Over the past few weeks our students in upper primary (Year 3, 4 and 5) have launched the Writer’s Workshop. Our young writers have started the year discussing what it is that makes them successful writers.
The Writer’s Workshop approach to teaching language is that we become better writers when we practice our skills in a real and authentic way. We know from research and experience that students become better writers when they have agency and choice in their writing projects. At the same time, we provide all our young authors with strategies and tools to become more independent writers. For instance, in class discussions so far this year, we have shared ideas of how brainstorming and a clear writing plan can help us take charge of a story and write with a clear purpose.
However, the most important teaching in Writer’s Workshop happens in our one-on-one conferences. During a conference, a student sits down with one of their teachers to discuss their writing. Our job as writing mentors is to suggest a valuable next step for our young writers that fits their personal needs. Feedback is the most helpful when it is tailored exactly to the needs of the individual student. Often, we look at examples from other writers: we hunt for ideas in published books and get inspiration from the writing projects of our fellow students. At other times, we brainstorm ideas together to find exciting new opportunities to improve our texts.

MYP English Language Acquisition
Students started the year getting familiar with the English vocabulary connected to family, house, personal identity, and ethnic identity. The units are tailored to accommodate the needs of different English levels and ages.
Year 6 has been learning about families, their roles, and the members they may include. Additionally, students have been studying a variety of house items and specific actions to support a better understanding and command of these terms. A blend of grammar, reading, writing, and listening skills have been addressed. Real-life situation videos have been provided to support vocabulary and conversations.
Students in upper levels have been focusing more on personal and ethnic identity. They identify the features that make them stand out and the common ground they may share with their schoolmates. Students evaluate the positive traits that built their individuality and what makes them Chinese, Korean, Japanese, etc. They look at the final fusion considering all the pieces that bring them joy and all they detest. As a result, they see themselves as a puzzle, with bits they can change and adapt to suit their needs, and bits that are permanent. They may see the freedom they have as young people to change aspects of their behaviour, to become better versions of themselves. They can consider growing into better friends, better athletes, better students, knowing that the strength to shrug off any inner challenge lies inside.

This week, IB diploma math students are fully immersed in their Math IA writing, with a particular focus on the assessment criteria. They are diligently working on formulating their Math ideas, collecting and analyzing data, and applying mathematical concepts to solve real-world problems.
Students are utilizing their knowledge of differentiation and integration to model and optimize various scenarios, such as finding the maximum area of a given shape or determining the rate of change in a dynamic system. They are also exploring the applications of calculus in fields like physics, economics, and engineering, further deepening their understanding of this fundamental branch of mathematics.
In addition to their Math IA work, students are also taking the time to review previously learned topics in Mathematics. This revision serves as a valuable opportunity to reinforce their understanding of concepts such as algebra, geometry, and statistics, ensuring a solid foundation for the more advanced mathematical concepts they will encounter in the IB diploma program. By revisiting these topics, students are able to refresh their knowledge, identify any areas of weakness, and seek clarification from their teachers, ultimately enhancing their overall mathematical proficiency. This comprehensive review not only aids in their current coursework but also prepares them for the upcoming challenges they will face in math courses and examinations.

This week, DSE11 and 12 students attended a seminar from University of British Columbia (UBC) to learn about the admission criteria and requirements of the university, so as to better understand the direction of study and prepare in advance. They were very active and taking notes about the schools they are interested in.
In the CSD class, Hailey from DSE 11 and her team members presented the materials they had collected around the theme of “The change of people’s lifestyle after the reform and opening up”. After that, other students rated the performance of the group and expressed their own suggestions and ideas. I am so glad that the whole class was very active in this activity, which all showed their ability to express themselves and cooperate with each other.
本周，DSE11和12年级的同学们聆听了英属哥伦比亚大学（UBC）的讲座，提前了解相关大学的录取标准以及要求，从而更加清晰自己的升学方向并提前做好准备。同学们对于自己感兴趣的学校，都有在积极地做着笔记。
在通识课上，DSE 11年级的Hailey 同学和她的组员围绕了主题——“改革开放后人们的生活方式的转变”向同学们展示了他们所收集到的资料。其他同学在听取后对该组同学的展示表现进行了评分，并且表达了自己的建议和想法。真高兴，整个班级在这次的活动中都表现得非常积极，这无不显示出他们的表达能力和相互协作的能力。
이번 주에 DSE11과 12 학생들은 브리티시 컬럼비아 대학교(UBC)의 세미나에 참석하여 대학의 입학 기준과 요구 사항에 대해 배우고 학습 방향을 더 잘 이해하고 미리 준비하기 위해 참석했습니다. 학생들은 관심 있는 학교에 대해 매우 적극적으로 메모하는 모습을 보였습니다.
CSD 수업에서는 DSE 11의 헤일리와 팀원들이 ‘개혁개방 이후 중국인의 생활양식 변화’를 주제로 그동안 수집한 자료들을 발표했습니다. 그 후 다른 학생들이 조의 성과를 평가하고 각자의 제안과 아이디어를 표현했습니다. 학급 전체가 이 활동에 매우 적극적이었고, 모두가 자신을 표현하고 서로 협력하는 능력을 보여줘서 기뻤습니다.
