My name is Karen Castro. Born and raised in Guatemala City.
I have been teaching for over 10 years and absolutely love it!
I began teaching in Guatemala, receiving my Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education – Learning Disabilities from Universidad del Valle.
As we teachers are lifelong learners, I decided to continue studying different certificates, including the IB PYP certificate, and the Early Years Leadership from Harvard Graduate School of Education. Currently, I’m studying for an M.Ed. in Technology Applied to Education from the Universidad de la Rioja.
My teaching journey has taken me to amazing places like Brazil, Myanmar, and Wisconsin. Each experience has taught me so much about different cultures, teaching methods, and most importantly, how to connect with my students.
In my classroom, I strive to create a warm and welcoming environment where every student feels valued and respected. I encourage my students to embrace their uniqueness and celebrate diversity.
Outside the classroom, I enjoy traveling, reading, trying new foods, and spending quality time with my family and friends.

Scott Gibson
MYP Coordinator
I am from Dallas, Texas and have worked both stateside and internationally for over ten years. I am in my tenth year teaching internationally in Recife, Brazil at the American School of Recife along with a lengthy career spent in the Middle East in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman. I have a Bachelor of Arts in History from Texas Tech University and a M.S. in Educational Leadership from Palm Beach Atlantic University.
I will be joining UISZ as the MYP Coordinator and humanities teacher. My wife Elizabeth is also joining the UISZ community as a PYP teacher. We have one child, a three year old named Sophie who was born overseas in Oman. We are excited for her to have the opportunity to learn another language
I have coached basketball, American football, and boys track and field. I have also worked with Model United Nations and have helped out with service learning projects. In my spare time, I enjoy reading (almost any topic), watching sports, taking my daughter to the park, swimming at the beach, running, and traveling. I am looking forward to meeting everyone in person.

Elizabeth Mulvey
Year 4 homeroom Teacher
My name is Elizabeth and I am originally from Ireland. I have been working internationally for eighteen years in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Brazil.
I have a B.A. in English and Music, a Higher Diploma in Music Technology and a PGCE in Primary Education. We have worked in American curriculum schools with common core and AERO and IB schools in Saudi Arabia and Oman. I have taught first grade, second grade, third grade and been a Music teacher for kindergarten to seventh grade. My passion is in inquiry based learning so I am looking forward to getting back to an IB school.
My hobbies are music, reading and tennis. We have a three year old daughter, Sophie, who will be joining the school. My husband will be working as the MYP coordinator. We are looking forward to experiencing the Chinese culture and learning a new language.

K3-Year 1 Homeroom Teacher
Hi, everyone!
Working with young children has always been my passion. I’ve been doing it for eleven years; I can’t imagine being in another field! I took a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education degree at the Philippine Normal University. Since then, I’ve been teaching preschool and lower primary levels in our home country. Presently, I am finishing my thesis to earn my Master’s in educational management.
Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to teach using the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IBPYP) framework. It has been a tremendously fulfilling experience since it has enabled me to inspire my kids to cultivate their critical thinking abilities, interact with their environment, and become global citizens. Aside from teaching, I also had the chance to learn more about the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP), as I was assigned to be the coordinator of the said external test in my previous school.
I like discovering new interests and hobbies in my free time. I enjoy singing, dancing, and sampling foods from around the world. Additionally, I have a young son who is always eager to explore new places, so we enjoy riding trains and visiting foreign locations together.
I am grateful to be joining UISZ. I look forward to learning more and experiencing teaching in a whole new environment!

Tara O’Brien
Head of Primary and PYP Coordinator
I’m originally from a small town outside of San Francisco and have worked in international education for the past 15 years. I’ve taught and served in administrative positions at international schools in Budapest (Hungary), Doha (Qatar), and Lausanne (Switzerland). My teaching and administrative experience is in Early Childhood and Primary education and I greatly enjoy curriculum development and PD design.
I am passionate about all things education and am constantly on the lookout for programs to expand my knowledge-base. After giving birth to our second child, Amelie, I began my doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction, with a focus on school leadership. I find it rewarding to take intentional steps towards achieving a long-term goal.
My other hobbies include travel, martial arts, basketball, learning about emergent technology, arts and crafts.
Looking forward to meeting you all soon and getting to know our new community.

Koen Vanhoutte
Year 5 Homeroom Teacher
Hi everyone,
After a long stint, growing up in Belgium, I lived in Budapest, Doha and Lausanne. Now I am excited to stray further afield and make Zengcheng my home, joining the Year 5 students at UISZ on their learning journey.
I have been an educator for a decade and a half. I taught a wide range of age groups, in three different international schools and one university in three different countries. I have fulfilled many teaching roles during this time, ranging from substitute teacher and teaching assistant to course developer and one-on-one special educational needs teacher. In recent years I have come into my own as a committed PYP Primary Homeroom teacher, first in early years at GEMS in Switzerland and then in upper primary at the International School of Lausanne.
In my own time, I love playing with my two little rascals, Amelie and Elise. We love a good playground as well as making music, building and drawing. My partner Tara and l relish sitting down for a good show or inviting friends over for a night of board games and chats. I also enjoy cooking and eating, learning about food, and taking a stroll with a good podcast in my ears.

Nicholas Heymans
Head of Boarding
Originally from South Africa, I have spent over ten years working in boarding schools worldwide including South Africa, Russia, and most recently in Berlin. During this time, I have successfully led teams in running boarding programs, headed the ICT and Technology department, and served as a master in charge of Hockey. My experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and cultures has instilled in me a passion for creating positive learning environments. I am thrilled to bring my expertise to UISZ and collaborate with you all to achieve our goals.
In terms of my educational background, I hold a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of South Africa. I am currently studying for my Master of Education in Advanced Teaching (IB). I have taught various subjects, including ICT, English, and History, and have been involved in extracurricular activities such as sports coaching and leading outdoor education programs. Outside of work, I enjoy exploring new cultures, watching and playing sports, and hiking.
I am joining the team alongside my wonderful wife, Lindsey, and we are excited to meet the team and get to know the UISZ community. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Lindsey Walsh
Counselor and Wellbeing Coordinator
I’m Lindsey Walsh, the incoming School Counselor and Deputy Head of Boarding. I am an experienced counselor and Boarding practitioner with nearly seven years of experience in boarding. I specialize in creating a home life atmosphere in all boarding houses I work in, and I strongly believe in the principles of positive education and solutions-focused practice.
I am currently undertaking a Master of Science in Psychology from Liverpool University. I hold a Masters’s Degree in Anthropology and Environmental Sciences (graduated Cum Laude) and an Honours Degree in Psychology from Rhodes University. I also earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology (graduated Cum Laude) from the University of South Africa. I work in Berlin, Germany, providing socio-emotional support and academic mentoring to MYP and IB students aged 14 – 19. I am also a Cross Country and Basketball Coach. Before that, I worked at Letovo School in Moscow, providing pastoral and well-being training to the boarding staff and serving on the well-being committee. Before that, I was a House Parent in South Africa. I also have experience as a psychiatric support volunteer at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital.
In my personal life, I am married to Nicholas Heymans, an experienced boarding practitioner with ten years of boarding experience. I love the outdoors, and running is my favorite hobby.
We are so excited to join the team at UISZ and can’t wait to meet everyone in person.

저는 현재 Liverpool University에서 심리학 석사 과정을 밟고 있습니다. 또한 Rhodes University에서 인류학 및 환경과학 석사 학위(우등 졸업)와 심리학 우등 학위를 받았습니다. 또한 남아프리카 대학교에서 심리학 학사 학위(우등 졸업)를 취득했습니다. 저는 독일 베를린에서 14~19세의 MYP 및 IB 학생들에게 사회 정서적 지원과 학업 멘토링을 제공했습니다. 또한 크로스 컨트리 및 농구 코치이기도 합니다. 그 전에는 모스크바의 레토보 학교에서 기숙사 직원들에게 사목 및 복지 교육을 진행하고 복지위원회에서 활동했습니다. 그 전에는 남아프리카공화국에서 가정교사로 일했습니다. 또한 발켄베르크 정신병원에서 정신과 지원 자원봉사자로 일한 경험도 있습니다.

English Language and Literature
I’m from Aotearoa/New Zealand and have also lived in France and America. My move to Zengcheng will be my first time working in an international school. I’m looking forward to utilising the IB curriculum and teaching secondary English at UISZ.
For the last seven years I have been working at a New Zealand state secondary school in Dunedin – one of UNESCO’s Cities of Literature. I teach English and run the Drama department at my current school. My extracurriculars include coordinating a sustainability group, leading outdoor education camps, and providing a myriad of performing arts activities. I value creating opportunities for students to work collaboratively and gain confidence both on and off a stage.
Hiking, reading, theatre, and writing are my favourite ways to relax. When indoors, I’m typically found with a cup of tea in hand and a book somewhere nearby. I am always seeking out opportunities to expand my own learning. Aside from English, I also have qualifications in Classical Studies, History, Public Speaking, and Drama. My postgraduate work has focussed on Educational Leadership and Digital & Collaborative Learning. I appreciate the role of education in our lives and am looking forward to joining the UISZ school community.

除了英语之外，我还拥有古典研究、历史、公共演讲和戏剧方面的资格。我的研究生工作主要集中在教育领导力、数字及协作学习方面。
对于教育在我们生活中的作用，我深以为然， 也深深期待加入UISZ社区。
저는 아오테아로아/뉴질랜드 출신이며 프랑스와 미국에서도 생활한 경험이 있습니다. 국제 학교에서 근무하는 것은 이번이 처음입니다. UISZ에서 IB 커리큘럼을 활용하여 중고등학교 영어를 가르치게 되어 매우 기대가 됩니다.

Maths Teacher
My name is Patrick. I come from Kenya, a beautiful country with stunning white sand beaches and expansive wildlife parks and reserves.
I have over 14 years teaching experience in Mathematics for both IB DP and A level and I had the pleasure to teacher Math AA to UISZ students last year. This year, I was thrilled to once again teach Math AA to Year 11 and 12 and IBMYP Math to our Year 10.
It will be an immense pleasure for me to join the UISZ faculty on site and enjoy the community living happening at this wonderful school.
I am looking forward to meeting you all in person in August.
