Today, Utahloy Guangzhou Campus welcomes a Dutch teacher who worked here for over a decade, leave after 10 years and return with her husband for a visit. Helmy Dirven, this educator from the Netherlands, has a story that is not just about departure and return, but a tale of educational philosophy, humanistic care, and belonging.

The Power of Education : A Journey Through Stories
Education is not just a series of lessons; it is a journey of the soul. Helmy’s story is a perfect example. When she first arrived in Guangzhou in 2004, it was the city’s vibrant culture and boundless opportunities for growth that drew her to Utahloy School. A chance encounter with the school’s founder, Dorothy, left her deeply impressed by the school’s international and innovative atmosphere. This encounter was the spark that led her to choose Utahloy School as her career home, where she worked as a kindergarten teacher for a decade. In 2014, she left for personal reasons, but a decade later, she returned to Utahloy School, her eyes still brimming with warmth for this “second home.”
Reflecting on her return, Helmy recalled the scenes of her early days at the school 21 years ago. She marveled at how Utahloy had transformed— from its modest beginnings to its modern-day facilities. While the school’s infrastructure has undergone significant changes, one constant remained: the heartfelt connection between teachers and students. During her visit, Helmy noted how teachers and students were still collaborating on activities with joy and mutual respect, the love that has never wavered over the years.

她回想到21年前她刚开始在Utahloy工作的场景，她欣喜地看到如今Utahloy学校经历了翻天覆地的变化–从最初的简陋设施到如今的现代化建筑，学校在硬件设施上有了巨大的提升。但在所有这些变化中，有一件事始终如一：老师对学生的爱。Helmy提到，她这次回来时，在校园里专门留意到老师们是如何和学生一起参与活动的，仍旧是充满喜悦和尊重，这种师生之间的情感连接从未改变。

교육계에서 모든 사람의 개인적인 이야기는 가장 소중한 보물과도 같다. 오늘 유탈로이 광저우 캠퍼스는 10년간 근무한 네덜란드 출신의 Helmy Dirven 선생님을 맞이하였다. 10년간의 공백에도 여전히 학교에 대한 애정을 가지고 있는 Helmy 선생님은 남편과 함께 친숙한 이 땅으로 돌아와 방문하기로 결정하였다. 네덜란드 출신의 교육자 Helmy 선생님과 유탈로이와의 이야기는 단순한 이별과 재회가 아니라 교육 이념과 인문학적 배려, 소속감의 각인이었다.

교육의 힘 : 이야기로 느끼는 교육의 매력
교육은 단순한 하나의 수업이 아니라 마음의 여정이기도 하다. 유탈로이에서 10년 이상 근무한 네덜란드 선생님 Helmy의 이야기가 그 대표적인 예이다. Helmy 선생님은 광저우를 처음 방문했을 때 광저우의 문화적 매력에 매료되었다고 회상하였다. 우연한 기회에 학교 설립자인 Dorothy를 만나 학교 소개를 듣고 국제적인 분위기와 혁신 정신이 가득한 학교라는 것을 깊이 느낀 Helmy 선생님은 유탈로이 스쿨에서 경력을 시작하기로 결심하고 10년간 유치원 외국인 교사로 일하다가 2014년 개인적인 사정으로 학교를 떠났다. 10년이 지난 지금, 그녀는 ‘제2의 고향’을 떠났을 때와 마찬가지로 따뜻한 눈빛으로 유탈로이로 돌아왔다.
Helmy 선생님은 21년 전 처음 유탈로이 스쿨에서 일하기 시작했을 때를 떠올리며, 초라했던 시작부터 지금의 현대식 건물에 이르기까지 학교의 하드웨어가 비약적으로 발전하는 등 유탈로이가 얼마나 많이 변했는지 보고 기뻐했다. 그러나 이 모든 변화 속에서도 한 가지 변하지 않은 것은 교사들의 학생들에 대한 사랑이다. Helmy는 학교를 다시 방문했을 때 교사들이 학생들과 함께 기쁨과 존경으로 가득 찬 활동을 하는 모습과 교사와 학생 간의 정서적 유대감이 변하지 않았다는 것을 특히 느꼈다고 말했다.

교육은 지식 전달만이 아니라 감정적 연결과 정신적 성장에 관한 것이기도 하다. “기계가 많은 것을 대체할 수 있고, 미래에는 로봇이 수업을 가르칠 수도 있을 것이다. 하지만 학생과 교사 사이의 감정적 연결은 기계로 대체할 수 없으며, 이러한 감정적 상호작용은 아이의 신체적, 정신적 건강에 필수적이다.”라고 Helmy 선생님이 말했다.
