Dear UISG Families,
As we head into Spring Break and the observance of Ching Ming, I want to take a moment to wish you all a peaceful and rejuvenating time ahead. Whether you’re traveling, spending time with loved ones, or simply enjoying a well-deserved rest, may this break bring joy and renewal.
To those observing Ching Ming, I hope it’s a meaningful time of remembrance and connection with family traditions.
A HUGE THANK YOU to our wonderful parents, Board, and UPTA for the Teacher Appreciation Lunch yesterday in honor of our teaching staff!
As the Head of School, I was honored to join our UISG swimmers for the ACAMIS Junior Swim Championships last weekend in Shanghai. What a proud moment to help coach this group of Primary and Secondary swimmers – Go UISG Water Wolves!
We look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for an exciting final stretch of the school year. Stay safe, and enjoy the break.
Kindest regards,
Dr. Daniel Mullen

Some food for thought for the holiday…
Sleep
How much does your child sleep every night? If you answered 8 or less hours, did you know that this is actually the recommended amount of sleep for adults NOT children.
The recommended amount of sleep is:
- 12–17 hours for newborns and infants
- 11–14 hours for ages 1–2
- 10–13 hours for ages 3–5
- 9–12 hours for ages 6–13
Anything less than the above amount of hours is considered sleep deprivation.
Why sleep is important? Sleep plays a crucial role in the development of young minds. In addition to having a direct effect on happiness, research shows that sleep impacts alertness and attention, cognitive performance, mood, resiliency, vocabulary acquisition, and learning and memory. (from The Sleep Foundation)
What happens when your child does not get enough sleep? As every parent knows, a child that’s short on sleep can swing between being grumpy and hyperactive, with effects that can mimic ADHD. Sleepiness can also affect your child’s ability to pay attention, with ramifications for their performance in school. Even minimal sleep restriction can have effects on your child’s day-to-day life. (from The Sleep Foundation)
If you think your child should be getting more sleep, use the time over the holiday to change their sleeping habits. Here are some top tips for sleep:

Martin Grist | Head of Secondary
Dear Parents and Guardians,
This has been such a great week of different learning events in the Secondary school this week, for parents and students alike. Here are some of the highlights:
The Careers and College Fair – “Life After High School” – with industry experts, university representatives and careers booths – was such a success. Positive comments from the University reps as well as the industry experts highlighted the thoughtful commitment and engagement from our students. Read more about the event in the school’s WeChat post dedicated to it.

The Year 11 Theory of Knowledge (TOK) exhibition on Thursday was also an opportunity for our students to show their high level of thinking and meta-cognition. TOK is one of the core aspects of the Diploma Programme, and something which really sets out a key reason that schools choose the IB – the in-depth, high quality thinking and learning that goes into TOK classes is unique amongst curricula around the world.

Year 6 Global Citizenship Individuals and Societies presentation, and Year 9 Imperialism
Year 6 students showcased their work on their chosen Global Citizens, and explained ‘what makes a Global Citizen’. As well as being an excellent way for them to explain their learning, it also ties in directly with the school value of “Globally-Minded”

And Year 9’s engaged visitors in a gallery walk around their theme of Imperialism.

Last weekend our school orchestra joined with other young musicians from 8 other ACAMIS schools, culminating in an extravaganza of a concert on the final Sunday. The musicians learned from each other and made strong connections, all while creating some beautiful music.

Parent Sessions
Transition from Year 5 to Year 6 information session

We held an information session for Year 5 parents to give them an overview of how we as a school support the transition from Year 5 into Year 6. This was a great opportunity to demonstrate the connections that we have between Primary and Secondary, and how this really helps support our youngest MYP students.
We were also fortunate enough to have Shweta Chakrabarty back at school this week to present to our teachers about future changes in the MYP. Shweta was the former Assistant Head of Secondary and now is the Senior Curriculum Manager for the Middle Years Programme at the IB Global Centre in the Hague, Netherlands
Science afternoon for parents
Parents turned scientists in our latest monthly coffee sessions. A fantastic hands-on experience for all who attended.
