On Friday 22nd September the UISG community was asked to wear something white to represent peace. The day emphasised the need for everyone to play an active role in promoting peace, both within themselves and in their interactions with others. Through thought-provoking assemblies and activities, students were made aware of the various ways they can contribute to peace, such as resolving conflicts peacefully, using non-violent means to communicate, and showing kindness and empathy towards others.
During Early Years assembly, children started with calming breathing exercises to promote peacefulness and mindfulness. They then gathered around to listen attentively to the inspiring story of “The Peace Book” by Todd Parr, teaching them about the importance of peace in our lives. The children then displayed their crafted beautiful Peace doves using various sustainable materials, symbolizing their desire for unity. The assembly ended harmoniously as everyone joined together, singing a heartfelt Peace song, spreading the message of love and tranquility.
Year 1 talked about what peace means and different ways we can make this world a more peaceful place to live. We read the book “I am Peace” by Susan Verde and Peter H. Reynolds. For the assembly, the students had different choices. Each Year 1 classroom had an activity to choose from, and the students had the opportunity to mingle with other Year 1 children. They made peace bracelets and art related to the peace symbols.
Year 2 wrote Peace Acrostic poems, here are a selection to read:Peace helps usEverybody needs peaceAt earth if no peace the world will be a disasterCaring is peacefulEarth needs peace

Year 3 students learned about the importance of peace in a community begins with finding peace within yourself. We looked at different conflict resolution strategies to help solve real problems with their peers and family and had fun role playing with different scenario. We will continue this practice in our morning meetings.
Year 4 students did a “chalk and talk” activity, where they wrote and drew out their ideas of what peace means in our school community. They then joined one of three groups to show what peace means and how it can be achieved. Group 1 created a comic strip; group 2 made their own drama and group 3 researched examples of famous peacemakers from various countries around the world.
Year 5 and Year 6 students participated in Year Level assemblies to contemplate the meaning of peace and spend time as a community. A special mention to our newly appointed Utahloy Action Committee (UAC) who took the lead in preparing and presenting the Year 6 assembly.
