Year 3 went on a top-secret field trip to see how a factory makes ceramic tiles. Ceramic tiles are all around us. We use them for countertops, floors and walls. We learned ceramic tiles can make a place look neat, beautiful or even glamorous. They also make it easy to keep a place clean by keeping dirt, bugs and water from getting into places we don’t want. We cannot tell you where we visited, but we can give you an idea about what we learned from our visit. We saw how the factory uses a system to make the coolest product for their customer.
First, they find out what their customer needs and they try to create a design that matches. Next, they use raw materials, a kiln and other machines to make the tiles. Finally, they finish the tile by printing the design on the surface. They can make tiles that have many different textures. Some can be rocky and others can be smooth. There are several steps in this process and many people are involved in constructing this useful material. We had an interesting trip.
