Recently, the primary division art classes at UISG embarked on an inspiring project-based learning experience titled “Library Sculpture Design.” This creative unit invited students to transform old, recycled books into unique sculptures destined for display in the school library. Guided by PYP principles, the project encouraged students to engage deeply with their environment, combining artistic expression with purposeful design.
近日,UISG小学部艺术课堂开启了一项富有启发的项目式学习——“图书馆雕塑设计”。在这一创意单元中,学生将回收的旧书转化为独具特色的雕塑作品,用于装点学校图书馆。基于PYP教学原则,本项目引导学生深入感知环境,将艺术表达与有目的的设计融为一体。

Sketching and Recording Ideas in the Library

A key feature of the unit was a visit to the school library, where students observed the space closely to sketch and record ideas for the placement of their sculptures. This real-world connection allowed them to consider how their artworks would interact with the library setting, fostering empathy for the viewer’s experience and strengthening their spatial awareness—an essential part of the PYP transdisciplinary approach.
课程的一个重要环节是走进图书馆进行实地观察。学生们细致洞察空间特征,通过素描和记录的方式构思雕塑的摆放方案。这种真实情境的联结让他们深入思考作品如何与图书馆环境互动,不仅培养了对观众体验的同理心,也提升了空间意识——这正是PYP跨学科学习方法中的重要组成部分。






From Concept to Creation: Experimentation and Expression

Back in the studio, students moved from observation to creation. They experimented with materials, explored various sculptural forms, and refined their designs through iterative processes. This hands-on exploration not only enhanced their technical skills but also nurtured critical thinking, problem-solving, and reflection.
回到艺术教室,学生从观察走向实践。他们尝试不同材料,探索多样造型语言,并通过反复推敲不断完善设计。这种动手探索的过程不仅增强了他们的技艺,更培养了批判性思维、解决问题的能力和反思精神。

Students learned to balance personal artistic voice with the practical considerations of public display, embodying the PYP’s commitment to developing caring, creative, and principled learners.
