In the weeks leading up to the Spring Festival, our school will be abuzz with various events and activities. First on the agenda is the Model United Nations (MUN) conference, known as U2NESCO here at UISZ, where our students will showcase their diplomacy and negotiation skills. We are confident that their participation will bring honor to our school. Please note that those conference days must be considered as regular school days, and attendance is mandatory.
Following the MUN conference, we will gather as a community to commemorate the Spring Festival. This celebration of culture and traditions will be a moment of unity and reflection for all. Let us remember to cherish the connections we have with one another as we enter the new year.
Alongside these festive happenings, we also want to remind students about important assessments. The WIDA and MAP examinations will be held during this time, providing valuable insights into our students’ progress and academic growth. Additionally, the mock examinations will help our IB and DSE students prepare for their upcoming final exams.
As we navigate through this busy period, we encourage parents and families to support their children’s studies and encourage balanced lifestyles. A strong foundation in both academic and personal development is crucial for our students’ success.

U2NESCO: UISZ’s own Model United Nations conference Jan18-20 (Years 6-12 students, IB and DSE)
On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, January 18-20, Year 6 to 12 students, IB and DSE, will participate in our school’s very own MUN conference. They will be joined by delegates from four other schools, who will engage in passionate conversations, discussions, and debates in Chinese and English. It constitutes a prime opportunity for all to develop their language skills, communication skills, and grow their international mindedness. You will find more information below:
- Attendance is mandatory. Absent students will be marked as absent, and a call home will be made.
- Dress code is formal. Since students will represent a country, they will act as diplomats and ambassadors. Formal/business type attire is expected.
- Flexi-boarding will be free for UISZ secondary students.
We are all excited to see our students share and expand their international knowledge and skills during this long-awaited event, created, led, and coordinated by UISZ students, for the advancement of all.

We are excited to announce upcoming community-building initiatives which will facilitate greater collaboration between school and home. We value school-to-home connection and know that communication and collaboration support student wellbeing and academic achievement. Starting in January, Primary teachers and leadership will host “Parent Coffee Mornings.” Parent Coffee Mornings are an opportunity for parents, homeroom teachers, and Primary leadership to meet. During the Parent Coffee Morning everyone will have the opportunity to socialize, learn about the year level curriculum, and learn about child development. Every age and stage of child development is unique, with its own unique opportunities and challenges. We look forward to welcoming parents here on campus at the Cobra Cafe. Parents will also have the opportunity to visit their child’s classroom and participate in a lesson or celebration of learning.

After the success of International Day of the Child and Parent Open Day, we are pleased to announce the next UISZ Open Day and Parent Workshop on February 29th! Parents are welcome to visit their child’s classroom during period 1, 8:40-9:35 and then join-in on parent workshops about a variety of topics including, “Writing Development and Writer’s Workshop, Action and Agency in the PYP,” and more. MYP 国际文凭中学课程 중등교육과정
Music in MYP for the past term has developed as a natural progression from known to unknown, leading students to explore, understand and practice knowledge and skills necessary for a future musician. Understanding of basic elements of music is the core of our learning, together with reading and writing skills. Main outlets for practice are singing and playing instruments.
The voice is the first instrument given to us at birth. It is the connecting link between our inner self and outer self. A good instrumentalist should be singing, no matter how good. If he can translate his mental understanding of the musical language through voice first, then the instrumental sound has a different meaning.
In our regular classes we often start with singing, sometimes music games, anything that connects our analytical mind to our voice and body. As a result, any classroom musical instrument we use for the new knowledge has more sense and becomes easier.
In the Festival of Arts, on 7th December 2023, we displayed the results of this kind of learning approach, the performance being both a perfected form of practice and an evaluation of our work during the term. Students had individual parts to practice on their own or in partners during free time, then they used music class time and other given time to put everything together as an ensemble. They learned the value of hard work since they had to depend on each other for a greater result, and they grew in the process not only as artists, but as responsible teammates, as well.
We were also given another chance for performing our program at the Arts Institute of Orient the following week, on December 20th , which proved to be of a different quality since the emotions of the first performance have cooled down. We also got better in touch with the responsibilities that come as a travelling performing group in relation to caring to our instruments. Students worked as a team to assemble and disassemble the stage making sure that every single item is in its’ best condition. We also welcomed a surprise performer in our midst and an individual special performance on the STEINWAY piano.
And last, but not least, our Band ECA proved the level of determination and energy that comes naturally when it’s something you choose to do with your free time. Students agreed together on the final piece and worked through many creative ideas for the performance, encouraging and stimulating each other and making the best out of a very short time. We started only in Season 2 of ECA. This shows that talent and commitment make the best recipe for success!
I hope the Band ECA continues its journey not only to improve skills but mostly to refine their work in a group’s boundaries by exploring a varied repertoire.

在 2023 年 12 月 7 日的 “艺术节“上，我们展示了这种学习方法的成果，这次演出既是一种完善的练习形式，也是对我们上学期的付出进行的一种评估。在表演前，同学们利于了课余时间对各自的部分进行了练习，有的独自练习，有的结伴练习，然后运用音乐课以及其他排练时间合奏。在这个过程中，他们不断成长，既成为一名艺术家，也成为了一名负责任的队友。
12月20日，我们还获得了在东方荟萃艺术学院表演的机会，由于首场的情绪已经平服下来，这次表演的品质也有所不同。我们更深地体会到了作为一支巡演乐团对养护乐器的责任。同学们团结协作，一起组装舞台和拆卸舞台，并确保每件器物都处于最佳状态。此外，一位让人意外的乐手加入到了我们中间，还有一位在施坦威钢琴上奉献了一场特别演出。
最后，同样重要的是我们的 ECA 乐队证明了——当你选择利用业余时间来做一件事时，决心和活力就会顺应而生。同学们一起确定下最终的表演曲目，并为演出提出了许多创意，他们相互鼓励着、彼此激励着，在很短的时间内发挥出了最佳水平。要知道，我们是从 ECA 第二季才组建的，这正正告诉我们——天才和汗水是成功的最佳秘诀！
希望我们这支 ECA 乐队继续前进，不仅技能得到提高，更重要的是通过探索不同的乐曲来提升他们的团队工作。

마지막으로, 밴드 ECA는 여가 시간을 활용해 무언가를 할 때 자연스럽게 나오는 결단력과 에너지를 증명했습니다. 학생들은 최종 곡에 대해 함께 의견을 나누고 공연을 위한 여러 가지 창의적인 아이디어를 짜내면서 서로를 격려하고 자극하며 짧은 시간 동안 최선을 다했습니다. 저희는 ECA 시즌 2부터 시작했습니다. 이는 재능과 헌신이 최고의 성공 비결이라는 것을 보여줍니다!

DP 国际文凭大学预科课程 디플로마 과정
This is the first week of the second semester, Year 11 DP students are beginning their introduction to writing Math exploration. They have already covered the first chapter of Algebra and therefore they are ready for math IA introductory sessions. This will equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively understand Math IA assessment criteria and communicate mathematical concepts and ideas through writing.
Meanwhile, in Year 12, DP students are in the final stages of completing their math exploration. They are putting the finishing touches on their research, data analysis, and conclusions. This phase involves reviewing and refining their work to ensure accuracy and coherence. Additionally, Year 12 students are being prepared for their math mock exams which will take place in the end of January. These exams will be comprehensive, allowing students to assess their understanding of the subject matter and identify areas for improvement.

HKDSE 香港中学文凭课程 홍콩 중등교육과정 프로그램
The summative assessment for the DSE Chinese language students in the last semester is mainly divided into two parts: Paper 1 and Paper 2. Paper 1 tested students’ reading comprehension abilities, while Paper 2 tested their writing abilities. Through this assessment, students reviewed the knowledge they learned in the last semester. After the SA, every student in Grade 12 wrote reflection conscientiously. During the Christmas break, Grade 12 students balanced work and rest. While relaxing, they also followed the study plan provided by the teacher and previewed classical Chinese texts such as “The Debate of Cao Gu” step by step, laying a good foundation for Chinese language learning in the new semester. Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and enjoyed some well-deserved rest and relaxation. I had the pleasure of visiting my family in Australia, whom I haven’t seen in nine years, and had a fantastic time soaking up the sun on the beautiful beaches.
As we begin this new term, I am thrilled to welcome some new students who have joined our boarding community, including a primary school boarder. Let’s extend a warm welcome to them and make them feel at home.This term promises to be short but busy, with several exciting events lined up before the Chinese New Year.
Firstly, our 7-day boarders will embark on a thrilling hike up the Guangzhou Baiyun Mountain scenic area this weekend, providing them with an opportunity to connect with nature and build camaraderie. Following that, we have the highly anticipated U2NESCO MUN Conference from the 19th to 21st, where our students will showcase their debating and diplomacy skills. Later in the month, we will be hosting the ACAMIS Basketball event from the 25th to 27th, where our talented athletes will compete against other schools. Lastly, our DP Mock Exams are scheduled to begin on the 29th of January and will run until the 5th of February.
I would like to invite you all to an informal “virtual cafe” talk on Tuesday, the 23rd of January. During this session, we can catch up, discuss any updates, and address any questions or concerns you may have. The meeting will take place on Microsoft Teams, and you can sign up using the provided QR code. I will send you an invite to your email once you have registered.
