April 17, 2026: Battle of the Books Competition – 3rd Place Winners!
UISG 커뮤니티 여러분,
A huge thank you to the parents who joined us for the Primary Open Morning and the Book Swap this week. It was a joy to see you in classrooms, sharing the love of reading. Your presence lifts our community.
Now, next week is a big one. All week long, our Atrium will pulse with student talent at the UISG Rockfest—please come listen and cheer. Monday brings a bittersweet milestone: our Grade 12 students mark their last day, with an assembly to cheer them on as they start the IB DP exams. We also welcome author Matt Beighton, and our MS Basketball team hosts AISG at 4pm.
Tuesday features a Hult Business School workshop for Grades 10 and 11, followed by the G11 Business Bonanza. Wednesday is Earth Day, and our Grade 5 and Grade 11 students will celebrate by going on a hike at Baiyun Mountain, and families are invited to the Fettes College & Uni Fair from 3:30 to 5pm.
On Thursday, don’t miss our Poetry Slam Assembly, while we also welcome prospective families to our Open Day in the Library. Friday wraps up with a Loughborough Design meeting for Grade 10 and the Middle School Dance in the afternoon.
It’s a full, beautiful week of music, milestones, and community. Thank you for showing up—to open mornings, book swaps, and the sidelines!

Battle of the Books!
We are thrilled to share the exciting results of this year’s Pearl River Delta Battle of the Books competition! Our UISG Book Wolves once again demonstrated their love for reading, teamwork, and school spirit across two days of lively literary competition.

Battle of the Books 독서 대회
Wednesday, April 15 – Our middle school and high school teams traveled to Tsinglan School in Dongguan to compete against other schools in the area. The middle school team finished strong in 3rd place! The high school team did not place, but they fought valiantly and showed tremendous dedication.
Thursday, April 16 – Two primary teams headed to ZWIE in Huangpu, where both teams finished in the top 10 out of 20 teams from the Guangzhou area. What an outstanding achievement!

The Pearl River Delta Battle of the Books is an exciting annual event that brings together students from various schools to showcase their reading prowess and teamwork skills. This year’s competition created a vibrant atmosphere filled with enthusiasm, friendly rivalry, and a shared love for literature. Our students not only tackled challenging questions based on the selected books but also made new friends and collaborated effectively with their teammates.

Hear from our young Book Worms:
- “This was my first time participating in the BOB, I was nervous and excited. After practicing, I became more confident, ready for the real competition. It was very fun and exciting, I enjoyed it very much!” - Rosie, G5
- “We did our best and worked as a team to communicate. It was fun!” - Mana, G5
- “It’s not about winning, it’s about the process.” - Elsa, G5

Participating in the Battle of the Books is more than just a competition—it’s an opportunity to develop critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills. The event also underscores our commitment to promoting literature and reading within our school community.
We are incredibly proud of all our teams for their hard work, dedication, and the wonderful spirit they brought to every match. Thank you to everyone who supported our UISG Book Worms, and we look forward to even more exciting reading adventures in the future!
Happy reading!

Parents Experience of Inquiry-Based
Learning at Our PYP Open House
On Thursday, parents stepped into the heart of what makes our Primary Years Programme special. Throughout the morning, families wandered through classrooms alive with hands-on learning, collaborative projects, and genuine curiosity. In one room, parents rolled up their sleeves to build 3D shapes alongside their children, discovering how geometry comes to life through play and exploration. Elsewhere, students guided their families through the exhibition process, exploring the concepts they will be investigating and the real-world connections they are uncovering.

The Open House wasn’t a performance—it was an authentic window into our everyday classroom culture. Parents witnessed firsthand the inquiry-based approach that drives our students’ learning: the questioning, the problem-solving, the collaboration, and the joy of discovery. Many left with a deeper appreciation for what happens behind classroom doors and a renewed understanding of how we nurture curious, capable learners.

For our PYP community, it was a powerful reminder that when parents see learning in action, they become true partners in their child’s educational journey. Happy learning—and thank you to all the families who joined us!
Books, Community, and Connection at the Book Swap

The morning air buzzed with excitement as parents, teachers, and staff gathered for our inaugural Book Swap event. With tables lined with beloved reads, hidden literary treasures, and dog-eared favorites ready for new homes, the community came together to celebrate the joy of reading. From thought-provoking memoirs to cozy mysteries, there was something for every taste and mood. The event wasn’t just about exchanging books—it was about sharing recommendations, rediscovering forgotten classics, and building connections over our shared love of stories. By the end of the morning, countless books had found their way into eager hands. We can’t wait to host a Book Swap again, with even more swapping happening.

UISG University Talk Series:KAIST & SKKU Recap
한국어 Uni Talk

This week, UISG hosted exclusive information sessions with two top Korean universities—KAIST and Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU). KAIST joined in a hybrid format, while SKKU made their first in-person visit to UISG after two previous virtual sessions. Both events drew engaged parents and students from Grades 10–12.
KAIST, Korea’s national flagship for science and technology, offers a unique no-department system (58% of students change majors), a P/NR grading system that encourages risk-taking, and a guaranteed Undergraduate Research Program. All incoming freshmen receive full scholarships, with funding continuing for those maintaining a GPA above 2.7.

SKKU, Korea’s oldest university (founded 1398) now backed by Samsung, is one of the country’s fastest-growing institutions. It offers cutting-edge majors in semiconductors, quantum information (home to Korea’s only Quantum Research Support Center), and biopharmaceuticals. Its X+AI initiative integrates AI into every field, and the Global Business program features dual degrees with Emlyon and IU Kelley.

Thank you to both universities for visiting—the only international school in Guangzhou hosting this Korean university series. Stay tuned for more!
