Dear parents, guardians, and students,
We spent the week preparing our students for the Week Without Walls that will take place next week in virtually all four corners of Eastern China! We expect to be a wonderful experience for our students in Beijing, Yangshuo and Hong Kong, and we are already contemplating other destinations for 2024-2025.
Week Without Walls represents a unique experience to our students where they will engage in various activities that they would not encounter in their daily lives, either at school or back home. It is at the core of UISZ’s Vision and Mission and must be celebrated as a true component of any true international school. While we cannot force anyone to participate in events outside school, all members should see their active participation as a moral obligation.
Plus, it’s fun!
下周，我们将在中国东部的各个角落举办 “无墙周 “活动！我们期待前往北京、阳朔和香港的学生能有一段美好的体验，现在，我们已经开始为2024-2025 年的“无墙周“思索其他目的地。
对同学们而言，“无墙周“将是一次独特的经历，他们将涉猎各种活动，而这些活动是他们在学校或家里的日常生活中不会遇到的。
“无墙周“诚然发源于是我校的愿景和使命的核心，也是任何一所真正的国际学校都会重视的活动。虽然我们无法强迫任何同学参加校外活动，但每位同学都应视之如一种道德义务而积极参与。
尤其是，这还很好玩！
저희는 중국 동부의 4개 지역에서 다음 주에 열릴 ‘벽 없는 주간’을 위해 학생들을 준비시키는 데 한 주를 보냈습니다! 저희는 학생들이 베이징, 양수오, 홍콩에서 멋진 경험을 할 수 있기를 기대하고 있습니다. 또한 2024~2025년에는 다른 지역으로 장소를 확장할 계획도 세우고 있습니다.
벽 없는 주간은 학생들이 학교나 가정에서 일상 생활에서 접할 수 없는 다양한 활동에 참여하는 특별한 경험을 선사합니다. 이는 UISZ의 비전과 미션의 핵심이며 국제학교로서 반드시 갖춰야 할 필수 요소입니다. 누구에게도 학교 밖 행사에 참여하도록 강요할 수는 없지만, 모든 구성원은 적극적인 참여를 도덕적 의무로 여겨야 합니다.

Years 5,6, 9 and 10 traveling to Hong Kong
Please do not forget to complete the health declaration code from CHINA CUSTOMS not earlier than Sunday, October 22 at 1 pm since customs officers only accept codes issued 24 hours and less.
Once done, please make a screen shot of the health code and send it to Ms Yan for Year 5 and Ms Scarlett for Years 6, 9 and 10.
Bring a camera!!! As the use of mobile phones will be extremely limited during Week Without Walls, we encourage students who want to take pictures to bring a small digital photo camera. It costs around RMB 200-250. Please note that the trip leaders and chaperones will take pictures of your child.
PLEASE NOTE THAT LARGER ELECTRONIC DEVICES, SUCH AS IPADS AND LAPTOPS, ARE NOT AUTHORIZED ON THE TRIPS.

In this week, our young learners enjoyed learning about the feelings and emotions.
First we read a book called “The Colour Monster”. We realized that there are five sorts of emotions called “ Happy , Calm,Sad, Angry and Scary.” We have different feelings or emotions and any kind of them is acceptable. It’s helpful that we can be brave to share our feelings to the people around us.
Second , We made a colour monster bottle each. Some kids chose yellow to show the “ Happy Monster” , while others chose green to show the “ Calm Monster”and blue to show “ Sad Monster”. During the class , every kid had his or her own idea. They were so brave to share their emotions. We were very proud of them!
At the end, all kids learnt that they are acceptable to have different feelings and emotions. They were also inspired to use different colour to show their feelings.They can always share and ask for help when they don’t feel good. In the meantime, they fully enjoyed making the colorful monster bottles!

Y10 Science students have concentrated on Fossil Fuels and Carbon Compounds. The students developed an understanding of the classification system of organic compounds. We have applied the understanding of organic compounds to complete our first summative assessment. The students learned that the burning of fossil fuels would eventually lead to many health and environmental problems. To solve these problems, students have explored the use of alternative energy sources, including sound energy, nuclear energy, light energy, thermal energy, solar energy and biomass energy. The students also learnt the limitations of using those alternative energy resources by doing different activities.
Additionally, we started this week with developing the ideas that electricity and magnetism are related effects that have many useful applications in everyday life. Through a series of hands-on investigations students will experience the effects of magnetism and learn about static and current electricity.

Importance of Experimentation and Artistic Research in IBDP Visual Arts Course_ 2023_24
IBDP Visual Arts is an incredible art course for secondary students that offers freedom and guidance to excel in the artistic field. Experimentation and learning from artists are important exercises for secondary art students to develop in-depth analysis and visual learning. The students study the artists of their choice based on their theme and creative direction and explore various aspects of art development. They are always recording the artistic steps of their actions and thinking in Process Portfolios and Comparative Studies. Developing documentation habits for academic excellence is mandatory in the UISZ art department. Regular sketching, finding areas of improvement, and making flow charts or mind maps help art candidates reach original creative attempts. Mistakes and quirks are welcome in the IBDP visual arts course and regular picture taking and contemplation are done for personal improvement. In the world of AI (Artificial Intelligence) we are mindful of our creative practices and maintain academic honesty as always. Candidates are also addressing global concerns and contextualizing the issues subjectively.
Art courses in IBDP also make candidates happy and express coherence as a whole.

We completed the midterm exam last week, which mainly examined classical Chinese, narrative and lyrical reading comprehension, and narrative writing. I explained the test paper in class and led the students to revise it. Regarding narrative writing, I referred to the sample essays of previous top students. The students gained a lot! This week we start a new round of study, mainly studying the classical Chinese text ” Fish is What I Desire (Mencius)”. Students need to start with the translation, original text and annotations; the main idea of the article, the general idea of the paragraph and writing techniques to fully master the classical Chinese text ” Fish is What I Desire (Mencius)”. During this period, we will arrange quick quizzes (FA), language translation practice, after-class exercises, quizzes and simulation tests (SA) to help teachers fully understand the students’ mastery level, and will explain them one by one and urge students to correct their mistakes.
Since next week is WWW (Week without walls), students need to go out for four days, which will delay five classes a week. The teaching schedule is very tight. I hope that students can keep their spirits up while combining work and rest. The DSE exam is imminent, so don’t be blindly confident or have no sense of time. Dream as horse; act your glorious youth.
上周完成了期中考试，主要考察学过的文言文，记叙抒情阅读理解以及记叙文写作。
在课上讲解了试卷并带领学生们进行了订正，关于记叙文写作，参考了往届状元的范文，同学们收获颇丰！本周开启新的一轮学习，主要学习文言文《鱼我所欲也》，同学们需要从语译、原文及注释；文章主旨，段落大意以及写作手法方面入手，全面掌握文言文《鱼我所欲也》。
期间会安排小测（FA）语译速练，课后习题，quiz以及模拟测试（SA），帮助老师全面了解学生的掌握程度，并且在之后会一一讲解并督促学生订正错误。
由于下一周就是WWW（无墙周）了，学生需要外出四天，会耽误一周五节课，教学进度非常紧张，希望学生们在劳逸结合的同时也能振奋精神，DSE考试迫在眉睫，切勿盲目自信或者没有时间观念。以梦为马，不负韶华！
