Celebrating Artistic Excellence

‘2B OR NOT 2B’ The DP Art Exhibition 2025 at Utahloy International School Guangzhou
The Utahloy International School Guangzhou (UISG) proudly presented its highly anticipated Diploma Programme (DP) Art Exhibition 2025, a culmination of two years of dedicated artistic exploration and creation by our talented DP visual arts students. This remarkable showcase, held in March 2025, in the ULC building of our esteemed institution, offered a captivating glimpse into the creative journeys of four exceptional young artists: Lucia and Carlos from the IB Higher Level, and Annie and Danil from the IB Standard Level.
The exhibition’s opening in March 2025, was marked by a special inauguration ceremony led by our distinguished Head of School, Dr. Daniel Mullen. His presence underscored the significance of this event in our school calendar and highlighted the importance we place on nurturing artistic talent within our educational framework.

As visitors stepped into the exhibition space, they were immediately enveloped by an atmosphere of creativity and innovation. The ULC building, transformed into a professional gallery setting, provided the perfect backdrop for our students’ diverse array of artworks. The exhibition showcased an impressive range of artistic mediums, reflecting the comprehensive nature of the DP visual arts curriculum and the individual passions of our young artists.

IB HL Students – Lucia and Carlos
Lucia and Carlos, our IB Higher Level students, presented portfolios that demonstrated exceptional depth and breadth in their chosen areas of focus. Their works showed a mature understanding of artistic concepts, a willingness to take creative risks, and a strong individual voice that sets them apart as emerging artists of note.
1. Lucia – Chen, Qianhan (HL)

Lucia’s exhibition centers on the theme of “life,” exploring various lifestyles, emotions, and experiences. It emphasizes that life is defined not just by results but by the processes filled with joy, sadness, and self-doubt. The artworks utilize diverse media, including sculpture, printmaking, and photography, to convey these themes.
The exhibition begins with “The Beginning,” symbolizing life’s blank slate, followed by “Hometown 1,” which captures rural life through cyanotype, reflecting personal experiences and community resilience. “Harvest” celebrates the dignity of rural labor, using warm tones to highlight the relationship between humanity and nature.
The “In the City” series contrasts urban life’s dynamism and isolation, while the “Construction of Contradictory Space” series challenges perceptions of identity and experience through sculpture and painting. The exhibition concludes with “The End,” showing the progression of life through color. Overall, it invites viewers to appreciate life’s complexities and find meaning in its contradictions.
2. Carlos – Zhao, Yi Ming (HL)
Carlos’s passion for classic movies has significantly shaped his artistic journey. He draws inspiration from character representation and soundtracks in films like “Scent of a Woman” and Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction.” Growing up immersed in 1980s and 1990s American culture, he found motivation in the hopefulness and emotional depth of that era, which is reflected in his abstract paintings.
Each of Carlos’s artworks carries personal significance, influenced by his complex experiences in interpersonal relationships. He intentionally uses intricate colors and avoids uniformity in his exhibitions to create a dynamic atmosphere. He thoughtfully names each piece to establish a clear connection for the audience, enhancing their experience. His goal is to provide viewers with an engaging and accessible encounter with his art, complemented by careful lighting and layout considerations.

IB SL Students – Annie and Danil
Annie and Danil, representing the IB Standard Level, equally impressed with their thoughtful and well-executed pieces. Their works reflected a solid grasp of fundamental artistic principles and a commendable ability to express complex ideas through visual means.
3. Danil Semenov (SL)
Danil’s work presented in this exhibition serves as an indirect representation of personal experiences through art, utilizing contradictory symbolism and seemingly irrelevant ideas. The aim is to express these experiences visually, transforming them into a more engaging language than mere text. Throughout the creative process, various themes and concepts are explored to subtly depict these experiences, each artwork standing alone yet contributing to a collective narrative.
The exhibition is arranged chronologically, guiding viewers through a narrative arc from beginnings to conclusions. This organization fosters interconnection among the pieces, creating a puzzle for the audience to decipher. The subtle contrasts in color, form, and symbolism establish a visual rhythm that reflects the unpredictable nature of the creative process. Ultimately, this exhibition encapsulates personal experiences through complex and contradictory art forms, arranged in a manner that may appear nonsensical. The objective is not to convey a singular message but to allow for diverse interpretations, acknowledging that each individual perceives experiences through their unique lens.

4. Annie – Lai, On Yi (SL)
Annie’s exhibition reflects my observations of the relationship between humans and nature, highlighting humanity’s detrimental behavior towards the environment. Through various mediums, She aims to provoke deep reflection on our actions and their consequences on nature. The artworks are organized thematically, beginning with “Woman in the Abyss,” which explores ecofeminism and the oppression faced by both women and nature. This is followed by “Wish to Bee,” illustrating the vibrant ecosystem threatened by human pollution. “e-Rose” uses pixelation to depict nature’s digitalization, while “Trace” demonstrates technology’s exploitation of the natural world. The exhibition concludes with “Second Spring,” symbolizing nature’s resilience amidst destruction. By utilizing similar themes, symbols, and colors throughout the display, the arrangement guides viewers in understanding the urgent issues surrounding the modern natural world, providing a memorable and visually engaging experience.

The exhibition was not merely a display of finished products but a narrative of artistic growth and personal development. Each artwork was accompanied by thoughtful artist statements, providing insights into the conceptual underpinnings, technical challenges, and personal significance of the pieces. These statements offered visitors a deeper appreciation of the intellectual and emotional journey each student undertook in creating their body of work.
The DP Art Exhibition 2025 was more than just a showcase of student artwork; it was a celebration of the power of art to communicate, challenge, and inspire. It stood as a testament to the rigorous and comprehensive nature of the IB Diploma Programme in Visual Arts, which encourages students to become thinking, inquiring, and reflective practitioners.
Throughout the five-day exhibition, the ULC building buzzed with energy as students, faculty, parents, and community members explored the artworks on display. The event fostered meaningful discussions about art, culture, and the role of creativity in education and society at large. It provided a platform for our young artists to receive feedback and recognition for their hard work, boosting their confidence and reinforcing their passion for the arts.

EXHIBITION
In conclusion, the DP Art Exhibition 2025 at Utahloy International School Guangzhou was a resounding success, embodying the school’s commitment to holistic education and the cultivation of well-rounded individuals. It showcased the extraordinary talents of our DP visual arts students and highlighted the transformative power of art education. As we look to the future, we are excited to continue fostering artistic excellence and creativity within our school community, nurturing the next generation of artists, thinkers, and innovators.

Carlos
1. Lucia – Chen, Qianhan (HL)

2. Carlos – Zhao, Yi Ming (HL)

Danil
3. Danil Semenov (SL)

4. Annie – Lai, On Yi (SL)
