We are slowly but surely heading towards the end of the semester with all activities, tasks, projects, coming with it. It starts next week with the Festival of the Arts, where all families are invited to participate. Next comes a Debate competition on the 13 with some schools, quickly followed by the summative assessment week in secondary and various projects in primary. We shall loosen up and have some fun during the last two days, with special activities for our students.

Festival of the Arts: our annual Festival of the Arts is coming up this coming Thursday, December 7 from 1pm onwards. A bus service is available for parents wishing to join. It will represent a unique opportunity for our students to showcase the artistic progress they made in class.

Year 5 to 12 trip to Jungle adventure
On Thursday, December 21, students from Year 5 to 12 are cordially invited to travel to the Jungle Adventure Park in Huangpu where they will make their way from trees to trees wearing a harness and a helmet in a perfectly safe environment. A registration form will go out soon.

Action is an essential part of the Primary Years Programme. It sets the PYP apart from many other approaches to education. In the PYP we believe that learning does not end when our students leave our classroom. Learning also does not end when a unit of inquiry is wrapped up. Instead, through action, we encourage students to continue their learning independently. Some students may choose to dig deeper into a topic and inform themselves. Other students may find ways to take responsibility and teach others about what they have learned. Still others may change their behavior or convince others to do the same. Action takes many forms – it is personal and has to come from the child.

That said, if we expect students to take action, we want to make sure that they are equipped with the skills they need. We also must give our students opportunities to experiment with different forms of action in a more guided setting. Over the past few weeks, our Year 4 and 5 students engaged in a Unit of Inquiry about non-profit organizations. We studied examples of non-profit organizations and eventually founded four organizations to improve our school community:

- An organization to teach healthy and culturally diverse cooking skills through an upcoming, student-led ECA;
- An organization to encourage positive behavior during recess;
- An organization to persuade our all UISZ students to be more aware of animal rights; and
- An organization to keep our campus clean and litter-free.

Even when the unit on non-profit organizations ended, the hallways and playground was still buzzing with initiatives and projects related to their organization. Many students even continue their work at home, holding online meetings to discuss further plans. It is inspiring to see how these young people continue to come up with initiatives to further their organization’s goal.

Last Wednesday, our Year 4 and 5 students proudly presented their own nonprofit organizations. This was their chance to persuade their younger schoolmates to join their organization or take part in one of their initiatives.

MYP 国际文凭中学课程 중등교육과정
Dear parents and community members,
We are rapidly approaching the end of our first semester in our students’ MYP journey, yet there is still much to come at UISZ. This past week, on International Day of the Child, our MYP coordinator, Scott Gibson, presented a workshop that explained how the grading system in the MYP works. This workshop will be repeated in February 2024. In the MYP, all students are required to participate in one interdisciplinary unit per academic year where two subject teachers collaborate and plan activities across a shared theme or concept. For the upcoming Festival of Arts, the Year Seven students have participated in an interdisciplinary unit between design and art creating puppets. Interdisciplinary units allow for students to understand bodies of knowledge from two or more disciplines or subject groups, to integrate them and create new understanding.
Next Thursday, December 7th will be the Festival of Arts which will feature MYP student work and performances. We encouraged parents and community members to attend as our students have put in a great deal of time and effort to prepare. It has been a long semester and summative assessments are coming in December, but our students continue to show the dedication and work ethic as principled and balanced learners. We look forward to seeing our students finish the first semester on a positive note.

DP 国际文凭大学预科课程 디플로마 과정
In Chinese Language and Literature course of this semester, DP year 11 students focus on different types of non-literary texts. They learned about the definition, characteristics and language style of non-literary genres, such as advertisements, news, and blogs. Afterwards, they classified these genres into three categories for further study. Currently, they have completed the study of genres with argumentative nature. They reviewed the relevant literary devices which demonstrated frequently in those genres by creating mind maps and applied the knowledge and skills that they’ve learned to analyze articles from the past exam papers. In addition, students also learned how to analyze and evaluate images. During the learning process, everyone communicated frequently and provided feedback to their classmates actively. They learned from classmates’ strong points and made progresses together.

HKDSE 香港中学文凭课程 홍콩 중등교육과정 프로그램
The mathematics class has arranged exercises for HKDSE simulation Paper 1 this week.
Students learned how to arrange the review time. Please ask teachers for advice when you have questions. Besides, students are required to read the questions carefully, pay attention to the calculation process and the accuracy of the answer, and do not ignore any detail.
I believe that students will be able to achieve excellent results in final exam!

Firstly, I am excited to announce an upcoming boarding Christmas event that we are all looking forward to. On the 21st of December, we will be hosting a festive Christmas-themed evening for our boarding students. The event will include a delicious barbeque meal, activities such as watching Christmas movies, decorating cookies, and making Christmas cards. We encourage all students to join us for this special event. Flex boarding applications are welcome on a first come first serve basis, so please sign up as soon as possible.

After the break, we have a new initiative that we will be rolling out. We will be introducing a monthly report that will provide brief feedback on students and their performance in boarding. This report will cover areas such as community involvement, study lab engagement, room tidiness, and more. We believe this will allow us to have more frequent communication with you as parents, better support our students and help them thrive in the boarding environment.

I also wanted to take a moment to celebrate some recent achievements. Last week, we had a fantastic boarding barbecue where we recognized our boarders of the month. Congratulations to Samantha from Year 12 for being named Boarder of the Month. Samantha has shown great respect for her teachers, and discipline, and has been a supportive figure to our primary flexi boarders during the Halloween party. Well done, Samantha!
