The 20th academic year of UISZ has started last Monday with a rejuvenated team of highly skilled and enthusiastic teachers and students more than ever ready to enjoy UISZ’s way of living and learning. We were particularly pleased to greet all our new students and teachers, who are confidently adapting to their new learning environment. This coming Friday, September 1st, we will have a unique opportunity to get together for the first time of the year during our Sports Day, UPAZ meeting, and UPAZ bbq. Parents will also have the opportunity to visit their teachers during the Meet the teachers from 3:45 pm to 5:00pm.
Our first UPAZ meeting with the leadership team will take place from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm in the school’s theater.

UISZ is proud of its four programmes. Over the years, the PYP (2012), the MYP (2014), and DP (2005) have help build UISZ’s wonderful story. These three IB programmes are without a doubt the essence of the school’s DNA, and UISZ is profoundly dedicated to pursue its journey with the IB.
In 2022, we welcomed a new programme, the HKDSE, which constitutes and added value to our school.
The school is now proud to offer these four programmes, as a unique offering in the region. Nestled as the foundation of our school, the PYP, MYP, DP, and DSE will continue to grow at UISZ!!

The first annual get-together is back this coming Friday on September 1st. We are looking forward to see everyone for this exciting afternoon, where the leadership will provide useful information, your children (maybe even you?) will perform on the field, and enjoy a delicious barbecue!
Let’s not forget the Meet the Teachers session from 3:45 to 5:00 pm, where you will be able to exchange a few words with your child’s teachers.

You may be aware that several countries have adopted stricter control of students’ screen time, our host country being one of them. To help us achieve a reasonable amount of screen time in our student body. We have consequently come to the conclusion to restrict the use of devices that are not included in our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy. For example, mobile devices are not to be seen during school hours at school for all our students.
To help us achieve our goals, you are invited to complete a survey (QR code and link below) that will help us better monitor your child’s screen time. 如您所知，一些国家对学生的屏幕时间采取了更严格的控制，我们的东道国就是其中之一。

Greetings, UISZC Families and Community Members!
We are excited to begin the 2023-2024 academic year! The first week of school was filled with enthusiasm, collaboration, and the spirit of community building.
Here’s a glimpse of the activities that took place across Primary:
Community Building Activities:
Our primary focus during the first week was to foster a strong sense of community among our students. Teachers organized icebreaker games, team-building exercises, and interactive classroom discussions to help students get to know each other better. These activities aimed to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where every child feels valued and accepted.
Goal-Setting Sessions:
Setting goals is an essential part of personal growth and achievement. Our students had the opportunity to engage in goal-setting sessions where they identified their academic, social, and personal objectives for the upcoming year. Teachers and staff are committed to supporting our students in reaching these goals and celebrating their progress along the way.
Establishing Essential Agreements:
To ensure a respectful and supportive learning environment, we collaborated with our students to establish essential agreements for the classroom. These agreements were developed through open discussions, allowing students to have a voice in creating a positive atmosphere for everyone. We believe that when students take ownership of the classroom norms, it leads to a more harmonious and productive learning environment.
New Curricular Programs and Initiatives:
We are thrilled to introduce exciting curricular programs that will enhance the learning experience of our students:
Friday Weekly Update on ManageBac:
We are thrilled to introduce our new communication initiative, the “Friday Weekly Update.” Starting this week, homeroom teachers will be posting a weekly update on ManageBac, our online learning platform. This update will provide information about the learning that took place this week, upcoming learning, home learning information, and photos. We encourage parents and guardians to stay engaged by checking email and/or ManageBac regularly to stay informed about your child’s learning journey.
Writer’s Workshop for Year 3-5:
This year, students in Year 3-5 will embark on a Writer’s Workshop journey. This research-supported program is widely used in prestigious international schools and focuses on developing students’ writing skills through authentic, interactive, and engaging learning. With a strong emphasis on English writing composition and conventions, Writer’s Workshop will empower our young authors to become more independent and competent writers.
Active English in Modern Foreign Language Program:
Our modern foreign language program will now include an innovative program called “Active English.” This program provides students with the opportunity to learn and practice English vocabulary across all aspects—reading, writing, speaking, listening, and presenting—through active learning methods. By immersing students in a dynamic language-learning environment, we aim to enhance their language proficiency and boost their confidence in English communication. The modern foreign language program, spanning from K3 to Year 5, will rotate between Korean, French, and Active English every 6 weeks. This approach ensures that all students benefit from learning about different languages and cultures, fostering intercultural understanding and global awareness. The MFL program begins on August 28th and teachers will notify parents about which class their year level attends first in the Friday Weekly Update.
As we move forward, we are excited to continue building a strong and supportive community where each child’s unique abilities and strengths are celebrated. We look forward to a year filled with growth, learning, and meaningful connections.

To all our members of the UISZ community,
This week marked the start of the 2023-2024 academic year. As the new MYP Coordinator, it was a heartwarming experience welcoming new students as well as returning students to the campus. Students began at different points of their MYP journey. Our Year 6 students, are at the beginning of this journey, learning about MYP, getting to know their teachers, and navigate the complexities of joining the secondary school. Our Year 10 students enter the final year of their MYP journey with opportunities ahead in the Personal Project and e-Assessments. Other students are in the middle of their journey and will encounter challenges and opportunities along the way that our teachers will guide them through with professionalism and positive expectations. Our first week ends on a positive note that will set the tone for a great academic year. In the coming weeks, students will engage in inquiry-based activities that will help them develop the 21st century skills needed for an everchanging world. I look forward to sharing the progress of this journey each week during the academic year.

It’s so happy to see the returning and new faces this week. All teachers and admin staff are busy guiding and supporting students to settle down for the new school year. DP one students are excited about the DP curriculum and exploring new concepts in their selected subjects. DP two students have spent a juicy holiday; they visited people, attended tutorial lessons, and were busy with Extend Essay(EE) writing, portfolio works, and of course, university application preparation. And now, they are already fully engaged in their studies. To better support the university application, our counselor, Ms. Lindsey Walsh, is going to meet DP two students one by one from next week. We are so excited about the fluent beginning of the school year and look forward to seeing you at the upcoming UPAZ BBQ and Cobras Sports Day.

Throughout this week, our halls have been filled with the vibrant hum of learning. Our educators have seamlessly transitioned back into their roles, fostering an environment that encourages critical thinking and creativity.
The collaboration among our staff members has been instrumental in creating a smooth start to the academic year. From our administrative team ensuring efficient operations to our support staff assisting in various ways, the unity within our community is truly commendable.

As we step into this new chapter, I am truly excited about the opportunity to build relationships with each one of you throughout your child’s stay at our school. The first few days back saw a positive start. Witnessing the joyful sounds of friendship and connection echoing through our hallways as students make new acquaintances and reunite with old friends brings immense satisfaction. The sense of community that’s already forming is a testament to the spirit and camaraderie that defines our boarding program.

Our students have been actively participating in orientation sessions here in the boarding house. These sessions cover a range of topics, including our expectations, behavior policy, device management guidelines, daily routines, and the various avenues of support available to them. We believe that providing them with a strong foundation of knowledge and understanding will contribute to a smooth and fulfilling boarding experience.
This week, we are dedicated to further developing the sense of unity within our boarding community. Our boarding team will be overseeing a variety of sports activities and indoor sessions in our gym, dance studio, common rooms, basketball court, and other spaces. These activities aim to foster bonds among the students and encourage a collaborative atmosphere that resonates with our values.
In boarding we are also excited to start utilizing Reach Boarding Software to improve pastoral care, record-keeping and track student activities and sign outs. We will update you with more information in the coming weeks.
