FAW–Volkswagen Plant
On Monday, September 23rd, DP Economics, Business and Design Technology students were invited to visit the FAW Volkswagen plant in Foshan. The purpose of this trip is to connect student learning in the classroom to real world contexts to grow understanding and build further interest in the subjects.
1. Design Technology Connections:
While at the FAW-Volkswagen Plant students were able to see firsthand manufacturing techniques, including the use of automated humanoid robots. Students were also able to learn about Volkswagen’s strategies for innovation and sustainability as they seek to thrive in a highly competitive market. An emphasis was placed on researching and understanding the needs of the local market to design and manufacture cars that stand out and suit the customer for years to come. Students were able to make meaningful connections to the content learned in their Design Tech lessons while touring the FAW-VW plant.
2. Economics Connections:
For economics students, the field trip provided invaluable insights into real-world applications of the economic concepts they study in class. A standout moment of the students’ visit to the Volkswagen factory was the chance to engage in informative Q&A sessions with senior Volkswagen executives. These leaders provided valuable insights into the factory’s operations and Volkswagen’s broader strategies. Students had the opportunity to ask questions, and the answers in this real-world context helped bring the economic theories learned in class to life. This hands-on and informative experience brought the economics concepts of scarcity, choice, and innovation to life, giving students a deeper understanding of how businesses operate.
3. Business Connections:
During the tour, students observed the advanced technologies and innovative production methods that allow Volkswagen to maintain high levels of efficiency and productivity. They saw how labour interacts with automation on the assembly line and how the company invests in cutting-edge machinery to enhance both the speed and quality of production. One of the key takeaways for students was to learn how Volkswagen focuses on sustainability in their operations. The factory integrates eco-friendly practices, such as energy-efficient production processes, and this was fully explained to students. This offered students a practical example of how large firms can operate sustainably in today’s market.
