We had a very smooth landing after the holiday with students and teachers happy to see each other again for the last stretch of this first term. You must all be aware that the end of this term is fast approaching and that Parent-Teachers Conference are around the corner… and so are Week Without Walls!
To this end, we encourage you to carefully follow all communications on ManageBac and other platform so you do not miss on important information.
Looking back, we sincerely want to thank the boarding team for a memorable Mid-Autumn Festival night on September 27. This initiative has been a tremendous success, and will definitely see a sequel next year.
Child Protection Platform
The school will soon start to use CPOMS, a child protection platform to help us offer a better follow up on child safeguarding. So that your child benefit from this coverage, you will soon receive a consent form, which you can cancel at any time via Open Apply. We are extremely happy of this added layer of child protection initiated by our Student support team!
Week Without Walls
Week Without Walls is an exciting and unique program that provides students with the opportunity to learn in new and different ways outside of the traditional classroom environment. By participating in hands-on learning experiences, students can develop a deeper understanding of themselves, others, and the world around them.
Participating in Week Without Walls can have many benefits for students, such as increased confidence, independence, and social connection. Additionally, the program can help students develop important skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, communication, and leadership.
As our students embark on this exciting journey, they should come prepared with the necessary equipment and clothing for their activities, as well as an open mind and positive attitude. It’s important for students to be flexible and adaptable, as they will likely encounter unexpected challenges and opportunities during the program.
Overall, Week Without Walls is a wonderful opportunity for students to grow and learn in new and exciting ways. We hope that all participants have a safe, enjoyable, and rewarding experience!

Thus far, the 2023-2024 academic year has brought with it lots of exciting program development in UISZ Primary. Teachers are working hard at developing a strong Writer’s Workshop program, preparing to introduce a new and academically rigorous mathematics program, and focusing on integrating authentic opportunities for English language acquisition in the PYP units of inquiry. This program development will support the academic progress of our Primary learners.
As a school, we are also committed to a holistic approach to education which supports the social and emotional development of students. Students with age-appropriate levels of social and emotional competency are equipped to challenge themselves, engage in academically rigorous learning, collaborate with peers, and make progress forward.
In Primary, we have devoted time this year to weekly “Wellbeing Assemblies.” The focus of these assemblies is developmentally appropriate and aligns with the IB Learner Profile: Caring, Principled, Open-Minded, Courageous, Inquirer, Knowledgeable, Balanced, Thinker, Reflective, Communicator. During the month of September, lower Primary students discussed, “How can I be a caring friend? What does it mean to be caring? Why is it important to be caring” while upper Primary students learned, “What is a leader? What does it mean to be a caring leader? Which leadership skills are important to be a caring leader?” During the month of October we will shift our focus to “Principled” and discuss the concepts of fairness, friendship, collaboration, and how to be a principled leader. Our school counselor, Mrs. Lindsey Walsh has also begun regularly visiting Primary classes to support wellbeing-focused discussions with groups of students.

Terry&Lora: This week we studied “People Who Influenced Me”. We got to know Lin Dan, the famous Chinese badminton player, and got familiar with the events of the Olympic Games. We completed three reading comprehension questions and conducted a speaking practice around the topic “My favorite athlete”.
Adrian: This week we studied “Which country are you from?” We learned about the national flags of different countries and the Chinese names of different countries, and we tried to complete the after-school exercises independently.

This week we studied a new text “Walking” by Mo Huaiqi. Through a public service announcement, the students learned that love needs to be passed on, and that a family must love each other, respect and love each other. Children should respect their parents and be grateful. At the same time, the students also completed dictation of new words and after-class exercises. There is another remaining task this week, that is, the students need to make a ppt around “Twenty-Four Filial Piety”, and they need to go on stage to tell everyone.

This week we completed the revision work for the midterm exam, including reading and writing. 本周我们学习新的课文莫怀戚的《散步》，同学们通过一则公益广告知道了爱是需要传递的，一家人要相亲相爱，互敬互爱。子女要孝敬父母，懂得感恩。同时同学们也完成了生字词的听写以及课后练习题。这周还有一个遗留任务，那就是同学们需要围绕《二十四孝》做一份ppt，并且需要上台讲给大家听。
九年级
本周我们完成了期中考试的订正工作，包括阅读和写作。同时我们也继续学习了文言文荀子的《劝学》，掌握了重点字词的意思，关键句子的白话译文，文言文知识以及quiz部分。同学们还学习了如何写议论文，绘制了议论文的思维导图。同时针对当今社会大家耻于学习的不良社会风气，同学们加以批判，同时劝诫未成年人一定要好好读书。在写作的过程中，同学们也对于为什么学习有了进一步的了解和认识。
6학년
Terry&Lora: 이번 주에는 “나에게 영향을 준 사람들”에 대해 공부했습니다. 중국의 유명한 배드민턴 선수인 Lin Dan을 알게 되었고, 올림픽 경기에 대해서도 알게 되었습니다. 독해 문제 3개를 풀고 “나에게 가장 중요한 것”에 집중했습니다. ‘좋아하는 운동선수’라는 주제로 스피킹 연습을 진행했습니다.
Adrian: 이번 주에 우리는 “당신은 어느 나라 사람입니까?”에 대해 공부했습니다. 우리는 여러 나라의 국기와 여러 나라의 한자 이름에 대해 배웠고, 방과 후 연습도 독립적으로 완료하려고 노력했습니다.

This week we kept continue to explore “experience” and “identity” among the five themes from IB. From the impact of language on people’s “identity” to the impact of “identity” on experience，students started with a THEME, inquiry-based study of the prescribed topic, and connected it to global issues as a global citizen.
In addition, this week we used a self-evaluation method to reflect on the summative assessment. Students have a more clearer and deeper understanding of the assessment criteria of the IB DP Mandarin ab initio Course, and at the same time, they have mastered the prescribed text types specified in this course. In this week’s math class, we were devoted to the unit ” Logarithm “. The word “Logarithm” was created by the Scottish mathematician John Napier (1550-1617). Just as division is the inverse of multiplication, logarithms are the inverse of exponents in mathematics.
We demonstrated the logarithm formula algorithm together in class.
Finally, it’s time to put what you’ve learned into practice! The students finished logarithmic homework with high quality.

I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Ms. Bella Liu, whose exceptional leadership played a pivotal role in organizing this remarkable event. Her dedication and meticulous planning ensured that every detail was executed flawlessly, contributing significantly to the event’s success.

The event featured a diverse range of activities that allowed our students to immerse themselves in the essence of the Mid-Autumn Festival. From engaging in traditional games to solving riddles and collaborative team exercises, our students embraced the spirit of the festival with great zest. The introduction of a stamp-based reward system added an element of friendly competition, encouraging active participation and teamwork.
A highlight of the celebration was the sharing of delectable mooncakes, a tradition that not only tantalized our taste buds but also served as a symbol of unity and togetherness. These moments of shared joy and laughter underscored the importance of cultural exchange, fostering mutual respect and understanding among our diverse community.
As I look back on the event’s photographs, I am reminded of the genuine connections and camaraderie that were forged during this event. These precious moments encapsulate the essence of our school community—a place where diversity is celebrated, and bonds of friendship are nurtured.
The Mid-Autumn Festival celebration was not merely an event; it was an educational and enriching experience that deepened our students’ understanding of cultural traditions. It reinforced the values of unity, respect, and harmony, which are the cornerstone of our school community.
