The Middle Years Programme at UISG

“Building a solid academic foundation, the MYP develops students’ confidence in managing their own learning and making connections between their learning in the classroom and the real world.”
(The International Baccalaureate (IB) https://ibo.org/)
At UISG, we provide the best possible education for our students. The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), for students aged 11 to 16, is designed as an inclusive programme that links clearly with our Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP). The MYP is at the forefront of education because it includes:
- rigorous learning objectives
- a student-centred approach to teaching
- international perspectives
- Holistic development of the learner
- sustained teaching and learning in more than one language
- a focus on learning how to learn
- the development of 21st century skills
MYP students at UISG study eight subject groups including English, Mathematics, Science, Individuals and Societies, Design, Visual Arts, Physical and Health Education, and usually two further languages. Languages are highly regarded in our school and their development is actively encouraged. UISG is renowned within the international educational community as having one of the best mother tongue programmes, offering seven different languages.

UISG is also one of the few schools in Guangzhou to do the MYP eAssessments. These assessments provide external evaluation for students in Year 10 (15–16 years old) and lead to the internationally recognised IB MYP Certificate. To complement the highest standards of education, taught by highly qualified staff, there is a very strong community, action and service commitment at UISG. This helps our students to apply their knowledge in wider settings. We provide opportunities for volunteer and charity work, local and overseas study tours, and membership for internationally recognized clubs.
At UISG, we promote the transfer of information conceptually so that information can be used from subject to subject, as well as the appropriate processing any information, specifically, in individual subject areas. This enables our students to become more proficient in new and challenging circumstances, inside and outside of school. The students are able to demonstrate this in the Year Group Camps and Service and Action projects they are involved in.
Skill development, in tandem with building knowledge, is the key to learning in the MYP as this prepares students better for an ever-changing world. Essential skills are integral to our curriculum and include the ability to research, manage time, work in and with a variety of media and extend their communication skills. Integrating Action and Service into our daily school activities shows that UISG students can contribute positively to our community. Our students are able to apply, practise and develop their skills and knowledge. We have many leading examples of student-led Action and Service activities that include: Utahfresh, Pinktober Foundation HongKong and Huilin School for Disabled Children.
Our students are supporting those less fortunate in the local and global communities. At UISG, the MYP is part of an educational continuum that emphasises concepts, ideas and issues that cross disciplinary, cultural, national and geographical boundaries. Within a coherent, comprehensive curriculum framework, the MYP provides academic challenge and encourages development of life skills on which students rely throughout the course of independent, purpose-driven lives.
