During a recent educational excursion to the Guangzhou Laboratory, students had the unique opportunity to visit the Winston Chan Stem Culture Lab. The visit proved to be an enriching experience, offering hands-on exposure to cutting-edge techniques in molecular biology and cell culture.
Students learned the fundamental process of gene isolation, a crucial step in molecular biology research, allowing them to extract and study specific genes of interest.
Through practical sessions, students gained insight into DNA profiling using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), a technique essential for amplifying specific DNA sequences for analysis.
Students were introduced to the nanodrop technique for quantifying nucleic acids, providing them with the skills to accurately measure DNA and RNA concentrations.
The highlight of the visit was the opportunity for students to analyze colon and embryonic cancer cells using inverted microscopy. This hands-on experience allowed them to observe cellular structures and characteristics up close. The visit to the Winston Chan Stem Culture Lab not only broadened the students’ understanding of molecular biology and cell culture techniques but also inspired them to explore the fascinating world of stem cell research and cancer biology. By engaging in practical experiments and microscopy analysis, students gained valuable insights into real-world applications of scientific concepts.
Overall, the visit to the Stem Culture Lab under Guangzhou Laboratory was a memorable and educational experience, fostering a deeper appreciation for the advancements in biotechnology and cellular research.
We are grateful to the team of Winston Chan Laboratory in Guangzhou for hosting our students and enhancing their experience in the field of science.Dr Priyanka Pal Head of Year DP1 and Biology facilitator (Y10, DP1 and DP2)
