This year, some dedicated Grade 8 Theatre students chose to read Harry Potter’s Care for Magical Creatures class textbook, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” written by Newt Scamander (and JK Rowling). This is a new tradition that takes place during the last week of October, as we bring the Performing Arts into the Atrium space for a lunchtime event. Miss L. chose a script reading because it often relieves the anxiety of improvisational theatre sports and speaking or reading English for those who are new to the language. At the table, those who are more confident can read with dramatic flair and serve as an example for newer language learners or shy students. All secondary students (and teachers) are welcome to join! This year, several students from upper primary who have a passion for reading and all things Harry Potter were also invited to join the table read! It has been a glorious week of magical zoology, fun times, good reads, and sweet treats from Honeydukes of Diagon Alley!

Reading aloud isn’t just about performance – it’s a powerful tool for literacy and connection. When students read scripts together, they strengthen fluency, comprehension, and confidence. They explore language through character, emotion, and storytelling, making reading active and meaningful. Group reading also builds a sense of ensemble. Theatre becomes a safe space where every voice matters and creativity thrives. Through shared reading, our teens aren’t just becoming better readers – they are becoming thoughtful, expressive, and collaborative artists.

Do keep a keen eye out for one of our other Visual or Musical Arts events happening throughout the year in the Atrium! The performing arts – theatre students will be showcasing their work this coming November, and we look forward to giving you the gift of entertainment!
