IN THE CLASSROOM
A balanced way to learn
Our classrooms are safe, welcoming places for students and teachers. Students experience a range of teaching styles, from teacher-led presentations to inquiry-based learning, interactive online platforms and the flipped classroom.
We believe a balance of traditional and progressive approaches is the best way to educate the whole person.

AFTER SCHOOL
Activities and athletics
Students can take part in three sessions of activities a year, each about ten weeks long. Athletics seasons run alongside the activity sessions, so students can try different activities and sports through the year.
Extracurricular Activities
More than 160 activities a year, at lunchtime and after school. They are led by staff and external providers and, in Secondary, by students themselves.

Field trips and camps
Field trips and camps are an essential part of our academic program. Field trips begin in Early Years and continue all the way to graduation, connecting what students learn in class to the world around them.
Camps have a life of their own. They give students new challenges and adventures, locally and across China. For many students, camp week is the highlight of the year.
- Rock climbing
- Kayaking
- Sailing
- Hiking
- Caving
- Camping

Field trips
Off-site visits that bring classroom learning to life, from Early Years to Grade 12.
First camp
Camp begins on campus, so our youngest campers can try it close to home.
Nights away
Camps grow from one night to two nights as students move through Primary.
Week Without Walls
A full week of adventure and discovery in destinations across China.
HOUSE SYSTEM
Four Houses, one school
Every student joins a House when they start at UISG, and siblings always share the same House. Houses compete in sports, quiz shows and other friendly challenges, building school spirit and a sense of belonging.

Fire Dragons

Water Pandas

Earth Tigers

Wood Warriors
House Captains
Grade 11 students can stand for election as House Captain of one of the four Houses.
House Representatives
Elected by their House peers, Reps help Captains build team spirit and encourage everyone to take part.
House Leaders
Each House has a Secondary House Leader who works with the Captains and Reps to plan events and lead assemblies.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP
Students with a real voice
At UISG, students are not passive members of the school. They are active leaders who help make decisions, build community and shape the daily life of the school.
The result is a school where community is not just a phrase in a mission statement but a way of life across the whole campus.

STUDENT COUNCILS
Student voice in every division
Utahloy Action Committee (UAC)
The Primary Student Council gives children a voice and helps them take responsibility for their learning community. It is led by the Utahloy Action Committee, formed by elected students in the final year of Primary.
- Identify areas to improve in our school
- Brainstorm solutions
- Put the solutions into action
- Reflect on and evaluate the impact
Each grade from Grade 1 to Grade 5 has four representatives, one from each House. Through them, every student can raise issues and share ideas, and bigger questions go on to the UAC.
Secondary Student Council
Elected directly by their peers and guided by a staff member, council members meet regularly with the Senior Leadership Team to raise issues that matter to students.
- Bring student issues to school leaders
- Organize social events
- Raise funds for local and overseas charities
- Plan special events like the Winter Ball
- Host school assemblies
- Share council news
