The Mural Service Project is a UISG voluntary activity outside of the classroom that provides an opportunity for students and staff to collaborate and serve the school community through the art of painting on a wall. Started as a unit to end before summer last year in Year 10 Visual Arts, we expanded the initiative so all community members could participate as well. In around 2 months, we discussed, brainstormed, and planned the design which this time revolved around the new year of the Dragon with an international-minded perspective.
It was quite a challenge to plan and find common times when everyone could paint. They involved 30-minute sessions of lunch recess, after school, and during our whole school event, IFOL (International Festival of Light). Throughout this experience, students were able to demonstrate their commitment and perseverance. Approaching the end, a few students devoted their Saturday and Wednesday after school to complete the work.
From this action, students applied their approaches to learning skills (communication, social, self-management, and thinking skills) into practice, beyond the classroom. We hope this project could spark inspiration and motivation from others to be involved more when the next opportunity arises.
