At the time of writing these lines, the UISZ students-created and UISZ students-led U2NESCO is taking place. It was absolutely lovely to see our students all dressed up for the event, ready to debate and exchange vision of the countries they represented. Thank you to the organizing committee and all the delegates for engaging in such crucial discussions.

In my I&S class year 7 students are developing contemporary solutions to the historical problems that colonialism and imperialism brought to Africa, such as loss of self-sufficiency in agriculture. They are following a process using 6 critical thinking actions, moving from surface learning to deep learning and finally to “hyperlearning” where they create a new whole or system using existing parts or elements.
在我的I&S班，七年级的同学们正在为殖民主义和帝国主义给非洲带来的历史问题制定当代解决方案，比如说丧失农业自给自足能力的问题。在这个过程中，同学们通过遵循批判性思维行动的六个步骤，从表面学习到深度学习，最后到 “超级学习”，利用现有的部分或者元素，去创造一个新的整体或系统。

Recently, in Chinese language and literature class, Year 12 DP students are busy preparing for Paper 2. In this paper, candidate is required to write a comparative essay to reply to a question, based on two literary works studied in the course. Candidates can only write qualified papers if they are familiar enough with these literary works. Therefore, this week, the students reviewed four literary works including Shu Ting’s Poems. They retrospected many factors which have affected the author’s composition. For instance, the characteristics of the certain society and author’s experience. They also summarized the literary genre and unique literary style of each writer, and then discussed the similarities and differences between these four authors. Just as the ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Zi said, a nine-storied terrace must be built upon its lowly base. Only with a solid foundation can one get high scores in the exam. I look forward to the continuous improvement of our candidates!

The biography of Lian Po and Lin Xiangru is a famous article In Shi ji (or Records of the Grand Historian) . This ancient article was composed of many stories, such as returning to Zhao with perfect jade, the meeting in Mianchi and beg for apology humbly. This week, year 11 DSE students studied this article in their Chinese language class. After translated this article into modern Mandarin, the students divided into three groups. They adapted the three stories into dramas and performed in class. The students integrated contemporary elements, such as Internet phrases, into their performance, which made this ancient prose more interesting. After the performance, students used the thinking tool CEC (connect, extend and challenge) to reflect. Many students said, they never knew that this ancient article was so attractive. It looks long, but the plot is simple. During the performance, they also experienced the emotions and situations of the characters. Also, they found that Qian Sima’s diction was truly refined and vivid.
《廉颇蔺相如列传》是《史记》中的经典篇章。该文由“完璧归赵”“渑池之会”“负荆请罪”等多则故事组成。本周，在中国语文课堂中，DSE一年级的同学们研习了这篇文章。在疏通了文章大意后，同学们分成三个小组，分别将这三个故事改编成话剧，并在课堂上表演。同学们将网络语言等当代元素融入话剧表演中，令这篇古文焕发出别样的光彩。表演结束后，同学们运用“联系，延伸，挑战”这一思维工具进行反思。很多同学谈到：原来这篇古文是如此有趣。它看似篇幅很长，但故事情节却很简单。而在表演中，他们也切身体会了文中人物的情感和处境，也因此发现了司马迁的措辞是如此精炼且生动。
롄포와 린샹루의 전기는 유명한 작품이자 대 역사가의 기록인 사기(史記)에 수록되어 있습니다. 이 고전 문학 작품은 완벽한 옥을 가지고 조나라로 돌아가는 것, 몐치에서 만나는 것, 겸손하게 사과를 구하는 것 등 많은 이야기로 구성되었습니다. 이번 주 11학년 DSE 학생들은 중국어 수업에서 이 텍스트를 공부했습니다. 학생들은 이 텍스트를 현대 중국어로 번역한 후 세 그룹으로 나뉘었습니다. 학생들은 세 가지 이야기를 드라마로 각색하여 수업 시간에 공연을 했습니다. 학생들은 인터넷 문구와 같은 현대적인 요소를 공연에 통합하여 이 고전 문학 작품을 더욱 흥미롭게 만들었습니다. 공연이 끝난 후 학생들은 사고 도구인 CEC(연결, 확장, 도전)를 사용하여 성찰하는 시간을 가졌습니다. 많은 학생들이 이 고전문학이 이렇게 매력적인지 몰랐다고 말했습니다. 작품을 그냥 보기에는 길어 보이지만 줄거리는 간단합니다. 공연하는 동안 학생들은 등장인물의 감정과 상황도 공감하며 느낄 수 있었습니다. 그러면서 첸 사마의 어휘 사용이 정말 세련되고 생생하다는 것을 알게 되었습니다.
