Performing Arts (Theatre & Music) at UISG

Arts are integral to the learning at Utahloy International School Guangzhou. We offer a wide range of opportunities to ensure that students are stimulated to think and articulate their ideas in new ways through various instruments and technologies. Learning about and through arts is fundamental to the development of the whole person, promoting creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and social interactions.

UISG has a creative community of young performing artists through the Early Years, Primary, and Secondary divisions. Along with curricular and extra-curricular performing arts opportunities on campus, UISG is a member of ACAMIS, which provides nationwide Arts-related opportunities. Also, as a founding member of the International Schools Music Association of Guangzhou (ISMAG), our young performers can participate in events in the wider Guangzhou community.

At UISG, arts are identified as both Performing Arts and Visual Arts. Arts education is incorporated into both the primary and the middle years programme. Arts promote attitudes such as empathy, expression, and appreciation. There is ample opportunity to enhance the observation skills that enable one to identify uniqueness and commonalities that connect us. Our arts programmes nurture a passion for various arts; they also teach aesthetic sensibility and creativity to students.

Performing Arts in Primary

Performing Arts in Primary School

Exploration in the Performing Arts begins with our youngest learners in Music as they experience the concepts (elements and features) of music through song, movement, and play. As students progress through Early Years and Primary, they develop responding and creating skills through singing, listening, and practical inquiry, being introduced to untuned and tuned percussion instruments, recorders, ukuleles, keyboards, the instruments of the Western Orchestra and traditional instruments, including those from our host country, China.

Performing Arts in Secondary

Performing Arts in Secondary School

Secondary students build on their Primary foundation and extend into two Performing Arts disciplines: Music and Theatre. In Music, students become researchers, creators, and performers as they gain listening analysis skills, explore composition, and develop their performance skills by exploring string, wind, percussion, and digital instruments. As all the world is a stage, Secondary students begin their journey in Theatre, exploring genres such as mime, melodrama, tableau vivant, Commedia dell’arte, Shakespeare, and World Theatre traditions.

Extra-Curricular Music

Extra Curricular Music

Extra-curricular Music Groups include our three choirs across Primary and Secondary (the Junior Choir, Intermediate Choir, and Senior Choir), Primary instrumental ensembles, such as the Strings Ensemble, Ukulele Club, and Shining Piper Fife Club, and Secondary groups, including the Jazz Band, Chamber Orchestra and Rock Bands. The UISG Orchestra offers our Primary Year 5 and Year 6 students the chance to join their Secondary peers in a large group ensemble.

Productions are a staple of our Performing Arts calendar, along with performances at the annual International Festival of Light (IFOL), Secondary DP and MYP Music and Theater course performances, lunchtime concerts and even Primary flash mobs!
