INTRO
We extend a heartfelt congratulations to our Year 5 students who successfully presented their Year 5 PYP Exhibition to the community on Wednesday, May 7. This remarkable presentation showcased the students’ learning and the in-depth exploration of the theme “Sharing the Planet.” A special thank you goes out to the teachers, parents, and mentors who dedicated their time and effort to support our students throughout this transformative learning journey.
In our secondary school, our DP2 and Year 10 students have continued to complete their exams. Additionally, our Year K3 to Year 10 students have successfully finished their MAP tests, which are now available on Managebac or have been sent home for sharing with parents. We have also commenced testing students in Years 1-10 for language proficiency using the WIDA assessment. The data collected from these assessments will enable us to reflect on student growth and identify areas of focus for instruction.
As part of our commitment to safety, we are engaging in emergency response drills to reinforce safety procedures. Currently, our drills are unannounced, enhancing our response time and allowing us to reflect on our practices. Last week, we successfully conducted an unannounced fire drill, with students evacuating the building in an orderly fashion. This week, we also addressed inclement weather and flooding adjustments at our lower campus. Our systems worked effectively, providing us with a valuable opportunity to refine our preparations for adverse weather conditions and ensure that all of our response processes are functioning properly.
We are excitedly looking forward to the Class of 2025 graduation ceremony on May 23rd, which will be held on-site. Our Year 9-11 students are invited to join us in this celebration.
The last month and a half of school will be filled with events, and we look forward to seeing parents and community members participating in the various activities that will take place. Thank you for your continued support!
PYP
Sustainable Projects in Early Years: Transforming Plastic into Planters
In our current unit on “Sharing the Planet,” we explored the specific needs of plants for thriving: water, sunshine, space, air, and nutrients from soil. This understanding sparked a sense of responsibility and care among the students for their garden. Our line of inquiry, “Understand that humans can help plants grow and positively impact their environment,” was our guiding principle that shaped our activities.
To take action on this learning, the children engaged in sustainable projects using materials that are often discarded—plastic bottles. With their small hands and developing artistic skills, they transformed these bottles into creative planters, showcasing their ability to innovate and repurpose. We also give credit to the Y2 class’s collaborative spirit for helping our little ones do base painting of the plastic planters.
The process began with the collection of Yakult bottles after snack time, supplemented by donations of plastic bottles from the school community. The students learned about the importance of reducing waste and how recycling can benefit the environment. Each child participated in transforming the bottles into vibrant planters, using their artistic skills to decorate them with paint and other materials. This not only enhanced the visual appeal of their planters but also fostered a sense of ownership and pride in their work.
As the students planted seedlings of various plants—such as tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and corn, along with other ornamental plants—in their newly created planters, they practiced care and responsibility. During the planting time, K3/Y1 class also came to help our early years plant. They were very supportive. Our early years students then ensured that their plants received the essential elements for growth. Each day, they checked on their plants, providing them with water and believing that singing to the plants would help them grow better! This hands-on experience allowed them to connect with nature while understanding the impact of their actions on the environment.
Through these sustainable projects, the children not only learned about the needs of plants but also discovered how they can actively contribute to a healthier planet and the importance of collaborating with their peers.
MYP
MYP science students are currently working on their summative assessment for designing an experiment. For Grade 7, students are tasked with creating their own experiments to test soundproof materials that can reduce noise levels in real-life scenarios, specifically related to constructing homes near airports.
In Grade 9, students are learning about ocean acidification and its impact on marine life. Their assignment is to design a laboratory experiment that simulates ocean acidity and explores its negative consequences on marine ecosystems, particularly focusing on coral reef barriers.
DP
Y12 Film coursework is now complete. Chan finished up a successful year by producing a seven minute short film entitled ‘Life in Rotation’. The logline for his film states: ‘The life of an office worker living through a monotonous and repetitive daily schedule who becomes increasingly cognitively detached from his experiences and loses his sense of time.’
Y12 English B have completed their classwork and are now in final preparations for their upcoming examinations. We spent the last few weeks with a strong focus on strategies for the types of listening questions they can encounter as well as revising the conventions needed for the text types they can possibly be asked to write.
Y11 English B is currently looking into a ‘Sharing the Planet’ unit where they are exploring how Britain’s colonial past impacts international relations in the present. As part of this work, they are exploring the disputed artefacts at the British Museum and the different views around what should happen next in relation to their ownership. They are also working on practicing their speaking internal process by making presentations. For Higher Level students this means creating a speech based on an extract from one of our novels. Standard Level students are using images to create a speech linked to themes from our learning.
HKDSE
This week, DSE students continued their English studies under the theme “Cultures Around the World.”
They focused on developing listening and note-taking skills, as well as reading and writing skills for DSE English Paper 3: Listening and Integrated Skills. They practiced matching pictures with spoken descriptions and writing captions. Additionally, they learned to identify the order of events and understand locations and directions through various listening exercises.
In terms of reading skills, students explored how to read itineraries and forum posts, honing their ability to extract relevant information. Furthermore, they learned how to write letters and emails of complaint, as well as how to respond to such correspondence.

幼儿园可持续发展项目： 将塑料瓶改造成花盆
在我们当前的 “共享地球 ”单元中，我们探讨了植物生长所需的具体条件：水、阳光、空间、空气和土壤中的养分。这一认识激发了学生对他们花园的责任感和关爱。我们的探究线索是 “了解人类如何帮助植物生长并对环境产生积极影响”，这是我们开展活动的指导原则。

国际文凭中学课程
MYP 科学课的同学们正全力投入在以“设计一个实验”为主题的总结性评估。对于七年级的同学而言，他们的任务是创建自己的实验，借此测试那些在现实生活中可以降噪的隔音材料，特别是与建造机场附近的住房有关的隔音材料。
在九年级，同学们正在学习海洋酸化以及这种现象对海洋生物所造成的冲击。他们要设计一个模拟海洋酸化的实验室实验，从而探索海洋酸化给海洋生态系统带来的负面影响，尤其是对珊瑚礁岩的影响。
国际文凭大学
预科课程
十二年级的电影课程已完结。Chan 以一部七分钟短片——《旋转人生》，为这一年的学习画上了圆满的句号。他的一句话简介讲述道：“一名上班族在单调重复的日常工作的生活中，他的认知越来越脱离自己的经历，并逐渐失去了时间感。”
十二年级英语 B 班的同学们已经完成了课业，现在正为即将到来的考试做最后冲刺。在刚过去的这几周，我们将注意力重点投入到了可能遇到的听力问题类型的策略，以及他们可能要写的作文类型所需的写作惯例。

유아 교육에서의 지속 가능한 프로젝트: 플라스틱을 화분으로 바꾸기
이번 ‘지구를 공유해요’단원에서는 식물이 성장하는 데 필요한 물, 햇빛, 공간, 공기, 토양의 영양분 등 구체적인 필요조건을 탐구했습니다. 이러한 이해를 바탕으로 학생들은 정원에 대한 책임감과 보살핌의 마음을 갖게 되었습니다. “인간이 식물의 성장을 돕고 환경에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 것을 이해한다”라는 탐구 원칙이 저희의 활동을 이끌어가는 기본 원칙이었습니다.
이 학습을 실천하기 위해 아이들은 흔히 버려지는 플라스틱 병을 활용한 지속 가능한 프로젝트에 참여했습니다. 작은 손과 발달된 예술적 기술로 페트병을 창의적인 화분으로 변신시켜 혁신과 재사용 능력을 보여주었습니다. 또한 플라스틱 화분의 밑그림 작업을 도와준 Y2 클래스의 공동 작업 정신도 돋보였습니다.

중등교육과정
