UISZ campus had a rather quiet and calm week this week as most of its students were active and away in their respective trips in Hong Kong, Yangshuo, Qingyuan and Beijing. We also had our IBDP Year 12 students analyzing water in a nearby pond for their IB Group 4 (Sciences) project and our little ones in K-Y2 going on a field trip!!!
Yes, we are sure that this week’s Week Without Walls events made a lot of happy (and tired) campers. Thank you to all staff who accompanied our students and Milan and his team from China New Horizons for the logistics.
We also respectfully thank all parents for entrusting us during this trip.

Halloween is coming!!!!
The traditional Halloween celebrations will take place on Tuesday, October 31st at school during the day, and in the evening at Dragon House. Students are invited to flexi-board that night to enjoy the Trick or treating, the Spooky Hall, and the bonfire where there will be marshmallow roasting.

To celebrate the International Day of the Child, on Monday, November 20th, we invite all parents to school to see their child in action and to attend various workshops facilitated by our experts in education, your child’s teachers and leaders. Primary Halloween at UISZ
As a school, we are committed to developing the intercultural understanding of our students. One of the many ways we learn about different cultures is by recognizing and understanding the celebrations of our students from around the world. Halloween is a celebration that honors the incredible imagination of children. Halloween provides children with an opportunity to dress-up, pretend, and play. Halloween takes place on Tuesday October 31st and students are welcome to use their imaginations and dress-up in their favorite costumes! In the afternoon, during the last period of the school day, Primary students will join in a fun scavenger hunt with their classes.
A few notes for Halloween…
- Please consider if your child’s costume is appropriate for school.
- Students may not include weapons in their costumes (toy sword, toy gun, etc).
In the future, please reach out to Mrs. Yan if you have a cultural celebration to share with the school community. I look forward to learning from and with you about our culturally diverse community.

MYP 国际文凭中学课程 중등교육과정
We have reached the midpoint of our first semester. It has been one filled with new experiences and successes. As a new teacher and coordinator here in China, I had the opportunity last month to attend a three-day workshop for foreign teachers in China conducted by Guangzhou University. In addition to learning about Chinese customs associated with business and mannerisms such sitting for a meal at a round table, I took the opportunity to participate in a day-long session at a traditional kung fu academy. I even gave some of the exercises a try albeit I am uncoordinated. The highlight of the training was a visit to a Chinese government school where I taught a mini lesson on the International Day of Peace to a class of thirty Year 5 students. The students were very curious and eager to learn. Some spoke more fluent English than others, but we were all able to communicate with each other. At the conclusion of the lesson, the entire class lined up in front of me asking for my autograph. I was amazed at the warmth and hospitable welcome I received. In addition to learning more about Chinese culture, I learned that teaching and learning is universal, and the joy students get from an education is enriching no matter the cultural differences. I am looking forward to continuing my journey here at UISZ and experiencing more of the wonderful things that China has to offer.

It’s an exciting week for all DP students. Y12 students worked in groups for the Group 4 project, which is an interdisciplinary activity that is mandatory for all IBDP science students. After discussions, students came up with the theme for this year: ‘How does construction work influence the water quality in the community?’ Students collected water samples from the neighborhood community, analyzed the water data, brainstormed solutions on how to improve water quality, and presented amazing products with reflections. Y11 students also had a fantastic Week Without Walls (WWW) in Beijing, led by the CNH team and school teachers. WWW provides a tremendous opportunity for students to gain real-world experience and knowledge that cannot be taught in a classroom. Students experience cultures outside their community and appreciate the shared characteristics that unite us, helping them develop a deeper understanding of empathy and international mindedness.

For Y12, we started our study of the Cold War. We learned about the historical context of the Cold War era and its impact on the world. We discussed the emergence of the United States and the Soviet Union as superpowers after the end of World War II, as well as key events such as the Yalta and Potsdam Conferences.
We explore the concepts of capitalism and communism and how these ideologies influenced the policies and actions of the superpowers. Key figures such as Truman, Stalin, and Churchill are introduced. Also, students delved into early Cold War events, including the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan. They learned how these policies were used to contain the spread of communism and support the reconstruction of Europe. Case studies of countries that received Marshall Aid were examined.
For Y11, In this week, we explored the tumultuous period in China’s history, covering significant events and transformations. They gained an understanding of the weakened state of the late Qing Dynasty, the impact of foreign interference, and pivotal events such as the Hundred Days’ Reform and the Xinhai Revolution.
Also, the students You delved into the complex political landscape of the Republican era, including the Beiyang government, warlordism, and the cooperation and conflicts between the Nationalists and Communists. Key figures like Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai-shek were also examined.
