We are slowly but surely heading towards our first school break of the year, and not too far from the end of term. Time flies by! Next week, the boarding staff invites all students from Year 3 and up to flexi-board and celebrate the Mid-Autumn festival. Book fast as space is limited!

To help us monitor the use of mobile phones at school, phone lock boxes have been install in the advisory classes of Year 6 to 10. Students are expected to store them at the beginning of the day and get them back as they leave the premises.

As mentioned during the last UPAZ meeting held last Friday, we have created WeChat Class groups for parents only. At the time of writing, Ms Yan Zhou and Ms Scarlett are the group owvers but as soon as a parent becomes the representative of the group chat, our two PA’s will transfer ownership and leave the groups.

This week, our Year 2, 4 & 5 class had the privilege of hosting a special guest, our beloved school counselor, who conducted an engaging workshop on Emotional Education.
During this captivating and enlightening session, our students had the opportunity to explore and connect with their emotions on a deeper level. The workshop not only equipped them with the knowledge of various emotions but also empowered them to recognize these emotions both within themselves and in others.
The workshop focussed on what emotions might look like on our faces, feel in our bodies and what thoughts go through our minds…
This workshop has opened a wonderful avenue for personal growth, allowing our students to embark on a journey of self-discovery while simultaneously forging stronger connections with their classmates.

MYP 国际文凭中学课程 중등교육과정
In our 5th week of the 2023-2024 school year, secondary is gearing up to hold Peace Day on September 21. Promoting peace in an assembly, mindfulness activities, Tai Chi, and practicing calligraphy and origami are just some of the experiences planned.
In grade 6 Math, students are collaborating to consider how to apply mathematical concepts to daily life. They have also been studying the historical evolution of number systems including Base 60 and Braille.
In Language Acquisition, grades 8, 9 and 10 students are continuing inquiries into the many layers of experience that comprise personal identity, and how it changes depending over time and in different contexts.
Individual and Societies is also delving into complex topics such how population demographics change over time. At UISZ, we take great pride in knowing that we are preparing students for an ever changing and complex world.

Students in the Theory of Knowledge class have been continuing to explore the core them of ‘Knowledge and the knower’. This past couple of classes we have been looking at the issue of truth in a post-truth world. How do we identify real news from fake news? To fully grasp the techniques of persuasion typically employed – students chose a fallacious statement such as ‘aliens previously visited the earth’ and had to create a social media influencer style video to try and convince viewers that the evidence presented was true. Chan and Cowen worked together and produced an excellent video with ‘professor Chan’ presenting photographic evidence of flying saucers. And Cowen providing a bogus eye-witness account of seeing one.

We recently organized a special event for parents. Meet the Parents and UPAZ BBQ aimed to strengthen the bond between the school, parents, and students while providing an opportunity for open communication, sharing important information, and fostering a sense of community.
During the Parents’ Meeting, school administrators, teachers, and staff shared important information about the school’s curriculum, policies, upcoming events, and academic expectations. Parents had the chance to ask questions, seek clarifications, and gain insights into their child’s educational journey. This open dialogue promotes a mutual understanding between parents and the school, further enhancing the support system for students.
UPAZ BBQ that followed the meeting served as a platform for parents, teachers, and administrators to interact in a relaxed and informal setting. It allowed everyone to connect on a personal level, fostering a strong sense of community and collaboration. Parents had the opportunity to socialize with each other, as well as with the educators who play a crucial role in their child’s development. These relationships built during the event contribute to a positive and inclusive school environment.
By creating a supportive and inclusive atmosphere, this event laid the foundation for a collaborative partnership that will positively impact the educational journey and well-being of our students. We look forward to hosting more events that bring our community closer together.

We are committed to enhancing the offerings in our evening boarding program to better support our students academically and personally. Currently, we are in the process of crafting a proposal to revamp our study lab sessions. In this endeavor, we eagerly await parent feedback gathered through a survey designed to improve the evening study lab sessions.
