At UISG, our commitment to nurturing every student’s potential is at the heart of our mission. Nowhere is this more evident than in the dynamic evolution of our English as an Additional Language (EAL) program this year. With a strategic, data-informed, and collaborative approach, we are not just teaching English, we are empowering students to thrive across the entire curriculum, fostering remarkable gains in confidence and capability.
A Targeted, Responsive Approach in Primary
In our Primary Division, we have transformed support into a precise, personalized engine for growth. Moving beyond a one-size-fits-all model, we’ve increased targeted interventions through frequent small-group and one-on-one sessions. These focused bursts concentrate on the core pillars of academic success: vocabulary, reading fluency, oral language, and academic writing.

But our work doesn’t stop at instruction. The true magic lies in our responsive cycle: reviewing student data every few weeks to adapt support, ensuring every child makes steady, measurable progress. This agile model extends into all classrooms, where teachers expertly weave language development into every subject, from mathematics to specialist areas, ensuring learning is cohesive and contextualized.

The results speak for themselves. From Semester 1 to Semester 2, we saw a significant shift: a 33% decrease in the number of Grade 1-5 students requiring EAL support. For those continuing in the program, many now need less support or have honed in on a single focus area, a testament to their soaring fluency elsewhere. This success is powered by a culture that celebrates literacy — through increased student agency, showcased writing, enriched classroom libraries, and vibrant collaboration with our school library.

Strategic, Integrated Support in Secondary
In the Secondary Division, our EAL strategy deepens to meet the complex academic demands our students face. Support is both targeted and seamlessly integrated.
Our EAL teachers provide intensive skill-building through one-to-one and small-group tuition, often during lunchtimes, to strengthen reading, writing, and academic vocabulary without conflicting with core lessons. Foundational reading skills are nurtured during advisory periods, building confidence with academic texts.

A standout innovation in semester one was our integrated support in Grades 6 and 7, where EAL teachers pulled out small groups to blend Individuals and Societies content with explicit literacy instruction. This means students build essential reading and writing skills through their subject learning, making it immediately relevant and powerful.

Furthermore, EAL specialists ‘push-in’ to mainstream Science, Math및 Individuals 그리고 Societies lessons, providing real-time scaffolding in the most linguistically challenging subjects. This is underpinned by close collaboration with content teachers to co-plan accessible, supportive lessons.

Looking to the future, we are committed to supporting students right through to graduation. Diploma Programme students regularly seek guidance on essay writing, formal register, and exam techniques. Building on this, we are excited to launch regular DP seminars next year, focused on advanced academic writing and performance strategies to pave the way for university success.
A Community Effort, A Shared Success
These achievements are a testament to the incredible hard work of our students and the dedicated adaptability of our teachers across all departments. At UISG, EAL is not a separate program — it is a shared philosophy of inclusion, access, and high expectations.

We are building more than linguistic proficiency; we are building confident, capable learners equipped to own their educational journey. Our evolving EAL program stands as a proud cornerstone of UISG’s promise: to ensure every student has the tools, support, and belief to excel.
Together, we are not just closing language gaps — we are opening doors to a world of opportunity.
