The idea for International Mother Tongue Day was first proposed by a group of secondary students who were inspired by service learning and wanted to make a positive contribution to the school community. Their vision was to create an event that would help others learn about languages and cultures beyond their own, encouraging curiosity, respect, and understanding. With the support of teachers, this idea grew into a whole-day learning experience for students across the secondary school.
During Periods 1–3, students worked in groups to research a country they were not familiar with. Guided by country expert teachers, they explored aspects such as language, traditions, geography, and daily life. Students then presented their learning through thoughtfully designed posters, demonstrating strong research skills and creativity.

In Periods 4–5, students shared their work with others through interactive presentations. These included scavenger hunts that encouraged active exploration, as well as Kahoot quizzes that tested knowledge in a fun and engaging way. By designing activities for their peers, students developed confidence as communicators and showed initiative in making learning enjoyable and accessible.

The final part of the day transformed the school into a lively cultural festival. Students and teachers took to the stage with performances including poetry readings, poetry slams, singing, and dancing in different languages. In addition, cultural booths were set up where students and staff shared traditional objects, games, food, and drinks from their cultures. Visitors were invited to try activities, ask questions, and experience cultures in hands-on and meaningful ways. All booths collectively raised over 3,500 RMB, which will be donated to charity.

Primary students and parents joined the celebrations during this final session, adding to the sense of community and shared learning. The event created a welcoming space where people of all ages could come together, learn from one another, and celebrate linguistic and cultural diversity.
Cultural Celebration

International Mother Tongue Day was a powerful example of students being open-minded, caring, and willing to take the lead in making a difference. We are extremely proud of the students who initiated and helped organise this event, and grateful to the teachers, parents, and wider community who supported and celebrated it with them.
