안녕하세요!!!
We entered to Year of the Dragon at UISZ last Monday, in the presence of six newcomers whom we welcomed with warmth. During the week, we also welcomed back our returning students and staff who are surely feeling that there is less time remaining in this academic year than time that have elapsed, but also weigh the amount of exciting and challenging tasks that are yet to accomplish.
The last four months of the year (yes! Only four!) will be filled with enduring learning and excitement!
周一，我们热热闹闹地迎来了六位新同学，迎接了回校的同学们和教职员工们，相信他们肯定会感觉到这学年已过一大半了，但同时也要权衡还有多少令人兴奋和具有挑战性的任务有待完成。

지난 월요일, UISZ는 여섯 명의 신입생들을 따뜻하게 맞이하며 용의 해를 시작했습니다. 이번 주에는 지나온 시간보다 앞으로 남은 시간이 더 짧다는 것을 느끼면서도 아직 성취해야 할 흥미진진하고 도전적인 과제가 많다고 생각하는 재학생과 교직원도 함께 돌아왔습니다.
올해의 마지막 4개월(네! 겨우 4개월!)은 끊임없는 배움과 설렘으로 가득할 것입니다!
Parents Workshops and New Campus visit
Please don’t miss the series of workshops that will take place this coming Thursday, February 29 at UISZ. These workshops will cover a wide area our school’s life, such as well-being, Writing, the school’s strategic plan, etc. Parents who will attend will, we hope, have a better grasp on what learning in the 21st century looks like, be in an optimal position to help their child, and posses the fundamentals of our IB and DSE frameworks.
It will culminate with a visit to the new campus. Definitely not to be missed!

The IB Learner Profiles

IB 학습자상
In K3/Y1 classes, similar to other IB programmes, our goal is to nurture learners who have respect for themselves, others, and the world they inhabit. To achieve this, we incorporate the IB learner profiles into all our learning activities, aiming to cultivate students who embody characteristics such as being inquirers, knowledgeable individuals, critical thinkers, effective communicators, principled decision-makers, open-minded individuals, caring members of society, willing risk-takers, balanced individuals, and reflective learners.

Each month throughout the school year, there is a specific emphasis on a particular learner profile. During the primary assemblies, our focus is on engaging in activities that can contribute to the development of this profile. For instance, this month’s emphasis is on achieving balance. During this week’s assembly, Mr. Koen guided the entire primary on how to achieve balance. He emphasized the importance of connecting our minds and bodies, highlighting that a strong body, especially a strong core, is essential for optimal learning. The learners then participated in exercises to prepare their minds for the buddy reading activity, which took place within their designated houses.

In order to deepen comprehension of individual learner profiles, our class engaged in various activities aimed at gaining a better understanding of these profiles. Some of the activities we participated in included role-playing, analyzing the characteristics of our profiles through pictures taken at the start of the school year, engaging in discussions, and reflecting daily on our behaviors. Subsequently, as a class, we composed detailed descriptions of each profile and created visual representations of them for our class display.

However, this journey does not conclude here. Mastering these profiles is an ongoing process. As emphasized by Mr. Koen, developing a strong foundation is not a singular event but necessitates consistent effort, ideally integrated into our daily routines. It is essential to reflect each day on ways to enhance our skills as learners.

MYP 国际文凭中学课程 중등교육과정
Next week in the MYP math department, students will explore the concepts of geometry and algebra, focusing on angles, shapes, and their properties. They will engage in hands-on activities to visualize geometric concepts and deepen their understanding of spatial relationships.
Through various activities and practice problems, students will improve and internalize their problem-solving skills and gain a deeper understanding of how algebra and geometry plays a crucial role in mathematics. By the end of the week, students will not only strengthen their mathematical skills but also developed a greater appreciation for the beauty and logic of mathematics and continue to explore the fascinating world of math!

DP 国际文凭大学预科课程 디플로마 과정
DP Year 11 students have now started the third unit in economics known as: Macroeconomics. A lot of learning and engagement has been taking place with students trying their hand at writing their Internal Assessment commentaries with the first one being on Microeconomics. The students are enjoying their learning and are eager and inquisitive at the same time. They are taking charge of their learning and I love to see this progress.
In Language and Literature, we have embarked on our second last literary text for the SL students. Students are enjoying and exploring the world of the Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Adichie and their literary outlook has improved greatly. They are enjoying the courses and learning at the same time, and I love to see it.
DP Year 12s are on the last leg of the of the last unit: Global Economics. They have recently completed their mocks and a lot of reflection is taking place on how they can be better at answering questions ahead of the exam. At this point, the students have submitted all their 3 IA commentaries and are in revision mode for the exam in May. They are getting ready to hand in their second internal assessment as we gear up to the last unit: The Global Economy. They are focused and pay attention to their learning and are involved in making sure they complete their tasks on time.
In Language and Literature, We have finished the study of our 4 texts and students are in revision mode as they revise their texts, the non literary texts too and practicing their paper 2 writing. The individual oral is also complete at this point and students are enjoying the courses and I love to see them grow in this journey.

HKDSE 香港中学文凭课程 홍콩 중등교육과정 프로그램
HKDSE Y1 Chemistry students are currently learning Fossil Fuels and Carbon Compounds. The use of fossil fuels has brought us benefits and convenience. Alongside, it poses environmental problems such as air pollution. The students were trying to suggest some measures for reducing the emission of air pollutants from the burning of fossil fuels. And then the students developed an understanding of the classification system of organic compounds. They will learn more about organic chemistry soon.
HKDSE Y2 Chemistry students are doing review process now. we focus our attention on course content for Paper 1 and paper 2. The students work diligently to prepare for their final Examination.

Dear Families,
Celebrations from the Week
Welcome back to all our new and returning boarders! We had a fantastic house meeting this week filled with energy and camaraderie. During the meeting, we welcomed our new boarders, discussed upcoming events like the Talent Show and the Boarding Birthday Braai (BBQ), and reminded students about assessments this term.
I also shared with the boarders the research-backed benefits of being a boarder. Boarding schools are known for focusing on character development and instilling strong values in students. In addition to academic achievement, we emphasize traits like integrity, resilience, compassion, and responsibility. We highlighted the key skills we work on daily in the boarding house, including self-management, communication, social skills, critical thinking, self-reliance, cultural awareness, problem-solving, and time management. These skills are essential in preparing our students for university and beyond.
I concluded the meeting by emphasizing our goal for all students to achieve their personal potential. We aim to support them in becoming the best versions of themselves, with the help of our diverse and experienced educators. Let’s learn from our mistakes and successes and work together to thrive.
