The first week in year 6 classrooms establishes the tone for the entire academic year. As educators in Primary Years Programme (PYP) classroom, We eagerly anticipated a vibrant start to captivate the young minds of my students from the very beginning. Reflecting on it now, We can confidently assert that the first week has not only exceeded our expectations but also laid a solid groundwork for continuous learning and growth throughout the year.
Throughout the first week, we actively participated in icebreaker activities, team-building exercises, and sharing circles, ensuring that everyone’s voice was heard and valued. These activities not only fostered a sense of belonging but also encouraged students to open up, creating a safe and inclusive classroom environment where they could freely express themselves.
In addition to building a positive classroom community, we emphasized the importance of setting clear expectations. Students collaborated and established essential agreements, setting the tone for collaboration and teamwork. We delved into discussions on the Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills, learner profile attributes, IB concepts, and responsibilities. We also introduced classroom routines and behavioral guidelines, ensuring that students understood and embraced these ground rules.
The students eagerly embraced these expectations and agreements, which became the foundation for creating a harmonious and positive classroom community.
Our morning meetings were filled with stimulating discussions and mindfulness practices that encouraged deep thinking and reflection.
The classroom walls were adorned with vibrant displays showcasing the impressive work of our students, along with inspirational quotes and visuals that aligned with the PYP curriculum. The carefully arranged classroom layout promoted collaboration, offering flexible seating options and designated areas for various learning activities.
In line with the core principles of the PYP, we prioritized promoting agency and ownership in our first week. Students were given opportunities to make choices and actively participate in shaping their educational journey. They had the freedom to select their preferred learning spaces and were involved in decision-making processes, fostering a sense of autonomy and genuine engagement.
As an educator, we are truly excited about the immense potential that each of our students possesses and eagerly anticipate witnessing their growth and development as they wholeheartedly embrace the transformative philosophy of the PYP.
