UISZ values close collaboration with our families. To build and celebrate out community, once a semester we plan Community Day. Community Day is an opportunity for families to visit UISZ, observe children in classes, attend parent workshops, and join celebrations of learning. On November 20th, to mark International Day of the Child, our families came to school to attend some fantastic workshops about a variety of topics. Koen Vanhoutte, our Year 5 teacher, led a parent workshop about Concept-Driven Mathematics. Concept-Driven Mathematics is an innovative, research-supported, and high-quality approach to teaching math…and the approach we use here at UISZ. Tara O’Brien led a parent workshop about Forest School Education in the PYP. Parents learned all about our exciting Forest School program, our collaboration with the world’s leading expert in Forest School, Sarah Blackwell, and how Forest School will benefit our Primary students. Many other parent workshops were offered, about a variety of topics. To celebrate, classes also organized Publisher’s Parties. At a Publisher’s Party, student authors share their books from a Writer’s Workshop unit with families. It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our student authors! Lastly, we celebrated the arts, through a Hip-Hop dance performance. Every class prepared a hip-hop dance performance and performed on our stage in the multi-function hall.

The K,K1 & K2 Publishing Party took place on November 20th, 2024, at UISZ, during UISZ Community Day. The students published their book, “My Color Monster.” This was ignited by their inquiry into feelings during the first unit of inquiry, “Who we are,” which extends throughout the year and integrates with other units. This project was inspired by Anna Llenas’ book about emotions, leading our young writers and illustrators to create during Writer’s Workshop and STEAM class, where they used materials from our Creative Corner’s “Loose Parts” to design each page. We also collaborated with our school counselor, Ms. Lindsey, to let our young learners sort and manage their emotions effectively.

Parents expressed their pride in seeing their children, aged two to five years old, utilize their communication skills and take risks by discussing their books with numerous guests. One of the most memorable moments I experienced with this group of young writers was witnessing their teamwork and cooperation. The day before the celebration, we needed to set up our booths.

students engaged in an exploration of various celebrations to understand how different cultures express themselves. At the conclusion of this unit, students presented their findings through a PowerPoint presentation, showcasing their knowledge and insights on the diverse ways in which celebrations are observed.

We are thrilled to share the success of our Year 3 Meet the Author Publishing Party, a special event that celebrated our students’ hard work and creativity. During this activity, students showcased their first published books, which they created as part of our Fictional Narrative Unit.

The Publishing Party is an important milestone in our students’ writing journey. It not only allows them to share their stories with family and friends but also builds their confidence as young authors. By presenting their work, students gain valuable experience in public speaking and learn to take pride in their achievements.

At UISZ, we utilize the Writer’s Workshop methodology, which emphasizes the writing process and encourages students to express their thoughts and ideas freely. Through this approach, students engage in brainstorming, drafting, revising, and editing their narratives, developing essential writing skills along the way. The support from their peers and teachers fosters a collaborative environment where creativity thrives.

The Meet the Author Publishing Party was a fantastic opportunity for students to celebrate their accomplishments and share their unique stories, marking the beginning of their journey as published authors. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and look forward to seeing how their writing skills continue to grow!

Celebrating Sports Day: A Success Against the Odds
This year’s Sports Day was a remarkable testament to the spirit of our school community, showcasing resilience and enthusiasm amongst students, even when faced with unfavourable weather conditions. Originally planned for the open field, the event had to be relocated to the gymnasium due to unexpected rain. However, this change did not dampen the excitement; instead, it transformed our Sports Day into an unforgettable indoor celebration.

As students arrived, the atmosphere was electric, filled with laughter and anticipation. As the activities started, the gym became a vibrant hub of activity. Students eagerly participated in a variety of relay races and obstacle courses. The friendly competition ignited a sense of camaraderie as classmates cheered each other on, fostering teamwork and sportsmanship.

Teachers and staff members played an essential role in ensuring the day was a success. Their enthusiasm and encouragement motivated students to give their best, regardless of the change in venue. It was heartening to see students of all ages engaging in the activities, showcasing their talents and determination. The gym echoed with cheers and applause, creating a warm sense of community.Parents and families showed immense support by attending and cheering from the sidelines, adding to the vibrant spirit of the day.
