After a short break, The End of Year Arts & Design Exhibition (MYP-DP) continued last week (Mon-Fri, May 29-June 2, 2023) in the secondary atrium with the works of Year 11 DP Visual Arts students.
Task 0. Me, The Artist.
This project was the students’ first challenge in Semester 1 where they had to create a series of self-portrait pieces with a variety of techniques. Their self-portrait works should be a reflection and response to their development as a young artist. The works could be varied from representative to abstraction, exploring their past, present, future, social, physical and emotional state.
Media Workshop 1. Negative Drawing.
In this experiment session, also in Semester 1, student learned about the various techniques related to utilizing negative space as the emphasis of the drawings. This is a good practice for their observational skills, particularly their sense of light and dark.
Media Workshop 2. Reductive Linocut Print
The application of the previous negative drawing skill is in this printmaking workshop. The reductive linocut print is a method of block printing in which each colour layer is taken from the same block. More lino is removed from the block for each layer and each colour is printed on top of the last.
Mini-Exhibition
For one of their summative tasks in Year 11, each HL student was expected to exhibit 3-4 of their best studio works this year (and 2-3 works for SL student). This mini exhibition is a very good experience to build their confidence in art making and also their communication of their personal and cultural artistic experience. In this mock exhibition, students were also exercising their curatorial practice, which included planning the artwork arrangements and writing its rationale and each work’s exhibition text. Hopefully this opportunity can help them prepare for their final assessment in Year 12 next year.
