August 22, 2025: A Note of Thanks and a Look Ahead! 一则关于感谢与展望的信息
Dear UISZ Community,
As we close another vibrant week, I am filled with gratitude for the positive energy that continues to define our school. It has been wonderful to see our students so settled and engaged in their new routines, building strong connections with their teachers and peers. The UISZ Student Council led assembly was a great way to kick-off the year!
A special thank you to the many parents who joined us for last week’s Parent Coffee Morning. Your partnership is deeply valued, and we look forward to continuing the conversation at next week’s ‘Coffee with the Head of School‘.
I’m also excited to share that yesterday, I conducted a site visit to our new athletic facilities, which are currently in the full swing of completion. It was fantastic to see the progress being made. We will share more detailed updates and photos at next week’s meeting, but I can already say the future of athletics at UISZ is very bright!
This strong foundation of partnership and progress ensures we are poised for a fantastic year of learning and growth ahead.
Wishing you all a restful and joyful weekend.

Student Council Assembly – August 13, 2025
学生会集会-2025年8月13日

Karen Elaine Castro Rouanet
Head of Primary/ PYP Coordinator
Last week’s updates:
What a vibrant and inspiring week we’ve had in Primary! I’m delighted to share a glimpse into all the wonderful learning, leadership, and community spirit that has filled our halls.
We began the week with our ManageBac information session, and I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the parents who attended. Your engagement in understanding how to follow your child’s learning journey online is truly valued. I encourage everyone to log in regularly and explore the fantastic posts, photos, and student work being shared by our teachers.

This week also marked a special milestone: the inaugural meeting of our Primary Student Council. I was so proud to see these thoughtful student leaders come together with energy and purpose. They shared creative ideas for school assemblies, upcoming celebrations, and even offered meaningful feedback on their learning experiences. Their enthusiasm, empathy, and sense of responsibility remind us that student voice is a powerful force in shaping our school culture.

Our teachers also dove into their first Professional Development session of the year, focusing on the Writer’s Workshop model. Students are already writing stories, persuasive pieces, and reflective journals, don’t miss the wonderful examples on ManageBac!
We were also thrilled to welcome Ms. Maria to our August Nature Art Workshops. Originally from Portugal, Ms. Maria brings a wealth of experience in the IB PYP. Her passion for integrating art, nature, and inquiry was evident from day one. It was a joy to walk through the classrooms and see students creating, exploring, and making connections across subjects.

Week-Ahead:
At UISZ, we believe in building a strong, joyful school community, and we’re excited to launch two new monthly traditions that celebrate who we are:
School Spirit Days:
Each month, we’ll celebrate a fun and creative theme to bring our school family together. On August 27th, we’ll start our celebration with the theme Crazy Hair Day! Students, staff, and visiting parents are all invited to show off their wildest, most imaginative hairstyles. Expect pigtails with flair, rainbow wigs, and maybe even a spaghetti nest or two!

Monthly Learner Profile Student Awards:
We’re also launching our IB Learner Profile Awards to recognize students who consistently embody one of the IB attributes. Each teacher will observe and nominate one “Student of the Month” per class. These students will be honored with a certificate during our monthly PYP Assembly, and their stories will be shared in our newsletters and on social media.
If your child is selected, we’ll notify you in advance so you can join us for the celebration!

We’re so excited for the weeks ahead, full of curiosity, creativity, and connection. Thank you for your continued partnership in making UISZ a place where every child feels seen, supported, and inspired.
Warmly,
Ms. Karen

Ms. Karen

Dear UISZ Community,
A warm and enthusiastic welcome to the 2025–2026 academic year! It has been a joy to see our campus buzzing with energy as we begin this new chapter together. A special welcome to our boarding students who have returned to the Dragon House—you’ve brought its heart to life once again.
This year, we are proud to be home to a larger and more diverse community than ever, with a record number of new students joining us. This growth promises a dynamic, enriching environment where friendship, collaboration, and shared learning can thrive. We are excited to see the connections that will blossom throughout the year.
Our first week was dedicated to building a strong community foundation. Students dove eagerly into orientation and social activities—from friendly matches on the sports field to casual gatherings during the ECA block. It was inspiring to see new friendships form and existing bonds grow even stronger.
A few highlights to note:
· Core Sports Program: Our competitive teams began official training last Thursday. We wish all our athletes success as they develop their skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
· ECA Activities: Our extensive lineup of Extra-Curricular Activities will launch in September. We’re putting the final touches on a diverse range of clubs, arts, and special interest groups designed to inspire every passion and talent.
A detailed list of ECA offerings—including descriptions and sign-up instructions—will be shared with all students and parents soon. Please keep an eye on your inbox and our school communication platforms for updates.
Here’s to a year filled with learning, growth, and unforgettable moments together.
Warmly,

Dear MYP and DP Families,
We’ve had a busy start to the year with MYP and DP students meeting their new teachers and settling into their new classroom locations. We have a wonderful new group of staff members, and they are greatly enjoying getting to know our student groups.

Student leaders:
·School Captains: Anna Jung and Emily Kim
·Service Captain: Leo Park
·Art Captain: Jasmine Kim
·Sport Captain: Leo Gao
·Boarding Captains: Emily Hong and Jack Zhang
Our captains successfully ran the first combined Secondary assembly for the year. As part of this assembly, they organised an activity that resulted in IB and DSE staff and students getting involved and ended with the audience in fits of laughter as they watched. It was a great way for us to meet each other for the first time. We’ve also held two House meetings so far this year to maximise the time students have to get to know their DSE counterparts.

Class representatives:
Class representatives have been selected this week through elections in Advisory time. The student leaders, led by our School Captains Anna Jung and Emily Kim, held the first Student Council meeting this Wednesday. They are already hard at work, and we thank them for their diligence.
This year’s Secondary Class Representatives are:
Year 6: Isabella Zhang & Torry Tong
Year 7: Catherine Yang
Year 8: Chris Yun
Year 9: Rene Liu
Year 10: Annabelle Chen
DP1: Leo Deng
D10: Chloe Lin (林恩善)
D11: Cody Feng (冯俊霖)& Patrick Lai (赖俊企)
D12 Donald Fok (霍柏钧)& Cindy Lin (林芳瑜)

Staff:
We have a great combination of staff members this year. We have welcomed 10 new staff members, and they have been hard at work learning all the aspects of UISZ life. We also have 8 returning staff members who have been instrumental in helping with new staff orientation. Thank you.
On Monday, IB Secondary teachers met to learn more about the ManageBac changes that have happened over the summer. Teachers have been putting in a lot of work to get information correctly loaded onto ManageBac to help with home/school communication.
Ms Alya and Ms Lauren, the DP and MYP Coordinators respectively, have been impressed with the professionalism, positivity, and camaraderie of our staff. We have a great team this year, and we’re excited to see what we will achieve together.
Week ahead
Next weekend, a group of staff and students are headed to PACKMUN hosted by UISG. This Model United Nations conference will run from Friday the 29th to Sunday the 31st. It is the first MUN event of this school year. The UISZ MUN Secretary General, Year Eleven student Leo Park, is hard at work coordinating UISZ’s participation in this event.

This week is our first full week of timetabled classes. Students have been wholeheartedly involved in the learning experiences on offer. Every classroom I’ve visited this week has had student engagement on full display. I hope parents are proud of the diligent and principled way that the IB Secondary students have settled into a new year of learning.
Kind regards,
Ms Lauren Mackay
