ArtsMusic – Wednesday Atrium Concert 2
In the second week of the Arts & Design Exhibition, the Wednesday lunchtime concert featured the classical sounds of piano. Our two featured performers were from Year 7 and Year 8, filling the Atrium with strong performances of their chosen works.
Y8 – Think and Create like an Artist
As an immediate start of the semester, students were tasked and challenged to think and create like an artist. Inspired by the Eight Studio Habits of Mind (Develop Craft, Engage & Persist, Envision, Express, Observe, Reflect, Stretch & Explore, Understand Art World), students create an artwork based on the provided material, a starter object, and in a short, limited time. From this experience, students practiced on how to be more spontaneous and creative in responding to common circumstances that artists are often faced with.
Y7I – Appealing Composition and Illusions and Depth
The exhibition features artwork by Y7I students from two units. The first unit focused on creating illusions and depth in artwork. Students learned to use the techniques of perspective and shading to create a sense of three-dimensionality. The other unit focused on how to make compositions interesting by using design principles like balance, movement, contrast, and others. Learning these topics allows students to develop their artistic abilities and create visually appealing works. These units not only improved students’ technical skills but also encouraged their creativity and understanding of the fundamental concepts of art, building a solid foundation for future projects.
Design : Y8 Light Design
For their 3rd unit this school year, Y8 design students learned to use epoxy resin and pigments to create a light design. Students selected a client within the school community to create their light for and focused on how the design of the form of the light would impact its function (to illuminate the given space and create a pleasant mood).
Y7 Promotional Design
The year 7 students were tasked to help promote a carefully selected activity in the school community by developing designs that considered form and function. To promote interconnection between the community members and the wide range of different events, extracurricular activities, or groups, they inquired about a variety of promotional design solutions. At the end, they mostly chose poster as the main outcome. In their design process, they must consider the different possible elements to address the function of Attracting, Informing, and Instructing. Other for showcase purpose, more of the 50 posters displayed at the atrium this week were also used as testing method for students to evaluate the success of their solutions. Through a collaborative survey and interview, each student was tasked to survey which posters were grabbing the audience’s attention the most.
