PYP OPEN MORNING

The recent Primary Years Programme (PYP) open morning brought parents into the heart of school life, offering a meaningful chance to learn alongside their children and to witness classroom learning firsthand. Parents were eager not simply to observe, but to participate, to ask questions, and to understand how inquiry, transdisciplinary learning, and student agency come together each day.
Each parent spent time in their child’s homeroom, experiencing the classroom routines, the learning environment, and the relationships that shape daily learning. In homerooms, teachers modelled inquiry-based approaches and demonstrated how student voice and choice is integrated and honored at UISG. The homeroom visits highlighted differentiation strategies, visible thinking routines, and collaborative group work—making clear how teachers balance structure with flexibility to meet varied learners’ needs.
In addition to homerooms, parents rotated through a specialist class, the library, or an outdoor learning session—each offering a window into complementary parts of the PYP experience. Specialist classes showcased how the arts, physical education, languages, or music enrich inquiry and deepen conceptual understanding. In a music lesson, for example, parents joined rhythmic activities and observed how musical concepts reinforce communication skills and creative expression. In physical education, parents experienced small cooperative tasks that promoted social skills, coordination, and healthy risk-taking.

The library visit underscored literacy as a living practice: UISG’s librarian and homeroom teachers demonstrated read-aloud strategies, book-browsing routines, and ways children select texts that match interest and reading level. Parents discovered how story choice, author studies, and inquiry projects in the library connect back to classroom units of inquiry. Outdoor sessions brought learning beyond four walls: parents participated in nature-based investigations, observed place-based learning practices, and saw how outdoor contexts encourage curiosity, resilience, and scientific observation.

Outdoor Sessions

A common theme across all settings was active engagement. Parents weren’t passive guests; they partnered in learning activities, asked reflective questions, and completed brief tasks that mirrored what their children do daily. This experiential approach helped parents appreciate pedagogical intentions—why teachers design provocations, how provocations trigger questions, and how student-driven inquiry unfolds over time.
PARENTS ENGAGEMENT

The open morning also included three Parent Power-Up Information Sessions covering topics on child safety, how parents can speak with their child, EAL practices and early years development. Parents were given suggestions for supporting inquiry at home—simple strategies for asking open-ended questions, creating routines for reflection, and nurturing a growth mindset.
By the end of the morning, many parents expressed renewed confidence and connection. Seeing their children lead learning, collaborating with peers, and taking intellectual risks reassured parents that the school’s approach supports holistic development. The event strengthened the home–school partnership: parents left with concrete ideas to extend learning at home, and teachers gained insight into parent perspectives that will inform future communication and collaboration.

Overall, the open morning was a vivid reminder that education is a community endeavour. When parents step into classrooms, libraries, and outdoor spaces, they not only see what students are learning—they join the learning itself. That shared experience deepens understanding, builds trust, and ultimately enriches the learning journey for students, families, and educators alike.
PYP OPEN MORNING
