For the second week of the event (May 3-10, 2023), you are welcome to appreciate the following works from secondary school’s End of Year Arts & Design Exhibition which was held in the atrium of secondary building.
Year 7I & 7S MYP Visual Arts. Basic Skills & Visual Understanding
The unit begins with a quick review of the history of image-making. This unit integrates technical and conceptual knowledge of illustration in the visual arts. We then analyze the use of perspective in artwork, specifically whether or not perspective is essential to making an artwork. After that, students investigated their cultural backgrounds and created artwork to reflect them.
Y10 MYP Design ePortfolio
The year 10 design Eportfolio requires students to use knowledge of design concepts and skills developed from years 7 – 10 to complete the MYP design cycle. The maximum page limit is 40 pages which includes evidence of the completion of all 16 strands of the design cycle.
This cycle includes: selecting a target audience and developing an understanding of a specific need which allows for a design solution, inquiring into root causes for the problem(s) being faced by the target audience to better understand how to meet their needs, analyzing existing products, developing a design specification and concept models which visualize ideas for a solution to the problem identified, making a plan for creating the solution and demonstrating critical thinking skills and technical skills when selecting and using tools and materials, and finally testing and evaluating the created solution.
For this year’s design Eportfolio, students were asked to develop a design which takes globalization and sustainability into account and enhances communication, collaboration, and connection for their selected target audience.
Here are some examples of student works exhibited in the current exhibition:
Phillip Kastner – The redesign of a school space that allows for connection and collaboration.
Anna Oh – The design of a Q&A board that facilitates communication and connection.
Marceau Olivier – The design of an app for Francophones to communicate and connect.
Cindy Gong – The redesign of a school space that allows for connection and collaboration.
Pei Ying Cheong – The design of an app for IB students to connect, collaborate and communicate.
As a reflection exercise at the end of the unit, students produced an Eportfolio testimonial video meant to entertain and provide some tips for upcoming Y10 students. The exercise also provided current Y10s with the chance to express their feelings about the challenges they faced. Here is a short and humorous example from Anna Oh: ,
Y11 DP Design Technology
This school year, Y11 Design Technology (DT) students completed a project which allowed them to practice the thinking, research, and modelling skills they will need to apply in their DP Design Technology Internal Assessment (IA), by completing the first two stages of the DT design cycle (Criteria A and B). For this project students were required to:
- Describe an appropriate problem that leads to a design opportunity.
- Develop a detailed design brief that identifies the relevant parameters of the problem.
- Develop a design specification that justifies the requirements, based on the outcomes of research.
- Develop feasible ideas to meet appropriate specifications that explore solutions to the problem.
- Use concept modelling and analysis of the outcomes to guide design development.
- Justify an appropriate idea for detailed development.
Two students were selected to exhibit their work in the current exhibition:
Zhen Torreda – The design of a handrail system to assist and ensure the safety of the elderly as the go up and down the stairs.
Naomi Rojano – The design of a writing utensil grip to assist children learning to write.
