NTU Talk
UISG NEWS

This Tuesday, October 14th, was a significant day for the Utahloy International School community. We had the distinct honour of welcoming the Director of Admissions, Mr Alan Phua, and the Senior Assistant Director, Ms Ong Hue Sin, from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, who delivered information sessions at both our Zengcheng (UISZ) and Guangzhou (UISG) campuses. In the world of university admissions, where students often travel far and wide to meet with representatives, it is a special privilege when a top-tier institution like NTU brings the opportunity directly to our students.
For a university consistently ranked among the world’s best—currently 12th globally (QS 2026)—to dedicate its limited time in Guangzhou to both of our schools is a testament to the quality of our students and the strength of our community. We are deeply grateful for their visit, which provided our Grades 10-12 students with an invaluable, direct connection to one of Asia’s most prestigious academic destinations.

The sessions were marked by their engaging and insightful nature. The NTU representative did more than just present facts; they painted a compelling picture of a dynamic, forward-thinking university. They detailed NTU’s comprehensive range of programmes, its innovative interdisciplinary curriculum that encourages students to blend diverse fields of study, and its stunning, sustainable campus—the largest of its kind in Singapore.

However, the true highlight was the level of engagement from our students and parents. Following the presentation, the floor was opened to questions, and our students did not hesitate to dive deep. A recurring theme at both campuses was a desire to understand the intangible qualities NTU seeks. Students asked perceptive questions like, “What kind of student is NTU really looking for?” This moved the conversation beyond grades and scores and into the realm of character, curiosity, and intellectual agility—qualities that NTU’s educational model actively cultivates.
Other questions focused on the practicalities of broadening one’s knowledge. Inquiries about the Flexible Grading Option (FGO) revealed a student body eager to explore academic risks without fear of penalization, while discussions on undergraduate research opportunities (URECA) highlighted a drive for hands-on, real-world learning. The message from the Q&A was clear: our students were not just passively receiving information; they were actively seeking pathways and encouragement to see themselves as strong candidates for such a renowned institution.

Seeing our students from Grades 10-12 so engaged—listening intently, and asking thoughtful questions—was incredibly rewarding. This event was more than a simple university talk; it was a catalyst for ambition. In a region as academically competitive as the Greater Bay Area, with numerous schools vying for attention, it was a significant honour for both UISG and UISZ to be selected for this visit. This exclusive access provided our community with unparalleled clarity, demystified the application process for a “dream school,” and gave many students the confidence to consider NTU as a tangible and achievable goal.

We extend our sincerest thanks to the team from Nanyang Technological University for their generosity and for investing their time in our students. Their visit has undoubtedly planted important seeds for the future, and we look forward to seeing how our students’ journeys unfold.
