PTA Appreciation Luncheon : A Heartfelt Celebration of Partnership

Today, the Art Institute of the Orient (AIO) hosted our UPTA&UPAZ Appreciation Luncheon, a special thank you to our parent volunteers for their tireless support throughout the 2025–2026 school year. We were honored to welcome Ms. Dorothy, Board Director and Chair of the UEF Board, who expressed her deep gratitude to the PTA.

A truly touching moment came when Ms. Cindy, our UPTA Co-Chair, shared a few words from the heart. A mother of three Utahloy graduates and a member of our community for 23 years, she thanked Ms. Dorothy for never giving up. “A great school lights up a child’s entire life,” she said, “and true education is not a report card, but a door to the wide world.” Her tribute was a powerful reminder of the partnership that makes our school what it is.

The luncheon ended with warm applause and full hearts—a beautiful close to an unforgettable school year.

Final Book Fair of the Year!
The last book fair of the school year was held on Wednesday, May 13th and Thursday, May 14th, as Obido returned to the UISG Library with books for all ages.

Whether your child was a budding reader or a seasoned bookworm, there was something for everyone—from picture books and early readers to middle grade favorites and young adult titles. Families stocked up on summer reading, found the perfect gift, or simply enjoyed browsing together while on campus for Student-Led Conferences.

Obido has been a valued partner of UISG for several years, and we were thrilled to welcome them back one last time before the school year ended. All primary students were given “book fair” envelopes to help keep track of their money.

It was a wonderful final opportunity to support your child’s love of reading and add some great titles to your home collection. Thank you to everyone who joined us!
Happy reading,
The UISG Library Team

Student-Led Conferences :Empowering Young Learners to Share Their Journey

Student-led conferences put young learners in the spotlight as guides and storytellers of their own education. From Kindergarten through Grade 4, students lead their parents through their learning journey, demonstrating growth across music, PE, art, mother tongue, and academics.

This approach transforms the traditional parent-teacher meeting by giving students a voice—they articulate what they’ve learned, reflect on challenges, and celebrate achievements. For parents, the experience offers authentic insight into their child’s day-to-day learning and fosters genuine partnership in education. Rather than passively receiving information, parents become engaged participants witnessing their child’s confidence, creativity, and growth across multiple domains. Parents leave inspired and connected, seeing their son or daughter as a capable, well-rounded learner.

Student-led conferences send a powerful message: Your voice matters. Your learning matters. You are capable.By celebrating the whole child and inviting authentic parent engagement, this approach creates a culture where education is a shared journey of discovery and growth.
G3 UOI in Action :Becoming Archaeologists Through the Inquiry Process

In our unit, Where We Are in Place and Time, our Grade 3 students didn’t just read or watch videos about archaeology—they became real archaeologists. They held tools in their hands, and their curiosity showed them the way. They dug, sifted, and brushed away sand. In doing so, they learned that this work was often slow and required a lot of patience. Some days, a careful sweep of the brush uncovered a bone with strange markings or a small piece of an ancient pot. Other days, after all that hard work, they found nothing at all. And that, they discovered, was the real lesson of archaeology: the patient, sometimes boring search was just as important as finding treasure. Through every empty hole and every small discovery, they learned to value the process, not just the reward.

Alumni Spotlight: Daehyun Ko
(Class of 2025) Returns to UISG
This Monday, our Grade 11 students received a special visit from Daehyun Ko, UISG Class of 2025, now studying Bioengineering at HKUST.
Daehyun Ko

Daehyun gave our students something no brochure can offer: an insider’s look at real university life. From dining hall food and dorm routines to lab facilities and daily schedules, he painted a vivid, honest picture of what awaits them.
He also shared practical tips for surviving and thriving in the DP, along with plenty of encouragement for the road ahead.

Our G11 students were fully engaged, asking thoughtful questions and walking away inspired. Thank you, Daehyun, for coming back and paying it forward to the next generation of Utahloy graduates.

Grade 9 Builds for Community : Chairs That Bring Comfort and Connection

For the past five years at UISG, grade 9 students have been designing and building fully functional chairs for the school community during their final unit of the school year. Focusing on ergonomics, students make their chairs to go into classrooms, offices, and communal spaces where comfort and connecting with others becomes the priority. Grade 9 students are nearly finished with this year’s batch of chairs, and to build excitement, students’ work from previous years has been set out in the atrium of the Secondary building where all students and staff can use them to sit and relax, read or chat with their friend during the lunch break.

UISG University Talk Series :Ewha Womans University Recap
This week, UISG hosted Ewha Womans University (이화여자대학교) , the best women’s university in Korea, for an in-person session on May 13.
The event was attended by all Grade 9-12 girls and approximately 20 parents, all highly engaged with thoughtful questions. A special milestone: UISG is the only international school in Korea and China that Ewha’s admissions team visited twice in two years in-person —a true testament to our strong partnership.

So what makes Ewha so remarkable?
First, its legacy.Founded in 1886, Ewha celebrates 140 years as Korea’s first women’s higher education institution.
Second, its impact.Ewha ranks among Korea’s top 8 universities and #1 in gender equality. It boasts the highest rate of female STEM professors and has produced more “first female” leaders than any other institution.
Third, its innovation. In 2023, Ewha launched Korea’s first AI College. Last year, it opened Medicine and Pharmacy to freshmen. Students enjoy flexible double majors, a “Challenge Semester” to design their own curriculum, and study abroad while paying Korean tuition. Ewha is also a Harvard Undergraduates in Asia partner.
Finally, its care.Dormitory housing guarantees accommodations all first-year students, relieving parents’ anxieties about securing housing for their daughters.

As Ewha’s president said: “We do not simply follow change. We lead change.” Thank you to our students, parents, and the Ewha team for a wonderful session.
