Greetings from UISZ!
We want to start by expressing our deep regrets for not being able to hold our much-awaited Community day today. After further thoughts though, considering the weather, we are somewhat relieved that we have deferred it again. However, as mentioned in yesterday’s message, if it rains again on September 15, only the Sports Day will be deferred and the rest of the activities (UPAZ meeting, Meet the Teachers , and UPAZ Barbecue, will take place.
We are looking forward to greeting the entire community on site, and we cannot wait any longer, beyond the 15.

ECA
ECA’s have started this week, and in all earnest, we are the first ones who wished we had improved it from last year. The good news is that we have splitted the ECA seasons in five, the current one ending October 30, and we are working diligently to offer an enhanced programme afterwards. We thank everyone who has given us ideas and suggestions.
Parents handbook
On Thursday, August 31st, all parents and students have received a copy of the 2023-2024 Parent-Student Handbook via email and ManageBac. We kindly request all parents to:
1. read/review the handbook
2. acknowledge its reception via the link provided in the email of the QR code.
Device Usage
You may be aware that several countries have adopted stricter control of students’ screen time, our host country being one of them. To help us achieve a reasonable amount of screen time in our student body, we have consequently come to the conclusion to restrict the use of devices that are not included in our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy. For example, mobile devices are not to be seen during school hours at school for all our students.
To help us achieve our goals, you are invited to complete a survey (QR code and link below) that will help us better monitor your child’s screen time. We thank you in advance for your esteemed collaboration. Please note that we will soon provide your child a safe place to store their non-BYOD device.

设备使用
如您所知，一些国家对学生的屏幕时间采取了更严格的控制，我们的东道国就是其中之一。
为了促进学生们使用屏幕的时间达到合理标准，因此，我们决定限制使用不包括在我们的自带设备政策(BYOD)中的设备。例如：我们所有的学生都不能在上课时间使用移动设备。

방과 후 활동
이번 주부터 본격적으로 ECA가 시작되면서 작년보다 개선되었으면 좋겠다는 의견이 가장 먼저 나왔습니다. 좋은 소식은 ECA 시즌을 5번으로 나누어 현재 시즌은 10월 30일에 종료되며, 그 이후에는 더욱 향상된 프로그램을 제공하기 위해 열심히 노력하고 있다는 것입니다. 아이디어와 제안을 주신 모든 분들께 감사드립니다.

At the beginning of the new school year, Year Two students have shown great enthusiasm in all learning areas. Especially in the 1st Unit of Inquiry “Who We Are”, Year 2s were looking into how people evaluate their health and well-being and make informed choices. Many questions came up in the discussion and students decided to find out the answers through interviews with three specialists in school- sports coaches, a PYP coordinator, and a science teacher about components of fitness, healthy diet, and living.
新学年伊始，二年级学生在各个学习领域都表现出了极大的热情。特别是在第一个调查单元“我们是谁”中，二年级学生研究了人们如何评估自己的健康和福祉，并做出明智的选择。
讨论中出现了许多问题，学生们决定通过采访学校的三位专家来找到答案——体育教练、PYP协调员和一位科学老师，以此来了解健身、健康饮食和生活的组成部分。
새 학년이 시작되면서 Year 2 학생들은 모든 배움의 영역에서 큰 열정을 보여주었습니다. 특히 첫 번째 탐구 단원 “우리는 누구인가”에서 2학년 학생들은 사람들이 자신의 건강과 웰빙을 평가하고 정보에 바탕을 둔 선택을 하는 방법에 대해 조사했습니다. 토론에서 많은 질문이 나왔고 학생들은 피트니스, 건강한 식단 및 생활의 구성 요소에 대해 학교 스포츠 코치, PYP 코디네이터 및 과학 교사 등 세 명의 전문가와의 인터뷰를 통해 답을 찾기로 했습니다.

The Year Six and Seven class are currently studying myths and legends. At the end of last week, this work focussed on mythical monsters and, in particular, the number of stories across cultures that feature sea monsters. The class has spent time this week writing diary entries imagining their ship has been attacked by a kraken. We will enjoy hearing these diaries on Friday.
The Year Eight and Nine students are reading Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card as part of an exploration into how science fiction writers use futuristic settings to explore modern issues. The class is currently learning about the role of character in a narrative and identifying dystopian elements as they engage with the text.
The Year Ten class has been exploring non-fiction texts through the lens of courage. This work is currently focussed on autobiographies and they have been developing their skills at identifying the elements of this genre. They have read extracts from autobiographies by astronaut Helen Sharman and education activist Malala Yousafzai and considered the courage shown in each account.

Year 12 DP (maths and physics) students commenced the new session by reviewing previous topics done in year 11 while the new year 11 DP students started with Numbers and Algebra. Year 12 DP maths students are currently learning statistics and probability. This is one of the most important topics which helps students to explore various aspects relating to their internal assessment (IA).
Year 12 DP physics students are currently working on capacitance of a capacitor simultaneously with their physics IA. The students were able to solve problems involving arrangement of capacitance, electric charges and energy stored in a capacitor as well as other terms in this content with applications to real life problems.

Keep an organized and logical system of information files/notebooks is one of the ATL skills that students could cultivate. Therefore, during the first week of school, each student of DSE 2 received their own Chinese language portfolio and five notebooks. These notebooks are used to take notes in class, accumulate words and sentences, record reading and writing theoretical knowledge, etc. In the following learning trip, the students studied Li Bai’s “Drinking Alone Under the Moon”, Du Fu’s “Climbing the Tower” and Li Qingzhao’s “Slow, slow tune”. The fine and rhythmic poems make everyone dream back to the Tang and Song dynasties. Through analyzing the romantic and elegant poem from Li Bai, the depressed poem from Du Fu and the natural and beautiful poem from Li Qingzhao, students have captured some beauty of Chinese classical literature.

因此，开学第一周，DSE 2的每位同学都领取了专属语文资料夹以及五个笔记本。这些笔记本分别用于做课堂笔记、积累好词佳句、记录阅读及写作理论知识等。
在随后的学习之旅中，同学们研读了李白的《月下独酌》、杜甫的《登楼》以及李清照的《声声慢·秋情》。
一句句凝练而有节奏的诗词，让大家飘飘然梦回唐宋时期。浪漫飘逸的李诗、沉郁顿挫的杜诗、清丽自然的漱玉词，皆让同学们领略到中国古典文学之美。
