May 29, 2026:Looking Ahead to June – Final Stretch of the Academic Year
UISG 커뮤니티 여러분,
As we prepare to enter June next week, we begin the final stretch of the academic year. It is a time to recognize how far we have come together and to approach our remaining weeks with focus, care, and purpose.
Next week is an especially meaningful one. On Monday, we mark Children’s Day alongside the Grade 10 Completion Ceremony—a fitting opportunity to celebrate both our youngest learners and our emerging graduates. Throughout the week, I encourage you to visit the PYP/Early Years Art Exhibition 및 Personal Inquiry Exhibition, both of which reflect the creativity, curiosity, and depth of our students’ learning.
I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to the students, parents, and staff who volunteered their time and insights through our strategic planning work. Your feedback is invaluable, and we look forward to incorporating your voice into our planning for the coming year.
감사합니다,

End-of-Year
UPTA 전체 학부모 회의

Our final UPTA All Parents Meeting of the year ended on a heartfelt note. UPTA reviewed their contributions over the past year, and Head of School Dr. Mullen introduced our new teachers via a PowerPoint presentation. Grade 9 students confidently took the stage to explain their own chair designs, drawing warm applause. The university counsellor shared the Class of 2026’s admission results, while the athletics department presented awards for both Primary and Secondary divisions and celebrated recent competition achievements. We also unveiled exciting summer renovation projects.

Then came the most touching moment: Ms. Dorothy Wong, Board Director and Chair of the UEF Board, placed the necklace on UPTA Co-Chair Cindy. Twenty-three years, three children graduated from our school — she has guarded this community in the simplest way, through the longest years. Cindy, our gratitude comes from the bottom of our hearts, and belongs to every one of us.

Book Swap Bash:
A Summer Reading Extravaganza

Our final book swap of the year has arrived, and it’s a summer reading extravaganza! Students brought books from home they’ve outgrown to exchange for fresh stories they haven’t discovered yet. This special end-of-year event offers an incredible incentive: bring one book, take two home! Our enthusiastic student council members took the lead, expertly guiding classmates through our diverse collection and sharing personalized recommendations.

The shelves overflowed with treasures spanning multiple languages—Korean, Chinese, English, Japanese, and German—ensuring every reader finds something magical. From colourful picture books to engaging chapter books and fascinating non-fiction, there’s something for every interest and reading level.

BOOK SWAP
On Friday, we welcomed parents and teachers to our second community book swap, celebrating reading across our entire school family. This wonderful initiative fosters a love of literature throughout our community.

Happy Summer and Happy reading!

Little Scientists, Big Thinkers: Owning
Our Learning Through Documentation

This week in K1, our young scientists continued exploring materials, but we took an exciting new step. After weeks of investigating how materials react when we heat, shine light, smash, freeze, and submerge in water, we are now thinking and working like real scientists. That means: being curious with intention, testing ideas, and most importantly, documenting what we notice in our very own science journals.

Each day, we set aside time for journaling. Children can choose which of the day’s experiments to record, using prompts that guide but don’t limit them. Some draw the seven colours of a rainbow they created with light and cut glass. Others invent symbols to show a baking soda, oil, and vinegar reaction that created bouncing bubbles. And when we made a cake using melted ice cream as an ingredient, they observed the ice cream change from solid to liquid, then mixed it with dry ingredients to form something new entirely, a delicious example of how heat transforms materials.

They are not copying a teacher’s model. They are making their own meaning using pre-writing lines, drawings, and personal symbols to capture what they see, think, and wonder.
But here’s what we love most: Ask a K1 scientist what they did this week, and they won’t just list an experiment. They’ll grab their journal and use it as evidence, pointing to their illustrations of rainbows, swirling colours, bouncing bubbles, or cake mixtures.

This is visible thinking in the early years. We are building not just curiosity, but the skill of noticing, the habit of recording, and the confidence to share our own discoveries. These are the tools of a lifelong learner.

Empowering Young Leaders Through Compassion and Service
The Primary School Section of Guangzhou Nanguo School hosted “Building Dreams with Childlike Hearts, Spreading Love through Charity Sale.” We were pleased that our Student Council and House Captains were invited to send representatives to this meaningful event.

This invitation offers a remarkable benefit to our UISG Young Leaders. By participating, they step beyond the classroom into a real-world setting where leadership meets hands-on action. Engaging in a charity sale designed with childlike sincerity, our students will learn to organize, communicate, and collaborate alongside peers and educators—all while contributing to a meaningful cause. Such experiences build character, strengthen community bonds, and inspire a lasting sense of responsibility toward others.

Moreover, representing our school at this event strengthens ties with Guangzhou Nanguo School and exposes our Young Leaders to diverse ways of working together and giving back. They return not only with fond memories but also with heightened confidence, a broader perspective on helping others, and practical leadership insights that no textbook can fully teach.

We appreciated Guangzhou Nanguo School’s continued support and trust. Our Young Leaders are ready to spread love and grow through this invaluable opportunity.

Summer Concert : An Afternoon of Musical Growth
On Thursday, 28 May, students, staff, and parents came together in the Multi-Function Hall to experience the annual Secondary School Summer Concert. This event celebrated months of rehearsal, dedication, and musical growth from students across Grades 5 to 11.

Performers from the UISG Orchestra, Senior Choir, Jazz Band, and other ensembles presented a diverse programme, ranging from Johann Strauss Sr.’s “Radetzky March” to Puerto Rican folk music and the beloved Japanese classic “上を向いて歩こう,” also known as “Sukiyaki”. The concert gave students the opportunity to share more classical and serious repertoire, including a performance by Grade 9 student, performing Claude Debussy’s “Claire de Lune”. This concert highlighted the technical skill, artistic expression, and ensemble collaboration. After a successful 50-minute performance, the audience, left with pride in the students’ achievement and excitement for what next year’s musicians will bring.
