Weaving Our Dots Together:
Primary Students Build Community Through Fiber Art
Creativity and self-expression come alive through the unique marks and textures found in fiber art. This year, our Primary and Early Years students celebrated International Dot Day by connecting their individual marks using the traditional technique of weaving.

Through this hands-on experience, students not only learned the key skill of weaving but also explored how to apply this technique creatively to express their own ideas. They discovered that just like weaving brings threads together to create something beautiful, their dots symbolize how each person’s contribution strengthens our community.
Students made their mark in both large and small-scale fiber art pieces, thoughtfully designing their dots to celebrate connection and collaboration. These woven dots came together in a vibrant final display, embodying the PYP values of community, creativity, and respect.

The celebration extended beyond art-making with an engaging assembly. Students created large-scale dots filled with their own creative marks, forming a giant human weave that showcased their teamwork and collaboration skills—key elements of the IB Learner Profile attributes of being communicators, risk-takers, and caring.

Additionally, students played together with a parachute dot, enjoying cooperative games that encouraged them to be open-minded and balanced, fostering new friendships and joyful connections.

Dot Day reminded us all of the importance of making our mark—not just individually but as a connected and caring community.
A Tapestry of Points:
Secondary Students Create Masterpieces with Pointillism
Last week, the Secondary Atrium was transformed into a vibrant hub of creativity and collective spirit as students gathered to celebrate International Dot Day. This annual tradition, inspired by Peter H. Reynolds’ beloved book “The Dot,” serves as a powerful reminder that every one of us has the potential to make a mark on the world.

The event unfolded over two lively weeks, with the atrium regularly buzzing with activity. A curated playlist of fun, upbeat music provided the perfect soundtrack, keeping energy high and adding to the festive atmosphere as students dipped their brushes into bright pools of acrylic paint.
The artistic technique at the heart of the project was pointillism. This style involves creating an entire image out of many small, distinct dots of color. This method served as a powerful metaphor for our community. Just as each individual dot is vital to the complete painting, every student’s contribution was essential to the beauty and success of the final masterpiece. It was a true celebration of both art and teamwork.

When the paintings were complete, the judges faced a difficult task in evaluating the bursts of color, creativity, and technique displayed on each canvas. In the end, the Tigers roared to a first-place victory with a canvas that demonstrated exceptional teamwork and artistic execution. The Dragons soared into a well-earned second place, followed closely by the Pandas in third, and the Warriors in fourth. While the points have been tallied, the true victory belonged to the entire community. The Dot Day weeks reminded us all of the joy of creating something beautiful together.

The four canvases, now vibrant testaments to our students’ talent and collective spirit, stand as a lasting reminder of the day. They are a visual narrative of collaboration, a celebration of the courage to create, and a powerful affirmation that every single dot, and every single student, matters. We are immensely proud of all of our students for embracing the challenge and for making their mark in such a colorful and unforgettable way.
