March 1st, Under the crystal-blue skies of Guangzhou, Utahloy’s two campuses (UISG and UISZ) transformed into a global village. Over 100 families from more than 40 countries wove through sun-dappled lawns and sports fields—toddlers chasing bubbles, high schoolers coding robots at tech booths, and parents exchanging greetings in English, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Spanish. No grand slogans here, just the authentic hum of cross-cultural connection. As the IB philosophy reminds us: “Education is not the filling of a vessel, but the kindling of a flame.“

From AI Tech to Face Painting

At the UPTA-curated “micro-expo,” Korean mothers browsed charity bookstalls while Mexican families savored tacos nearby—a living mosaic of cultures. Nearby, students demonstrated AI-generated art, their screens glowing with digital brushstrokes. The face-painting booth became a TOK classroom in disguise: as colors bloomed on cheeks of every hue, IB’s Theory of Knowledge came alive, proving that “value systems emerge through intercultural dialogue.“

When rainbow powders exploded across the football field at 2 PM, IB’s mission to nurture “global citizens” took flight. Families sprinted together, their clothes becoming abstract art—a vibrant metaphor for CAS’s emphasis on cultural understanding. On the sidelines, football and golf tournaments embodied the DP’s “balanced development“: here, competition coexisted with camaraderie, and strategy with empathy, all mirrored in the more than 1,000 colored ping-pong balls exchanged between laughing participants.

The obstacle course’s triumphant shouts, volleyball matches in the MFH gym, and the clatter of ping-pong balls collecting in house jars—these weren’t just games. They were IB’s “holistic education” unfolding in real time. As children strategized to earn those more than 1,000 balls (each representing teamwork and risk-taking), they embodied the IB learner profile: “We understand the importance of balancing different aspects of our lives.“

The 3-kilometer Color Run left no winners—only parents hand in hand with children, teachers high-fiving students, all painted in shared hues. This was IB’s “international-mindedness” made tangible: education thriving through community bonds. When the Warriors house lifted their championship trophy, the cheers weren’t just for points scored, but for the spark of mutual recognition in every participant’s eyes.

As cameras captured the more than 300-person group photo, lingering laughter filled the air. 3월 1일, 광저우의 하늘은 빨래를 씻은 듯 파랗게 물들었다. 유탈로이의 두 캠퍼스(UISG와 UISZ)에는 잔디밭 사이를 달리는 유치원생, 부스 사이에서 로봇을 디버깅하는 고등학생, 영어, 중국어, 한국어, 일본어, 스페인어로 대화를 나누는 학부모 등 100명이 넘는 가족 그룹이 모여 녹지와 달리기 트랙 사이를 오가며 즐거운 시간을 보냈다. 40여 개국, 두 개의 캠퍼스에서 열린 이번 패밀리 데이에는 거창한 구호 대신 진정한 웃음과 충돌만이 있었다. “교육은 그릇을 채우는 것이 아니라 불꽃을 피우는 것입니다.”라는 IB Education의 말처럼 말이죠.

AI 테크부터 페이스 페인팅까지

한국 엄마들이 자선 책방에서 그림책을 고르는 사이, 멕시코 가족은 타코 트럭 앞에서 미소를 지었다. UPTA(학부모위원회)와 같이 기획한 이 ‘미니 엑스포’에서 중학생들은 AI 기술을 선보이며 문화 차이를 별빛으로 바꿨다. 다양한 피부색을 반영한 페이스 페인팅 부스의 크레파스는 서로 다른 국가와 지역 간의 대화와 충돌을 통해 가치 판단을 내린다는 IB의 지식 이론(TOK)의 의미를 증명해 보였다.

색깔로 피어나는 글로벌 비전

‘세계 시민 의식 함양’이라는 IB의 비전은 컬러 런의 형형색색 가루가 무지개로 튀는 순간 조용히 실현되었다. 다양한 색깔의 가족들이 이국적인 색으로 옷깃을 물들이며 나란히 달리는 모습은 CAS 활동에서 ‘문화 이해’의 전형이다. 녹색 필드에서는 축구와 골프 토너먼트에 전 세계 가족들이 모여들어 경쟁과 침착함, 전략과 관용, 교육 철학의 울림 등 DP 교육과정에서 강조하는 ‘균형 잡힌 발달’이 1,000개가 넘는 탁구공의 흐름 속에서 드러난다.

운동장에서 배우는 IB 핵심 역량

경기장 밖에서의 도전, MFH 체육관에서의 배구 대결, 장애물 코스(……)에서의 이를 악물고 전력 질주하는 모습은 단순한 게임이 아니라 IB가 주창하는 ‘전인 교육’의 생생한 버전이다. 아이들이 팀의 명예를 위해 색색의 탁구공을 모으는 동안(총 1000개 이상의 탁구공이 배포되었다!) 무의식중에 IB가 주창하는 ‘전인 교육’을 실천하고 있었다. IB 학습자 개발 목표인 “우리는 삶의 다양한 측면에서 균형을 잡는 방법을 알고 있다”는 말처럼 의사소통, 위험 감수, 성찰을 무의식적으로 연습하고 있었다.

공동체 속에서 자라는 교육

행사는 오후 2시에 컬러 폭풍으로 절정에 달했다. 학부모가 자녀를 안고, 교사와 학생이 나란히 달리며 3km의 여정은 웃음으로 가득했다. 승자와 패자가 없는 이 달리기 대회는 교육은 고립된 것이 아니라 다원적 공동체 속에서 서로를 비추는 것이라는 IB의 ‘세계 시민성’ 함양에 대한 은유와 닮아 있다. 워리어 팀이 우승 트로피를 거머쥐었을 때 모두가 환호했는데, 진정한 승리는 서로 다른 색깔을 가진 학생들의 눈동자에서 같은 별빛을 보는 것이기 때문이다.

교육의 시

카메라가 300명 이상의 단체 사진을 찍을 때 많은 가족들이 여전히 떠나기를 꺼려했다. 10가지가 넘는 활동과 IB 유전자의 향연은 유탈로이 교육의 모든 것, 즉 문화 간 실천 속에서 지식이 살아나고 커뮤니티와의 관계 속에서 성장이 일어나는 것을 잘 보여준다. PYP의 순수함부터 DP의 학문적 깊이까지, 유탈로이는 ‘성공’을 너무 일찍 정의하지 않고 탐구하는 용기, 공감하는 능력, 세상에 대한 예리한 감각을 심어줄 뿐이다.
