 수다, 다양한 향기와 맛, 아름답거나 압도적인 풍경을 소개하는 자신만의 여행지를 묘사했습니다. 마지막 단원의 일환으로 8학년과 9학년은 시를 공부하며 수년 또는 수십 년 전에 만들어진 작품뿐만 아니라 시가 음악과 영상으로 뒷받침되는 노래의 최근 작품도 분석합니다. 학생들은 음악, 문학, 회화, 무용, 패션, 건축, 영화 등 다양한 예술적 표현에 대한 예술적 움직임과 그 흔적을 더 잘 이해하게 됩니다.
Language Acquisition students finish the school year with an improved sense of community and look at the world from a new perspective. I hope they continue broadening their horizons by keeping an open and inquisitive mind.
在本学年结束之际，同学们的社区意识提高了，且学会从新的角度看待世界。衷心祝愿他们持守着这份开放的心和好奇心，不断拓宽视野。

DP Y11 Chemistry students focus their study on the theories of acids and bases. They learnt how to test for acidity and alkalinity using suitable indicators, and perform calculations related to the concentration of H+ (aq) and the pH value of a strong acid solution. The students also applied the concepts of concentration of solution and used the results of acid-alkali titrations to solve stoichiometric problems.
这周，11年级化学班的同学们主要进行了酸和碱的理论探索。在课上，他们学习如何使用恰当的指示剂来测试酸度和碱度，并进行了H+ (aq)浓度和强酸溶液pH值相关的计算。还应用了溶液浓度的概念，并利用酸碱滴定的结果来解决化学计量学问题。

Recently, in Chinese class, DSE students learned an argumentative article, On the Six Fallen States, which was written by Su Xun in the Northern Song Dynasty. Students reviewed this article by playing the games that were designed by their Chinese teacher. They also collaborated with group members to choose a topic and write a well-structured argumentative article based on this topic. In their articles, students were required to imitate the writing skills used by the On the Six Fallen States, such as using the past to satirize the present, contradict other people’s viewpoint before state your opinion, and many rhetorical devices. After completed their articles, each group used the criteria of DSE Chinese Paper 2 (Writing) to self-assessed and peer-assessed. In this way, students not only understood the article which have been learned, but also familiar with the marking criteria of paper 2.
近期，DSE的同学们在语文课上研读了一篇议论文——北宋苏洵的《六国论》，并在老师所设计的游戏中巩固了知识。他们还与组员一起设定一个论题，随后围绕该论题写成一篇结构完整的议论文。在议论文中，各组需模仿《六国论》所使用的写作技巧（如：“借古讽今”的写作目的、“先破后立”的引题方法以及多种修辞手法）。
议论文写作完成后，各组根据DSE中国语文科试卷二（写作卷）的评分标准进行自评与互评。如此，同学们不仅理解了《六国论》这篇文章，也熟悉了试卷二的评分标准。
최근 DSE 학생들은 중국어 수업 시간에 북송 시대 소손의 논증 에세이 ‘육국(六國)’을 공부하고 선생님이 고안한 게임을 통해 지식을 통합했습니다. 또한 그룹 구성원들과 함께 논제를 정하고 이를 중심으로 완전한 구조의 논증 에세이를 작성했습니다. 에세이를 작성할 때 각 그룹은 에세이의 목적, ‘현재를 풍자하기 위한 과거의 사용’, 주제를 소개하는 ‘세분화 후 확립’ 방법, 다양한 수사학적 기법 등 『육삼국지』에서 사용된 글쓰기 기법을 모방하도록 요청받았습니다. 에세이를 작성한 후 각 그룹은 DSE 중국어 2(작문)의 채점 기준에 따라 자신과 서로를 평가했습니다. 이런 식으로 학생들은 에세이 ” 육국”을 이해했을 뿐만 아니라 Paper 2의 채점 기준에 익숙해졌습니다.
