At UISG, parents play a vital role in their child’s education, and the school recognises the importance of involving them in various activities and workshops. One such workshop recently held at UISG aimed to engage parents as students and introduce them to the concept of visible thinking routines.
Visible thinking routines are practical, easy-to-use strategies that promote critical thinking, enhance understanding, and encourage classroom participation. By making thinking visible, students can develop deeper insights, solve problems creatively, and communicate their thoughts effectively.
The workshop, facilitated by Ms. Jai Roa and Ms. Joanne Avendano, began with a brief introduction to visible thinking routines and their benefits in the learning process. Parents were intrigued by the idea of being able to witness their child’s thinking process and actively contribute to their growth and development.
To highlight the impact of visible thinking routines, participants were divided into small groups, and each group was given a scenario or problem to analyse using a specific routine. The routines included “Colour, Symbol, and Image”, “Think, Pair, Share,” and “Step Inside.” These routines prompted participants to observe, question, and investigate different aspects of the scenario, stimulating their critical thinking skills. As the parents engaged in the activities, they realised the importance of listening, respectful communication, and collaborative problem solving.
Overall, the visible thinking routine workshop at UISG provided parents with a valuable opportunity to step into their child’s shoes and engage in activities that foster critical thinking and open communication. By understanding the importance of making thinking visible, parents can support their child’s educational journey more effectively, contributing to their success in school and beyond.
