The UISG DSE Program
1
School Background and Program Positioning
Against the backdrop of deepening educational integration within the Greater Bay Area, Utahloy International School Guangzhou (UISG) officially launched its Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) program in the fall semester of 2026. As a lakeside institution with nearly 30 years of experience in IB education, UISG has strategically introduced the DSE program.
Importantly, this program was not built from scratch. It represents the seamless transfer of a mature system developed over four years at UISZ (Utahloy International School Zengcheng), which has a proven track record across three graduating cohorts. This ensures that the UISG DSE program starts with validated teaching quality and demonstrable academic outcomes.
UISG is not only an IB Continuum School but also holds dual accreditation from the Council of International Schools (CIS)そして Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). This rigorous commitment to international educational quality standards is equally applied to the UISG DSE program.

Four-Year Curriculum: D9-D12
The UISG DSE program follows a complete four-year structure from D9 to D12, offering students a systematic and solid preparation pathway for the DSE exams.
| 学年 | Focus |
| D9(Preparatory Year) | Strengthen subject foundations, adapt to the DSE curriculum, enhance Chinese-English bilingual skills. |
| D10 | Systematic study of core and elective DSE subjects;completion of the curriculum framework. |
| D11 | In-depth mastery of exam points and test-taking strategies; phased mock exams. |
| D12(Final Sprint Year) | Comprehensive revision and exam preparation; official DSE examinations; concurrent university application guidance. |
This four-year structure provides ample time for knowledge accumulation, skill development, and exam technique refinement, avoiding the pressure and knowledge gaps associated with short-term cramming.

Outstanding Academic Results
Between 2022 and 2026, Utahloy International School Zengcheng (UISZ) produced three cohorts of DSE graduates, achieving exceptional results:
- 32% admission rate to the “Best Three” Hong Kong universities (HKU, CUHK, HKUST)
- 70% admission rate to the top eight Hong Kong universities
- 74% pass rate in Chinese Language; 65% pass rate in English Language
- 35%of students achieved a Grade 5 or above in Mathematics
- 60% of students achieved a Grade 5 or above in their elective subjects
These figures strongly attest to the teaching quality and college counselling effectiveness of the Utahloy DSE program.
In 2026, Utahloy proudly presented 37 outstanding DSE graduates. Building on the proven success of the previous three cohorts, this year’s students achieved even greater results, continuing Utahloy’s proud tradition of excellence.

Strong Teaching and Research Capabilities
UISG has a robust teaching and research team that has developed original DSE preparation materials, now officially in use:
- Classical Chinese Review Notes & Practice Questions
- 30 Days to Master DSE Mathematics – Paper I
- 30 Days to Master DSE Mathematics – Paper II
- 30 Days to Master DSE Economics – Microeconomics
- Pre-DSE Mathematics Essentials
- Master HKDSE Paper 3: Contextual Vocabulary for Listening
These teaching materials comprehensively cover the core exam points of the DSE and are deeply integrated into the school’s own teaching plan and pedagogical model. They help every cohort of exam candidates review efficiently and focus their efforts precisely during the preparation phase, enabling them to perform with confidence in the examinations, achieve outstanding results, and successfully “grasp the stars.”
5
Top-Tier Faculty
The teaching team is the soul of any program’s quality. 95% of teachers in the UISG DSE program hold a Master’s degree or higher from leading overseas universities. Crucially, they have an average of over 6 years of frontline teaching experience, and many are themselves 5**achievers on the DSE exams. They are not just knowledge transmitters but strategic exam preparation experts.

6
Bilingual Immersion Environment & Holistic Activity Platform
At UISG, the DSE program’s “bilingual immersion” extends from the classroom into ECAs, inter-school competitions, and sports. Whether in debates, MUN, football leagues, or drama, English is the primary language of communication — enabling students to naturally strengthen their English skills through real collaboration and competition. UISG believes language thrives on use. In this immersive English-rich environment, every DSE student grows beyond the classroom, ready to ace their exams and confidently embrace the world.

7
Integration of IB and DSE Philosophies
The UISG DSE program is not a simple exam-drilling course. It integrates the IB’s PBL philosophy into subject teaching. Each subject is driven by short or long-term goals, and teachers work backwards to identify daily tasks and content, creating a clear, efficient learning path. This “begin with the end in mind” approach keeps students focused, helps them understand and apply knowledge through real tasks, and achieve learning goals with maximum efficiency.
8
Small Class Sizes
UISG adheres to small class sizes of no more than 20 students per class, with a teacher-student ratio of approximately 1:6. This ensures that every student receives personalized attention and precise instructional guidance.

A Comprehensive Guide to the HKDSE
10
What is HKDSE?
The Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE or DSE) is a university entrance selection exam officially introduced by the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government in 2012. Widely known as the “Hong Kong University Entrance Exam,” it serves as the primary pathway for local Hong Kong students to enter university.
The DSE exam is held annually from March to May. It is open to candidates regardless of nationality, meaning students who do not hold Hong Kong residency can also register for the DSE exam.
11
International Recognition of the DSE
The international recognition of the DSE is steadily increasing, making it a truly “global” university entrance exam. With DSE results, students can apply to:
- Hong Kong Local Universities: Including the eight major institutions, such as HKU, CUHK, and HKUST.
- Mainland Chinese Universities:Over 165 mainland universities accept DSE results for exemption from the national college entrance exam (Gaokao).
- Overseas Prestigious Universities:Top universities in the UK, Australia, Canada, Singapore, and other countries recognize DSE results.
12
Detailed DSE Curriculum Structure
The DSE curriculum consists of Core Subjects と Elective Subject生徒会の目的:. All candidates must take the following four core subjects. In addition to the four core subjects, students typically choose2 to 3elective subjects based on their interests and future academic pathways. Electives are divided into Categories A, B, and C, with Category A covering 19 subjects across 7 different fields.
| Core Subjects | Elective Subjects | |
| 中国語 | STEM | Humanities &Business |
| 英語 | 物理学 | 経済学 |
| 算数・数学 | 化学 | 歴史 |
| Citizenship &Social Development | Mathematics Extension I/II | Tourism &Hospitality Studies |

It is worth noting that the DSE breaks down traditional arts/science subject divisions. Students can choose combinations that suit their interests and future directions, allowing them to explore diverse fields during their senior secondary years.
13
Scoring Mechanism
The DSE uses a “grade point” system, grading subjects on a scale from 1 to 5** (with 5** being the highest). The approximate conversion is as follows:
| Level | Approximate Points | Description |
| 5** | ~7 | Highest Level |
| 5* | ~6 | Highest Level |
| 5 | 5 | Excellent |
| 4 | 4 | Good |
| 3 | 3 | Satisfactory |
| 2 | 2 | Basic Attainment |
| 1 | 1 | Unsatisfactory |
Universities usually calculate admission scores based on a candidate’s best 5 or best 6subjects. Some competitive programs at top universities may have specific subject requirements or higher grade expectations.
14
Unique Advantages of the DSE
- Bilingual Exam AdvantageOne of the most distinctive features of the DSE is its bilingual exam setting. Except for the English Language paper (which must be answered in English), students can choose to answer all other subjects in either Chinese or English. The language used is not indicated on the transcript, so answering in Chinese does not affect the score or reduce a student’s chances of university admission. This flexibility is excellent news for students whose English proficiency is not yet top-tier but who have strengths in other subjects. It allows their true academic abilities to be fully demonstrated, not hindered by language barriers.
- Rising International RecognitionThe international recognition of DSE qualifications has been rising consistently in recent years. Besides traditional English-speaking destinations like the UK, Australia, and Canada, DSE results are now recognized by top universities in non-English speaking countries such as Germany and France, offering DSE candidates a broader and more diverse range of higher education options.
- Lower Difficulty in STEM Compared to GaokaoFor students who have progressed through the Mainland Chinese education system, transitioning to the DSE pathway often provides a distinct advantage in Mathematics and STEM subjects. The difficulty level of the compulsory part of DSE Mathematics is roughly equivalent to Chinese Grade 10-11 (senior high year 1-2) levels. This makes it easier for students strong in math to achieve high scores on the DSE
- Fewer Exam Takers
| Comparison | DSE | Gaokao |
| AnnualCandidates | ~50,000 | Over 10 million |
| Admission Rateto Top Tier | ~20% to HK’s top 3 | Under 2% to 985 Project universities |
| Pathways | HK, Mainland of China, Overseas | Primarily Mainlanduniversities |
| Competition Pool | Mainly Hong Kong students | All national candidates |
The pressure of competition is significantly lower for the DSE compared to the Gaokao. The number of DSE candidates is approximately 1/270th of the number of Gaokao candidates. This means on the DSE pathway, students face dramatically lower competition levels and significantly higher chances of entering prestigious universities. With the same level of effort, the DSE pathway often yields better university placement results.

Boarding Program
To support the needs of the secondary section, UISG has launched a brand-new boarding program, providing a safe and caring residential environment, operated under a management system accredited by the Australian Boarding Schools Association (ABSA).

The UISG DSE program is ideal for families who value both the academic rigor of the Hong Kong DSE and the atmosphere of an international school campus.
Here, students can systematically prepare for the DSE over a complete four-year G9-G12 period, relying on the school’s self-developed teaching resources and top-tier faculty team to strive for their ideal universities. Utahloy has already demonstrated its academic strength with a 32% admission rate to Hong Kong’s top three universities.
More importantly, at UISG, students not only prepare for Hong Kong and overseas universities via the DSE but also grow into bilingual, globally competent individuals nurtured by the school’s deep IB educational foundation and multicultural environment. Whether choosing further studies in Hong Kong, Mainland of China, or abroad, the UISG DSE program paves a global pathway to higher education.
