A Taste of Korea : Kimchi Cooking Class at UISG

This past Tuesday morning, May 19, the air at UISG was filled with the wonderful aroma of garlic, chili, and fermented goodness. Around 30 parents from across the globe gathered for a kimchi cooking class organized by Jung Eun from our Admissions Office, with heartfelt support from the Korean parent community.

Together, they made traditional kimchi and crispy kimchi pancakes, laughing and sharing stories as they worked. It was a beautiful sight: parents from different cultural backgrounds, hands deep in chili paste, bonding over food.

Beyond the delicious results, the morning was about something deeper—building community. For a few hours, the canteen became a small village. And at the end, each parent took home the kimchi they had made with their own hands to share with their families.

Thank you to everyone who joined and made this such a warm, memorable gathering.

PYPx Spotlight : From Inquiry to Impact

This week, our Grade 5 students showcased the remarkable culmination of their PYP journey through their Exhibition presentations to the UISG community. Guided by the central idea that taking action can lead to significant change, students embarked on an authentic inquiry cycle, researching diverse and meaningful topics—from animal testing and Korean history to global warming and food additives. Their dedication was evident in every presentation.

What impressed us most was their confident command of each subject, speaking eloquently about their findings and proposed actions with genuine passion. The presentations opened with a beautifully composed and performed song that elegantly summarized their PYP learning journey, setting a powerful tone for what followed.

Beyond research and presentation skills, these students demonstrated the true spirit of the IB learner profile by taking meaningful action on their chosen issues. Whether advocating for animal welfare, preserving cultural heritage, or promoting environmental sustainability, they moved from inquiry to impact. This week’s Exhibition exemplified how young learners can become informed, thoughtful changemakers in our community. We’re incredibly proud of their growth and commitment to making a difference!

Cambridge in the House :A Special Visit from Dr. Matthias Dörrzapf
This Monday, UISG hosted Dr. Matthias Dörrzapf—a mathematics professor and former Senior Tutor at St. John’s College, Cambridge, where he remains actively involved in admissions today. He holds a PhD from Queens’ College, Cambridge, conducted postdoctoral research at Harvard, and has worked with Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt and New York.

He delivered an engaging talk to UISG and UISZ students from Grades 9-11, along with parents. Dr. Dörrzapf demystified the Cambridge interview process, explained what makes Cambridge special, offered guidance on personal statements, and shared admissions statistics across different countries—China, Singapore, the UK, and beyond. This comparative view helped our students think critically about the admissions process and better prepare themselves.

He also took thoughtful questions about the future of mathematics and AI, answering each with remarkable depth.

A truly special opportunity. Heartfelt thanks to Ms. Dorothy Wong, Board Director and Chair of the UEF Board, for arranging this unforgettable experience for our students.
